From your lips to god's ears, but even i'm not that optimistic...

Doing predictions over at my site, but barring injuries, I think we're looking at another Yankees-Phillies World Series, god help me.

Well, looks like the Cards might be starting the season with our third option at catcher.  Don't think it'll be for too long, though.

I just hope there's at least one unexpected team in the playoffs because I've pretty much been hearing the same 4somes for each league from all the experts.

The Mets were obviously my longshot, and I [clearly] don't pay very close attention to the National League, but I do think Jason Bay was a huge upgrade for them, and combined with a healthy Beltran they should do much better than last year.

Despite losing Jason Bay to youse Met fans, I'm very excited about the Red Sox revamped roster.  Adding Scutaro and Beltre to an otherwise stellar infield should make for some awesome double-plays.  Ellsbury and Cameron in the same outfield will be great fun to watch, too.

The Red Sox are going to be the AL Mets, tons of talent, but they'll all be injured by the all star break. It's like they've made it a point to go out and get every single high risk/high reward player. It's surprising they didn't sign Harden. They do have a good bench though.

But it doesn't really matter if someone gets injured because they'll always be able to get someone to fill in, whereas a team like the Rays is pretty much screwed if they lose a top guy. I don't see any reason why a team with Red Sox money wouldn't go out and sign a handful of high risk/high reward guys. Just look at last year, they sign Penny and Smoltz who flame out and the Sox move on without it being a big deal. A small market team would be screwed if they dumped money on those guys and they were failures.

I don't know, if they get far enough back I can't see even Henry throwing money at nothing. Plus, the buyers market in season isn't exactly a gold mine. They might be able to fill one or two holes if they come along, but you can't patch more than that. It's not just injury concerns either, there are a lot of other things they are banking on. The pitching staff after Lester and Beckett is a huge if. Matsuzaka is not a good pitcher having one lucky year, Lackey is a good #3 but has been inconsistent in the past couple of years and it remains to be seen if Buchholz will become more than a bottom of the rotation guy. The offense is good but it lacks the power you usually see in a big market team and again they're old.... and I don't know if I'd want a .250-.260 20-30 HR hitter hitting cleanup. Defensively, they're one of the best in baseball. But, I think the Yankees are going to blow them out of the water this year and somebody from the West or Central is going to take the wild card. If I had to take a guess I'd say they finish at least 10 games back in the East finishing 3rd and 5-6 games out of the Wild Card behind Tampa, Seattle and probably Detroit.

I haven't followed baseball for a good 15 years or something.

If I wanted to get myself up to speed, where/how should I start?

I'm a Rockies fan and they're a trendy pick lately. I'm skeptical of the likes of Buster Olney. But they were neck and neck with the Dodgers last year after having a huge slump, which I think they're too confident to repeat. Plus, there's going to be (slightly) less musical chairs. Thus:

NL West:

Rockies

Dodgers
Giants

Diamondbacks

Padres
