The Road: The Movie

Here's a preview of the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's book by the director of The Proposition.  Looks promising.

No matter how good this is, it'll still be thought of as worse than No Country for Old Men (even though I've heard the Road is a better book -- I still need to read both!)

The Road was a far superior book to No Country for Old Men. The latter read like a novelization, or a Michael Crichton book that was clearly written for film treatment.

I do not have high hopes for The Road as a movie. Nothing in the casting or images I've seen leads me to believe that it will be bad per se.  But nothing in the history of great books turned into movies leads me to believe it will be good either.  It will likely be sufficient, and then disappear.

One more thing. Part of the beauty of the book The Road was the writing style, which fit perfectly with the bleak landscape. Sparse. Cold. Devoid of any frills. 

The movie may gain a dimension through quality visuals, but it will lose something just as important.

Agreed. Another thing is that a lot of "the meat" in the book is the father's inner monologue and ruminating on their chances of survival, which I don't see translating into film.  They'll probably have to play up the scenes where the father and son encounter other people.  Could still be a good movie but has to be very different than the book.

I agree, the movie will lack the qualities that made the book special, but what movie doesn't? Maybe it's a little soon to be adapting it as a book. C'MON HOLLYWOOD? WHAT'S THE RUSH?!?!?! What is the world going to end?

Oh, that's the point of the book? Better push it along in so you can depress us along the way to the end.

That book made me wear grey for a couple months. There weren't enough puppies and kitties in the world to get me out of that funk.
