What albums/bands have you disowned?
« on: June 21, 2007, 05:12:33 AM »
Feeling like a total chucklehead, spending the last 20 minutes reading Wikipedia's entry on The Cult (somehow ending up there via my original WP search for info on Morrissey's "Maladjusted" LP), it got me thinking about all the bands and records that I absolutely adored in times long past, that now seem totally and inconceivably ridiculous to me.

Among these include:

"Electric", by the aforementioned The Cult.
"Mother's Milk" - RHCPs
"Stories Without Words" - Spyro Gyra
"Xanadu" - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
"Bring The Noise" (Anthrax version)
"Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" - Edie Brickell (holy fuck is that embarrassing...oh, the things a desperate teenager will do to try to get laid...)

Alright people...now it's your turn to fess up.

Dude - yo need to RE-own "Xanadu."
I'm with you on "Mother's Milk," though...
Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

The Party

This was an album by former mouseketeers that I knew, and loved. Then I got to Junior High.

I thought the Spin Doctors were awesome when they came out while I was in junior high.  They rode this goodwill right up to the release of their follow-up, which I listened to exactly once with predictable results.

I also liked the Doors and Wall-era Pink Floyd a lot in high school, until the arbiters of media hipdom convinced me to shun them.  I've been listening to both again lately though, tying in to Chris Rock's theory that the music you liked when you started getting laid will be the music you like forever.  I think that's true with me to an extent, except in my case the "getting laid" part was purely theoretical.  Yes, I know Jim Morrison is completely ridiculous, but that ties into the appeal... to an extent.  Vocally, although certainly not lyrically, he's still a better template for rock n roll singers than, say, The Guy From the Arcade Fire.  I'm also placing the blame for the droney, post-grunge singers on Pearl Jam's door, not Morrison's.

Dee-Lite.  Groove is in the Heart is still okay, but everything else is so so very very bad.  Or just not for straight dudes.  Can't believe I bought their second album for some reason.

I'd be tempted to say They Might Be Giants, except I suspect I would still enjoy Apollo 13 or Lincoln if I heard it now. I'd just be embarassed if anyone caught me.  Something about hearing other people sing along to them though, or hearing that song "Particle Man", just sets me off.  Like nails on a chalkboard.  Also, the Malcolm In The Middle theme is a little unforgivable.  The NPR incidental music they did is completely unforgiveable.  I think they once had a decent improv comedy show on wfmu, though.  You could call in and they'd write songs about you.  Was that them?  I know they're bros with Laura Cantrell.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers...whoa boy!

I really dug this band way back when. Fond memories of driving around listening to Freaky Stylee and Mother's Milk the summer before college. Blood Sugar Sex Magick was their pinnacle, and it woulda been great if they went away after that.

My theory is this: RHCP had more of a true essence of Funk, when they were just posing and having a fun time. Once they started BELIEVING that they had the FUNK, they ceased to have it at all.

These days, it's just painful to hear them. There's a new single out right now called "Hump-de-Bump" and it sounds like they just let a computer write it.

Fun Fact: I once stood behind Anthony Keidis at a Girls Against Boys show, and dude is WICKED short. We're talking around 5'4" in heels.

While I was coming up with this entry, I couldn't help but hearing Keidis "rapping" (or whatever it is he does) the phrase "Rub-A-Dub, Three Men in a Tub". It just kinda sounded like something from one of their songs.

Oh brother. I used to be obsessed with experimental noise stuff, and did I ever get over that. No more live shows, no more performing in live shows, no more records. Goodbye Zoviet France, Goodbye Merzbow, Goodbye Cranioclast, Test Departemnt, Melt Bannana.

I ditched the entire class of third wave ska. No more of the Toasters, Reel Big Fish, Sublime, Hepcat, Mighty :Mighty Bosstones, or Ziggy Skadust and the Skastronauts from Mars. (note: that last band would've been the name of my ska band, had I not already been in a double death metal band)

Kobekwan:

I think you'll find that was the SECOND wave of ska, coming only about 10 years after the first wave.

Buffcoat, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking. I forgot about the originators of ska, like Madness, being the first wave. Please accept my sincere apologies.

I'm honestly too bitter about the messy breakup of Pavement to be a Steve Malkmus and the Jicks fan.

Steve Malkmus: you're disowned!
(Until you do a Pavement reunion of course.)

AND Smashing Pumpkins died in 1997. As did Weezer.

Wait, whuuuuuuut??
I don't know if we can be friends any more.
Messy Breakup?  It was just a passive aggressive breakup.  Pixies was break up by fax!  (not that I actually listen to Frank Black, but...)
