Songs that sound like "Drive" by the Cars
« on: May 04, 2012, 11:24:51 AM »
I am fascinated with songs of this tempo and tone and production:

The Cars-Drive

Let's gather as many of these things because they are all essentially the same song and I think it might be the best kind of song.

For example:
Roxy Music - True to Life

"Sherlock Holmes" by Sparks.  I'd post a YouTube but I'm phone browsin'.
"Drive" evokes this intense nostalgia in me.  When I hear it I can totally remember the feeling of being 9 or 10 and riding in the back seat and feeling hot summer sun on my face mixed with the coolness of the cars A/C.

Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face

I'm going to stop for the night before I fall into a mid-80s music video black hole... too late...

I hated everything about Mr. Mister the first time around, but I learned to really like the synth outro to "Broken Wings."
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

I was between the ages of 2 and 6 when this sound was popular, so I have fond memories of these songs, riding in the car with my mom. I think it's the moodiness. Synths and sax. Probably why I got into Echo & The Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, etc. when I was a teen in the late 90s. Same moodiness.

On the slightly peppier side of Drive:

Ghostbusters - I Believe It's Magic by Mick SmiIey - HD HQ Music Video

On the slightly more enthusiastic side of Drive:

T'Pau - Heart And Soul

On the I-can't-believe-this-is-actually-a-new-song-and-they-did-a-fantastic-job-at-emulating-the-sound side of Drive:

The Ice Choir - Teletrips

I love this thread.

I wish I asked for songs that sounded more like Roxy Music's True to Life, but I'll take it!

Not sure if this works, but FWIW the first song to pop in my head was Nena's "Let Me Be Your Pirate" Nena - Let Me Be Your Pirate

I liked 'Sunset Grill'. Every time I heard it, the synth solo made me think of some extended Snoopy and Woodstock segment from a Peanuts cartoon (btw the music in the Thanksgiving special was kind of funky).
