I'm reasonably optimistic that Obama's gonna have this thing wrapped up by about 8:30 p.m. central time. If A.P. Mike is announced as the mayor-elect of Newbridge by 10 p.m. central -- and I'm much, much more cautious about my hope in this arena -- I will be drunker than I have ever been by 11:37 p.m.

I'm trying not to pin absurdly high expectations on Obama, but good lord it's going to be nice to not be completely embarrassed by this country's leadership for a change.

(Unfortunately, my beloved but misguided Texas is set to remain solidly red 'n' stupid this year and for the foreseeable future, despite our best efforts here in Austin.)

Austin is the exception to the "Don't Mess With Texas" rule...majority of the time.

I'm with you on both counts.  This will be a great day if Obama and A.P. Mike win.

this morning on the way to work i saw a bride and groom standing on the corner holding up signs supporting PROP 102 (in short, no gay marriage) and it looks like someone had the day off with nothing better to do.

they looked ridiculous...but no pictures, sorry.

the best thing to do when you see something like that is go right up to them and kneel down while making the sign of the cross. make no eye contact whatsoever the entire time. when they finally ask what it is you're doing, tell them you're praying (real hard) that the good lord blesses them with a gay child. actually, i would never wish creeps like that on a gay child. they're likely the kind of folks to kick a kid out of the house at 17 for "choosing" that lifestyle. honestly, are people really still this outraged over the whole gay marriage thing? still? c'mon... not supporting it is one thing. going out of your way to influence the way other people live their lives is another. and by that i mean it's stupid.

I gotta say, I will be extremely bummed out if it doesn't go the way I want it, but there's a few things that I will hold onto:

I maintain that I basically lost faith in the people of the U.S.A. in 2004, so if Obama wins, this will restore my faith, but if he loses, it'll just be more of the same. I've gotten used to expecting nothing, but four years ago I was pretty surprised when everyone sold their core values up the river.

Also, I still feel that this election was all about Obama, and that the Republicans are a mess either way.  McCain would probably be a "good guy" but a shitty president, as opposed to an evil guy and an evil president.  If he dies and Sarah Palin takes over, well, yeah, we're fucked, but it's important to remember that if McCain/Palin loses, Palin's gonna be around for awhile anyway.  We're stuck with her, and there's a small army of Sarah Palins behind her.  We're stuck with all these ignorant goons no matter who wins, so we deal with them now, or we stave them off for a bit and then deal with them again in four years.

This sounds so pessimistic but it's weirdly the stuff I'm trying to comfort my nerves with!  I still have hope, and that kinda scares me.

Yeah, people are that outraged about gay marriage. The ballot proposition in California banning gay marriage just might pass, and I think the prospects for the same in Florida and Arizona are probably pretty good.

I thought we were moving beyond this, when polls initially showed that California voters were likely to reject this measure. However, polls typically undercount support for anti-gay marriage measures, meaning that if 49% of California voters polled say they support it, as was the case in a recent poll, the real amount of support on election day is likely to be well upwards of 50%. A true "Bradley effect."

It really saddens me to see this happen. I married my partner in California this August, which was one of the best days of my life. It meant so much to be able to do this finally. Sadly, that right may be taken away, just months after it became a reality.  Thanks for reading -- I acknowledge that this post really, truly belongs in the humorless politics thread.

chin up, Fido.  i'm of the mind that if i want something bad enough, i do what i need to do.  it's not always the right/easy choice, but if what you truly want is not in CA, head for greener pastures.

of course, that's the (very) short answer that holds no regard for most people's reality.

Gay marriage is one of the few issues that I think actually warrants considering moving to Canada. We got gay marriage, we had a cynical re-consideration of it (kind of like California is having today) and we kept it!

Jersey's got gay marriage, Fido!  We can add that to the Jersey wins list, though I hope Prop. 8 goes down in flames.  It might have even had the unexpected effect of driving up Democratic turnout.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Yup.  Except only recently have I seen hope's fragile rebirth in me.  To feel it again after so many, many years only to have it die?  A prospect too awful to contemplate--so I'm contemplating it as much as I can, just in case.

Actually most legal experts are saying that the existing gay marriages won't be invalidated, though it will surely be tied up in court for months, if not years.  I'm a big fan of civil unions for everyone, and people can handle marriage in whatever personal or religious way they want.  My wife and I had an awesome godless ceremony where we read Rilke and Octavio Paz, though I think I made a remark about Jewish tradition just to rattle my new father-in-law.

I'm not so sure she'll amount to anything if they lose. I know, she seems really popular right now, but think of the losing ticket's running mate from the past 30 or so years of presidential elections and think about where their political careers are now. Edwards? Lieberman? Kemp? Quayle? Ferraro? Mondale? (I omitted the dead guy in the interest of tact) All more or less done. I know Palin's a new type of animal, but I don't think she'll go very far if they lose. I also think she'll get scapegoated as the reason for the loss.

Want to know what scares me the most of about the possibility of a McCain victory? Three words - "Attorney General Giuliani."
I'll probably go into the wee hours.
