Spike: Permanent Heave-Ho?
« on: February 26, 2009, 09:10:27 AM »
I hate to be an enemy of free speech (such as those people in NYC's invisible boro), but does it seem like Spike has run his course? His refusal to change his game with movie reviews just seems insulting to us, the listeners, and to Tom, the admiral. Does his refusal to take orders earn him a dishonorable discharge? Does the fact that he's been essentially making the same call for three years seem excessive? Or should he be spared the plank for fear of losing gems like "what am I, your bartender?" and "paying for cable? creeping people out?"

It does seem like he's been offered many, many opportunities to improve his game. I'm casting a reluctant "yes". Maybe he needs a time out.

Absolutely not. Spike's refusal to change and his hilarious idea of "preserving the mystique" are part of the charm. Not every call is a home run, but everyone has their down periods, especially when you've logged as many calls as he has. He has been on the receiving end of some of Tom's funniest stuff. I say let him keep calling, though I wouldn't object to his taking a week off every now and then.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

He should call in on topic some of the time. It's just too much of the same stuff every week.

Yes. Best Show's not a democracy.

Plus Spike did try to change up his game with that bit about Staten Island and un-American people, which was clearly rehearsed. It's fun watching him try.

Not rehearsed enough ... it fell apart as soon as Tom asked him what the hell he was talking about. Come on, Spike. Try harder.

If hearing from Spike every week leads to the occasional "hooker pratfall" gem, I'm all for it.

I agree, BUT if this poll is simply about the opinions of the FOT and only that, I must cast my "strong yes" vote for a permanent heave-ho.
