He's offering something for free, out of the goodness of his heart. Why make him feel small about it?

with all due respect, pigasus, we fought the punk wars so we wouldn't have to listen to this Joana newsom hippie shit.

Thanks for the respect! You didn't fight any war, and if you did, you lost. Tom has unfairly judged Joanna Newsom by, oh I don't know, not giving something a chance that's a little longer formed and takes a while to get into. Sort of, I guess, maybe, kinda, well, um, kinda like THE BEST SHOW ON WFMU? What a great and cogent point. I'm glad I thought of it.

I think it is apples and oranges. She has nothing to do with rock music.

I like her a lot and think she'll be wonderful live next month.

Tom's point was funny though.. the "punk wars", hahaha.

oops! sorry, pigasus.  In light of Tom's hilarious comments about Joanna Newsom on the Jan. 30th show, when I read your initial post, I thought you were makin' with the irony.  Reading your congenial response to Laurie's curt dismissal of your offer, I was sure you were.

It's not the "long formed" quality of Joanna Newsom's work that annoys me, it's her quirky, impish style...she's Bjork with a harp.  I have no problem with the length of her pieces.  In fact, if you're talking about sheer duration, I can assure you, I have the attention span (and the time) to deal with music by some of the biggest bags of longwinded hot air you've ever heard of, including LaMonte Young, Phil Niblock, Charlemagne Palestine.., etc.

Btw, TBSOWFMU took me no time at all to get into.  Tom had me at "Hey, Hey, Everybody."

The new album is much less tolerable than her prior work which was more tune-like.

I find her voice incredibly annoying, almost as annoying ass all the overblown adulation from the Wire and Mojo reading chin-strokers.

Ys is far more tolerable than The Milk-Eyed Mender, i.e., the vocals are much less annoying.

Also: Steve Albini called Newsom a "bad-ass".  He claims he once saw her beat up David Yow.

I talked to a friend of a friend of etc.etc.... who told a story about David Yow, who this person worked with; take it with a grain of salt as so many stories like this get better with age.....

Apparently he would regularly drop trou at work. Some guy they worked with (a graphic design firm if memory serves) was a complete jerk. And one day had managed to piss DY off, as soon as the guy left for lunch DY dropped his pants and proceeded to take every item on the guys desk and rub his gentials with it and replace it where it was.

I just saw the Scratch Acid reunion and that guy is a total animal on stage, jeepers.
