Netflix Instant recommendations thread
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:52:23 PM »
Can we use this thread to recommend stuff on Netflix Instant?

I just watched Kevin Nealon's stand-up hour and it was extremely funny. Something's wrong with all the dolts giving it one-star ratings on the site.

I have been watching some of the oldest films available on Netflix for the last month or so. Unlike Tom, I love that "old stuff", and feel like it absolutely speaks to me. Here's what I have seen since I started this:

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari   1919
Nosferatu: The Gothic Industrial Mix   1922
The Battleship Potemkin   1925
Man with the Movie Camera   1929
Broken Blossoms   1918
The Phantom of the Opera   1925
Duck Soup   1933
Scarface   1932
The Hunchback of Notre Dame   1923
My Man Godfrey   1936
Steamboat Bill Jr   1928
Dracula   1931

Currently about halfway through Stagecoach. I won't bore you with capsules (that's for my blog readers,) but if anyone wants any info, more than willing to share.

The question is a bit too open-ended to answer with any confidence for someone whose taste I know nothing about.  I could tell you that Billy Wilder's magisterially sleazy Kiss Me Stupid (over which I traded a few jabs with Auntie Christina a while back) is available, as is Cutter's Way (a good-almost-great 80's neo-noir recently referenced vis-a-vis Orson Welles), but what do the two really have in common except that (1) I like 'em, and (2) there's no reason to expect that any other FOT would?

I can say with confidence, though, that as an FOT my greatest Netflix streaming bargain over the last few months has been the full 89-episode run of The Larry Sanders Show, which I had not seen prior to Garry Shandling's WTF interview. If anyone else here hasn't seen it and didn't know it was there: Go Watchum.

PS: Thanks, DFK, for that list.  I like that The Old Stuff too and will be using your post as a guide.

I was thinking more like "Hey, I just watched this, and it was pretty good!" kind of thread, which I guess I didn't make clear.

I'm on season 4 of Larry Sanders and I'm really enjoying it. I watched for the first time Ken Burns' The War and The Civil War series recently and quite liked them. I can also recommend the Michael Apted's Up Series, a lot of which is on instant, but not all.

I really liked Harmony and Me. I am waiting for Instant to have it's resurgence because it has either downsized a bit or not grown the way I thought it would.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - While not every episode is available (they're rotated due to licensing), they have quite a few from my favorite era ~1992-93.

If you haven't seen the following episodes already, I highly recommend making time to do so.
  • The Giant Gila Monster - A classic--the old man trying sody pop, the sound of the jalopy, the apologetic Gila Monster--this is one I still quote lines from.
  • The Beatniks - The characters, and their motivations, in this one are pretty funny on their own. Plus, you'll find yourself singing the song from it later.
  • Warrior of the Lost World - The scene with MEGAWEAPON makes this early-80's B-movie worthwhile.

I'm not sure if The Battle of Algiers is still available streaming, but it was last year and it is now one of my favorite films of all time.

I have also been watching Futurama and enjoying it immensely.  Also Louie and 30 Rock.

We just started watching Ramsay's Best Restaurant. Great if you dig cooking shows where its not all about telling someone how much they stink.

I got a very long, desperate form email from the ceo of netflix this morning. Haven't bothered to read it yet, though.  They are reeling a bit.

I would just write, "Oops."

Somebody tell me when Parks & Rec Season 3 is up for streaming.  Thanks.

I rewatch a lot of MST3K and Kids in the Hall on Netflix.

Some other favorites include
