Patton on Conan

This is extremely late, but Patton is going to be on Conan O'Brien tonight.

The last time I saw him on Conan, which was like 2004, he basically just did his entire comedy routine in conversation. I love Patton, but I always get upset when my favorite comedians do that on talk shows.

I see your point, but at the same time talk show banter is always essentially prepared material anyways. And if a guy is going to go on national television in front of millions of people (a good portion of which, in Patton's case, are likely not familiar with his material) you might as well do some stuff you know gets a good reaction.

Man, I'm really becoming the defender of celebrities today. I'll dish some dirt later just to even things out.

Hey Pidgeon, if you want to hear Patton in a more spontaneous mode, he makes frequent appearances on a show called THE BEST SHOW ON WFMU WITH TOM SCHARPLING.

(Also, he's known to occasionally visit podtrash of various stripes).

Yea I know what you mean. I saw him in a club once, then two weeks later saw him again... and he told most of the same jokes. Ever since that Big Fan money came pouring in, he's just gotten lazy. FUCK YOU, PATTON!

Dear Pidgeon,

Sincerely, do you want to be a jerk, or are you just incapable of stopping?

Aw c'mon, give him a break!  He's just a teen or in his very early twenties!  (I'm assuming---?)

I think almost all comedians use pre-written material on talk shows, and most or all of the celebrities have most or all of their conversation plotted out beforehand.  Or if they don't it might come off an incoherent piece of crap like Ryan Seaquest's stabs at mocking Simon Cowl before Patton came on.  In his defense I saw Patton do a 90% improvised election night set this year that absolutely killed, but that was a pretty small event.  I think for comedians, being on The Tonight Show is like doing a presentation at an Executive Board Meeting with a couple million people watching you.  You want to get invited back and you want to have your best, most time-tested material that appeals to the broadest possible audience.  You save the off-the-cuff stuff for bars and the UCB Jr. or whatever.

Honest Q: Was that "applauding my balls" thing new?

Friday night was my first chance to catch the new Tonight Show with Conan - and I liked it. Would it be correct to assume that Andy is back in an Ed McMahon-type role, only not hanging out on the couch next to Conan? Or was this just a special return for the initial week of the new show?

(If anything happened after Patton left, I missed it. I opted for bed rather than experience the Chickenfoot.)

I always find it interesting as to when, in a comedian's career, they get to just chill on the couch. I'd like to do (or better yet, see) a graph of careers that would show when the comic started, first time performing on the tonight show, 2nd time, 3rd time, 1st time on couch etc. Who makes these decisions?

Because you're suggesting that we're all just Patton Oswalt fanboys and not actually making reasonable arguments. That could be construed as kind of insulting.

No no no! That's not what I meant at all!

I was joking around that sometimes I visit this forum forgetting that it's FOT-related. It was a self-deprecating comment to make me look like a dunce.

considering that Feelin' Kinda Patton came out only 5 years ago, patton has moved leaps and bounds in such a short period of time.  in fact, most of the "alternative" comedians have.

but ill save that for another discussion, away from the board.
