Is the Best Show no longer "kid friendly"?
« on: August 27, 2009, 12:14:12 AM »
I've been digging more and more into the archives and I'm shocked at how many little kids were calling in. It's great, some of them are hilarious. Yet in the half year or so that I've been listening live I don't think I've heard any kids call in at all. What's up with that?

Need I remind you of Caleb?

Seriously though, I've noticed this myself. I guess kids have found better things to do on Tuesday nights.

That, or Spike has scared them off.

One of my favorite things about Tom is his reaction to kids and his patience with them.  While I do not know Tom I believe that his kindness towards kids (and dogs) is a clear indication that he is a top notch guy.  If I had a kid I'd let them call.  Since I don't have a kid I let my dog send him messages on Twitter.

I remember it was young August (?) that first got him hip to twitter.

Mike and his adult themes have skewed the demographic significantly.

I loved August! What a kid he was.

I think I remember hearing one show where he called in and he was definitely older - maybe 14? I jump around too much and I don't remember when this was. I wonder what he's up to now.
Remember how he couldn't stop his leg?

I think he volunteered at the marathon last year or the year before. I seem to remember Tom saying his name when naming the volunteers during one of the marathon shows.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I think this is the most logical explanation. I'm 25 and I find that The Mike Show is too lewd even for someone my age.

More discussion about cartoons and less discussion about "fun packs." Think about the kids, Mike.

I think a lot of young kids used to try to "prank" the Best Show and ended up being converted to regular callers.

My kid called in a couple months ago.  Ted Leo was in the studio.  First call of the night.  His phone etiquette was pretty lacking though.

Actually I'm glad you did. I never did get around to listening to the whole of the 6 hour show so I missed that. Shame on me.

I though August was terrific. Especially because, at the time, he seemed to exist as a counter-point to Petey. I seem to remember August calling in after a long time had passed and being shocked by his post-pubescent voice.
