For the second wave, let's say post '95, of Dischord bands, I'll say The Make-Up.
The early tours they did were incredible.

Best live shows I've ever seen.  Admittedly, I haven't seen a lot, and I'm an art dude.

The Make-Up DVD (In Film/On Video) comes highly recommended from me.

To be honest, I can't think of an outright bad Dischord band. There's some skippers for me but on the whole they have fostered a valid, intelligent community project. Be proud DC. Be proud America.

Shudder to Think, then and now ...

Weird long-haired kids in 1989:

Exhibit B is a semi-reunion thing from February of this year, at an event called "Barack Rock" which was a benefit for ... Kucinich? I think it was for Kucinich. Or maybe Ron Paul.

Political stuff aside, this is a beautiful performance of "Lies About the Sky":

Here's a quote from a review of that show:"Wedren took the stage with original bandmates Nathan Larson and Kevin March, shyly announcing the reunion-of-sorts, sensing (and later commenting overtly) on the crowd’s apparent cluelessness as to who they were."??? :-\ :'( ... FOR SHAME, young Manhattanites!

(Sidenote: the Barack show also featured Michael, David, and Michael from Stella. Here they are exploring the limits of what's comedically acceptable at events of this type):

Nation of Ulysses!

On a side note related to the topic, I love it when Tom mentions the Faith/Void split to DC callers as a way to find common ground with them, usually in the form of "DC?  Dischord house?  Faith/Void?"  Cracks me up every time.

Didn't Nathan Larson join for Get Your Goat or Pony Express Record?  I guess that counts as "original" member but not "founding".

Anyway, for some reason I got it in my head that Craig Wedren was chubby and had dredlocks in the "Jade Dust Eyes" era, but I'm completely wrong.

Yeah, Nathan Larson came along later, but some Shudder fans are more partisan to the Larson Era ... so there's a lot of room for argument about what constitutes a proper "reunion". I'm stayin' out of it.

The chubby, dreadlocked member of shudder was their original guitarist, whose name was Chris Matthews. Matthews got rid of the dreadlocks when he started hosting "Hardball", but he didn't lose any of the weight.  ;)

I only got to see them live in the Larson/Wade era at Maxwell's and it was fucking awesome.  Thanks for the illumination about Chris Matthews!

I'm still amazed that Wedren is straight and married.  My whole basis for "understanding" Pony Express was that it was math-rock-as-codified-homo-erotica.  I guess the post-band marriage doesn't necessarily discount that as a possibility.

Wedren is straight and married?  That's sort of surprising.  Shudder To Think did music for 'Velvet Goldmine', which is one of the gayest movies of all time (as a Bowie/Pop fan, I really like that movie.  It is my favorite gay movie!).

I saw them in the pre-Larson days, btw 10 Spot and Funeral at the Movies.  Word was Matthews left to be a math teacher, good for him.

1)Medications
2)Make-Up
3)Fugazi
4)Smart Went Crazy
5)Shudder to Think
6)Nation of Ulysses
7)Jawbox
8)Aquarium
9)Faraquet
10)Snakes

Devin Ocampo is/was in three of those bands, and also plays with Mary Timony.  They don't get much more talented than that guy.

Fugazi holds a special place in my heart, because they stayed at my house when they played in Burlington, VT in 1991. They were very nice. We head-banged to L7 "Shove" in their U-Haul, watched "120 Minutes" on MTV, and ate Muesli.  For Fugazi, that's a fucking bacchanal.

Not to mention that their music was pivotal for me.  When I am on my deathbed, I want to give my confession to Ian.  I am serious.

Other than Fugazi, I was also kinda into the Holy Rollers. And Jawbox.

He's high up there on my list of drummers, too.

Medications have reformed with a new member and a ton of new songs.  The next album should be amazing.
