R.I.P. Geocities

NPR had a story today about the death of the estimable GeoCities:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=114156767
Quote
Young people today may not know much about GeoCities but back then it was a big deal.

Mr. JOHN ABELL (Wired Magazine): You know, 15 years ago, having your own Web page was the equivalent of being the coolest person in town.

Hmm ... that's not exactly how I remember it. But then again I don't work for WIRED.

Nevertheless, I am DESPONDENT. In a last-ditch effort to reverse this tragedy, I have established a "Save GeoCities" website. It can be found here:

http://www.geocities.com/saveGeoCities/gottaSaveit4Realz/~/Gilda/sLash/theGuitaristSlash/dotedu/sharkweek.htm

If the link doesn't work, please try it again later!! It will work if you have faith ... faith will see us through.

slash/theguitaristslash is almost worthy of the original - high praise!
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

... the above post is a snapshot of this treasure trove.

... and fear not, Ninjas, for all is not lost. Some of these pages can still be viewed via the Juggalo Wayback Machine. The nascent days of a burgeoning movement, preserved in digital amber.

For example:

I've said it before here (or perhaps on a previous incarnation hereof) but still, this recurring bit is an all-time favorite of mine.

Not sure why this rings similarly to me, but sometimes when I've thought about calling the show, I've imagined pretending I was from Staten Island simply so Tom might inquire (perhaps with accent) about Sedutto's, Hylan Blvd and Jim Hanley's.  Like the endless geocities web address, mention of the iconic Staten Island elements is always hilarious to me...

There was a particularly long one in another early call - it had "the word word" and "the word the" in it.

Yeah, the one with Augie Richards from Ye Olde Burger Barn. Our own Mel was kind enough to share this particular clip on twitter yesterday: http://bit.ly/dotslash (mp3)

Those URLs always remind me of this McSweeney's list.
Congratulations. You are now a mouse cursor inside a graphics program that the client can control by speaking, emailing and instant messaging.

Click on that then you have to type the second half, and it will tell you what the second half will be when you get to that page.

And here's where user Athrogate essayed it awhile back:
