I also think she'll get scapegoated as the reason for the loss.

Already happening.  She's more popular with the party than McCain but less popular with the electorate, which really underlies serious problems within the Republican party.  Seriously, these people first need to learn how to be human again.

Yeah, Grote is right (again). Same-sex marriages already performed are unlikely to be invalidated by this law. That's why there has been a rash of gay marriages in Cali in the last few weeks. There was an article about this in the Times today actually.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/04/us/04marriage.html

So don't worry about me, I'm one of the lucky ones (assuming you think a marriage of any kind is actually a blessing). I'm just steamed that the supposedly most-progressive state in the country appears poised to kill this gay marriage thing. Which suggests that hope lies in the courts (although the Massachusetts state assembly deserves a little bit of credit).

If you're gay, you can get married in Connecticut now also. And Jersey gets props for allowing civil unions, along with Vermont and NH. And you can get married or enter into a civil union in Canada and most western European countries, although few U.S. states recognize same-sex marriages performed abroad.

If all this makes people you know uncomfortable, you can tell them that it doesn't affect them materially one iota.

No matter the outcome, the right cannot possibly make me any more afraid than they have made me in the recent past. The day after Bush secured it for the second time was the worst day in America I've lived through short of 9/11, bar none.

Of course I'd be crushed if we didn't pull it out this time, just not even so much because the GOP won, as for the potential evolution we'd lost. Thankfully, this will not come to pass. Conservatives would have to summon Satan himself (not that they aren't trying) to give McCain even a CHANCE at winning this thing now, Bradley effect be damned.

I second Joe - I've been wearing black for 8 years now, I'm ready for a change

but it's nothing compared to the day i worked a 16 hours only to be carjacked/kidnapped by a huge drunk guy outside a liquer store not 10 minutes after leaving work who then forced me to drive him around LA while he did some drugs deals. every time we parked he took my keys so i coudln't escape. also he repeated tried to solicit oral sex from me, which i respectfully declined.

What? Why the hell would you stay in the car if he was out of it? Did he also put a backwards B on your face because of your bumper stickers?

people keep asking me that. it's a decent question.

honestly, i didn't want to come back to find my tires slashed and windshield smashed out or worse. it's kind of like The Bicycle Thief, my car is my crucial to my livelihood, i would rather ride it out on the assumption i'd get out of it unscathed than sacrifice something i need to survive. plus i live in LA, do you expect me to walk home?

and yes Fido, it's a real story and it was fucking scary.

I voted today. It was a provisional ballot because I am a fuck up. But hopefully it winds up counting.

To make up for it, I honked for Obama at an intersection.

Wow, Colin, that is fucking scary. When I first read your post, I thought your story might have been just a story, because we all love to make up stories around here. And then I reread it and thought differently. I'm glad you made it out of that experience okay and are still my fellow Friend of Tom.  :)

Total Best Show bump in play.

Tonight I went to a party hosted by The Onion and got to see Morgan Murphy, Aziz Ansare and the one and only Patton Oswalt do stand up for a post-election crowd.  It was glorious.  Patton O is a master crafstman.  I gotta say I was impressed by Ansari as well (btw, fuck if I know how to spell his name).  After the show I thanked P.O. and M.M. but I didn't have the cajones, or the time, to involve the Best Show in any explanations of my admiration.  For real, though, I really wanted just to thank them for making it a memorable occasion and for ushering the new era in with class.  They were cool about it.  Seriously, people, Patton Oswalt is a cut above all the rest. It's incredible.

Also, wtf how cool is it that we have the first black president?
