In fairness, at any given moment, you might decide to break open a bag of kitty treats, and then be forced to close it sadly when you realize they aren't around. They're doing YOU a favor so you don't have to go looking for them. Unless it's Kitty Quiet Time. In which case you should kindly piss off.

House rules (as dictated by the cats) are that ideally, the door should be left open, so that they have the option of coming in and out as they please.

Cats do not have lock- or even doorknob-opening technology.

Sasha once opened a door (that didn't close properly, but was still latched) with this sort of doornob. Even without thumbs, she was able to invade my privacy in the bathroom... remarkable!

I once knew a Burmese cat that could open all doors with this kind of handle.

going to the bathroom is a particularly anxious time for my cat.  he insists on coming in and always gets the door open so he can curl up in the sink or drink from the faucet.

unlike some other cat people i know, i refuse to help my cat get the door open or turn the faucet on (he can do this as well).  it's a dog eat dog world out there and he needs to toughen up.  to this day, he's the smartest cat ive ever had.

Srsly, how in the jeebus are you getting these cats to pose like that? Are you holding a sardine up or something? Anytime I try and take pics of either animals or kids I end up with a shot of the back of their head.

Dunno, he could be counting down to ecstasy. Hard to say.

You know, I think you may be right.   That could easily be the faraway gaze of a masturbating cat.

We actually had to switch the door handles on the doors leading out to the garage and backyard for round door knobs. My cat Sidney could open the doors and let himself out very easily if we forgot to lock the door, which meant once he spent the night trapped in the garage.  :(

He hasn't mastered round door knobs yet.
Too soon?

My wife and I adopted a one-year-old beagle/basset hound mix from a shelter today.  Her name is Molly.  She is such a happy, sweet dog.
