Is anyone else as perplexed and downright astonished by Animal Planet's Whale Wars as I am?

Oh boy. Stink bombs thrown at Japanese whale "research" boats! Hippies flying damaged helicopters above half-frozen seas! Said hippies boarding said japanese whale "research" boats and being taken hostage!

And I thought Kyle XY was a rush...

Has George Lucas taken legal action over their choice of font?

Sea Shepard is awesome. I for one can't fucking wait until i get a chance to watch this.

I think it's a really gutsy and cool move for animal planet to put on a show like this in the middle of all this "eco terror" insanity.

I hate fake hippies as much as the next guy, but this is truly one of the truly worthwhile "radical" causes out there, so I'm behind this show. Our oceans and their denizens are rapidly becoming screwed and we must act to police ourselves as a species, even if we fail at being good stewards of this planet.

Equally tragic as whaling to me personally is the Japanese dolphin harvesting that goes on. Since I can't figure out how to make youtube just a link here without embedding the video itself, here's it is, but PLEASE be warned before you press play that most of the images are very graphic and emotionally charged. It's definitely not for the faint of heart, but very important nonetheless.

As slow as this work has been compared to the campaigns against whaling, there are still good people out there doing good work. I hope this isn't too heavy for this forum, but it just breaks my heart me to know this shit goes on in the world, still, and saw an opportunity to say so.

I'm right with you on that one, Reg Joe. Question for you -- can you point me to some sites explaining why the major governments of the free world aren't stepping up to this one? I heard something about the Japanese operating "within the law," and I'm just curious as to what law or laws that is in reference to.

Thanks!

I believe that the Japanese are officially killing whales for research purposes (as suggested by your use of quotes above.) But in reality, it's because they traditionally eat 'em, and intend to continue to do so (even though younger Japanese have zero interest in eating whale.)

And RegJoe's right. The oceans are fucked - we've just about destroyed the stocks of everything edible, and show no signs of relenting.

I was excited about this show when I thought it was about some form of whale combat. Now, not so much.
I'm warning you with peace and love.

I did some quick searching right now, but couldn't find anything that fully answered why. I think the reason is that there is no good reason why, but that's a guess. There is a lot of information other than that out there though, one of those sites i posted bluevoice.org is a good place to start.

I read an interview with him and he said he loves Jay-Z, but the only album he listens to is the Collision Course collaboration with Linkin Park.  So weird.

About three decades ago, moi saw an ad, in The Oregonian, for a gig with Green Peace.
I use to believe Earth DNA could, potentially, create a civilization;
BOY, WAS I WRONG!

The job description: To go stand on railroad tracks as the train with some nuclear crap approaches, get arrested, get thrown in jail.
Perks: Minimum wage, free duct tape bandage, several choice pieces of (extremely) ABC(ed) Gum, get to hear the GP leaders sing "Turn, Turn, Turn" from back of paddy-wagon.

Stay on groovin' safari,
