I'm not very familiar with Doug Stanhope's material and haven't listened to the WTF with him yet. My understanding is that he is shooting for the persona of an unhinged Bill Hicks (redundant?). I remember seeing him on Charlie Brooker's Newswipe and that's the impression I got. Am I close?

I don't think Stanhope is "shooting for" anything of the sort. It's just what he is.

I will say, though, that if you don't like Bill Hicks, you will probably hate Stanhope.

I am pretty sure Dick Cheney is pretty much "what he is" too, but I don't want to hear him tell, uhh, dick jokes.

You still mad at me for calling your weird math ranking system of actors weird, Dave?

Here's the thing about Stanhope. He really does make an effort to think about things for himself, and I believe that he has some truly original ideas and insights on certain topics. However, he's grossly undereducated on certain things. For instance, he rails against entitlement yet feels like he shouldn't be "born owing" the government money. In other words, he feels that he's entitled to the infrastructure that we take for granted and doesn't want to pay for it.
I still see him as a philosopher at his core and find him worth listening to. Although I might have to amend my prior statement to say that I disagree with about 85% of what he says.  Who knows what he would be capable of if he weren't so pig-headed.  I find him very similar to Patrice O'Neal in that way (whose crucifixion in the Marc Maron thread earlier this year I thought was totally unfair).

I have a feeling I'm alone on this, but I've been watching Workaholics and laughing a lot despite myself.

I tried checking out a Stanhope special called No Refunds that's on Netflix streaming because I don't really know his stuff and every time I hear comedians talk about their favorite comic, Stanhope's name always comes up. I only made it through about 15 minutes before I had to turn it off. Is this not one of his better specials? If so, what's a good starting place? I don't know if I started in the wrong place or if he's just not for me.

I do like Bill Hicks, FWIW.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

He's probably just not for you.  I mean, he's what Tom would call an ani-mule.  Like I said, I find myself enjoying his stuff less, but I still insist he's worth having around.

Good to know, thanks. I probably like a lot of comedians that Tom and other FOTs would call animules. I don't mind a comedian who says things I disagree with, and I actually think it's a real kind of skill if someone says something I totally disagree with but makes me laugh anyway.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.
