hi.

I've been playing a bit more of the musical instruments lately, and doing some experimenting with recording and had an idea that I'd like to try out.

Basically, it's a game of telephone, but it starts with a person creating a single track audio file. this could be a melody, a sample, a poem read aloud...whatever. Just one track though. They send it to the next person, who adds a new track and/or manipulates the existing audio.

and so on, and so on.

Could end up a complete mess, or it could turn out to be something interesting/ cool.

Unfortunately, in order to play you'd have to probably know the basics of audio recording and how to convert to a wav file and multitracking. If people are interested, but unsure of their abilities on the technical side I (or others) can post some easy tutorials and links to free production software.

any thoughts or criticism is welcome.

edit: Oh, and actual talent not necessary to participate. Just a desire to have some (potential) fun.

Since your edit, I might be down for this. I only dibble dabble, but I love collaborative art. Would also love to see it go beyond audio into other areas of creation!

I have SoundForge 4.5 and access to annoying phone menu prompts. In other words, I am in.

The definitive comedic work on automated phone prompts was performed by Matt Besser on his CD, "May I Help You, Dumbass". Apparently, one of those AOL free discs had a number for tech support that if you lived in new york and didn't dial 1 you would call Matt Besser's house. So he set up a recording device and pretended to be tech support.

SUGGESTION TO MAKE THIS EASIER FOR MOST FOLKS: the first file should have a steady BPM.

Cool! Glad to hear people are into trying this out.

Here's what I'm gonna do: by 5pm tomorrow we'll see who is in the rotation by responses to the thread. I will use a random number generator to create a roster based on the participants. If someone comes to the thread late, we can add them later on in the roster.

As far as bpm goes: yes, it would be a good idea to post what bpm you are working with. this doesn't mean you can't change it by slowing things down or speeding them up. Sometimes things get so mushed that a bpm is not really identifiable, so I would say post if if you can, if not then the next person in line just has to adapt.

I think keeping things with separate track might get a bit unwieldy, so it makes most sense if each person just mixes their contribution down to one track.

I think we should maybe use http://soundcloud.com/ to share the audio. I have created an FOT Labs group there http://soundcloud.com/groups/fot-labs

For those of you who might be beginners in audio production, http://www.freesound.org/ is a great source for audio samples. If you don't already have software, http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is a free cross-platform audio editor you can use. there is also a Windows version of Acid Pro 6 (of dubious legality) posted here if you want to play around.

so pretty much I am thinking that this is a "no rules" experiment, with the exception of the fact that you must incorporate the previous person's audio track into your own.

There also might come an instance where (for whatever reason) there is nothing else you can do to the previous track (or maybe it's perfect at that point, and you don't want to mess with it). In this case, you can "fold" and start a new one fresh. make sense?

any thoughts? I can't wait to get started on this!

Sounds like fun; I am not a technically gifted person, but I do have a smidgen of talent.

OK.  I have Audacity and I know how to use it.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

May I up load a beat or at least try to?

Typing that felt weird.  I'm going to try.  Throw it out if you don't like it.
