Best Live Show Of 2009?

I really enjoyed seeing The Flaming Lips for 40 minutes before the clouds caved in on Philly. Also loved The Avett Brothers and Monsters of Folk but the best show of the year was Swell Season or the free Bill Callahan instore. Hansard is quite the performer and straight up owned a Van Morrison song.

I was greatly dissappointed by Elvis Perkins who was very dull and I went to the Big Suprise Tour with David Rawlings Machine, Felioce Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show. Maybe it's because I've seen each of those a few time but it was soooo boring.

All of the XX Merge festival. Personal highlights included seeing Pipe, Lambchop, and Superchunk.

I saw Bill Callahan play an old movie theater in Boston (The Brattle) over the summer. I didn't know his stuff, and after that I became a card-carrying fan. So great.

to be fair, I didn't see that many shows this year, but this one was just a blast.

I saw the Mountain Goats seven times this year and it's hard to pick just one as the best, but if I had to I guess I'd go with the show at the Bell House in Brooklyn on 12/2.

Aside from them, my favorite show was Art Brut at Johnny Brenda's in Philly.

Dinosaur Jr. at First Ave. I think I made it to a total of 5 or 6 shows, Kings of Leon being one of them (my girlfriend dragged me) so it's not like there's any legitimate competition but they were pretty amazing.

That's interesting - I know there are kinda-sorta rules about that kind of stuff, but I've never known a club that was actually uptight about it.

AS220 is a non-profit community arts center, so that factors into their policy.

They're trying to get around paying the fees to the performance rights organizations, which is going to be difficult for them - Ted Leo is a member of SESAC, so they would owe for him performing his own songs in the venue.
