Charles Grodin on WCBS-AM 880
« on: March 27, 2009, 10:39:14 PM »
Heard a segment on air today from Charles Grodin while I was waiting to hear "trafficandweathertogether" or something like that. His segment, probably no more than 60 seconds long, was a little commentary about cell phones. His story was about this friend of his who always answers his cell phone no matter what. He could be in the middle of rescuing people from a downed jet in the Hudson River, and Mr. Grodin's friend would answer his phone promptly. His query: Don't we have caller ID on most or all cell phones to obviate the need for this? That was it.

Now, I've got nothing against the guy, or didn't until this week's Best Show. But I gotta say, that piece didn't add much to my day. Might have even taken the level down a few notches. Paul Harvey could have done better. Whatever CBS is paying this guy, it might worthwhile to weigh the value-added against the cash outlay.

Grodin's usually pretty funny. But he's no Paul Harvey. In fact, there probably won't be another Paul Harvey.

Fair enough. I'm not gonna nominate him for the hate pit. Too many other clowns who belong there.

I've heard Grodin's commentaries from time to time and they're hit or miss. But he does do great interviews.

His CNBC show (was it CNBC?) was pretty poor. He came across as half-crazy.  I like him as a comic actor though.  Real Life. Midnight Run. Clifford. All great stuff.

Yeah, I remember the CNBC show. That was back when they had both Charles Grodin and Tom Snyder.

I just finished listening to this week's show, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers his CNBC show.  Didn't he also fill in for Charlie Rose from time to time?

There are probably only a handful of people that remember that CNBC show. As Jon pointed out, it wasn't very good. But I give him credit for trying. It isn't easy to do a nightly talk show.

I remember Dana Carvey's parody of Grodin's show more than I remember the actual show.

I love when Grodin's on Letterman and they basically have a grouch-off to see who can get more annoyed.

I rented Real Life re: last week's show.  Pretty good.  Dunno if it beats Beethoven's 2nd, though.
