to the OP, im only offering this as a chance for you to maybe fuller understand what WFMU is. WFMU is a non profit radio station, that is not affiliated with any larger institution (like NPR, PRI or a college or university) therefor WFMU is dependent 100% on listener donations. once a year they hold a marathon to raise 80 to 90% of their operating budget. the other 10 to 20% comes from admission to their record fair, small fundraisers and a rental property in the building that they own in Jersey City (at least that is how i understand it, from listening to Ken's State of the Station address over the years.) as far as i know they do not receive any money from government sources, and the one time a few years ago when they did receive a small about of money from a payola settlement they used that money to put on a series of free shows in the NYC area. WFMU has a handful of full-time employes and is relies on volunteers for a lot of their leg work. i get the sense that no one on WFMU is there to make money or get famous. WFMU may very well be the last 100% free form radio station in the country and is also completely in control of their own destiny. to put it simply, WFMU should not exist, but it does, and may very well be the last great radio station in the US.
having been a Best Show fan for many years, and a WFMU listener for even longer i get the sense that all the DJ's on the station are there because WFMU is something that they believe in and support 100%. sure Tom may make small remarks here and there about the station, but i dont believe that he means them. Tom religiously refuses to talk about his off mic jobs, and when praise is lavished on him about some of those things he seems sheepish to accept the praise. at least thats how i hear it.
bottom line, if you really want to help Tom out, maybe you can buy one of the t-shirts on this web sight, or pick up one of the Tom and Jon greatest hits cd's.
maybe im wrong on this but if you really want to support the Best Show make a donation to the station.
