The Hold Steady.  I don't get it.  They sound ok to me, at best.  The guy's voice is near-unlistenable to me.  And why is all the hype around them that they're like some bar band/third-rate Springsteen and thus "authentic" rock n roll?  Who cares?  Just about every band I've heard on In the Red Records crushes them.

Boys and Girls in America is the best album of 2006.  I don't get it: Bruce Springsteen.  Passable ear candy.  Just like that first Black Flag single.

I do understand why it might not be widely appreciated, though, as a lot of the comedy (yes, comedy) is a goof on Rhode Island (I grew up there, Seth McFarlane went to RISD). The accents are dead-on, the pacing is breakneck, and there are as many sly RI references as there are the more obvious pop culture ones. The newscasters in particular are frighteningly not far from reality there.

I have to disagree about Family Guy getting the accents right. The Peter and Lois characters are the only ones who even seem to attempt it, and are about a 4/10 as far as authenticity. It's "Pah-tucket", not "Paw-tucket" for instance. I do give the show some props though for the little shout-outs that only natives might catch, though.

What city/town are you from Tim K.? Warwick, born and raised, over here.

Oh, so you have a Warwick accent.  Kidding. I grew up in Newport, lived for three years in the South County area (URI undergrad). No I didn't take a yacht to school. I'm in Boston now.

There are variations, as tiny as the state is. I've never heard Lois say "Cranston" but I think she's a dead ringer. But maybe the years spent in Boston have dulled me ear to it.

I don't get it.  Why would anyone pay $150,000 for a record?  That's way too much.  It's not even a regular LP.  It's an acetate which means the sound quality degrades easily.  I mean, yeesh, it already has a number of scratches and skips on it.  I don't get it.

All good points, Fletcher.  I was listening to parts of said record on-line earlier today and some versions of songs we all know and love aren't even the same.  One more reason it is overpriced (lol).

You misunderstand, Jane:  I was referring to the general sense of mystification that the world inspires in me.

Seinfeld.

I hate the characters, they are mean spirited jerks who aren't funny, and at best the show is a deeply tired remake of The Jack Benny Show which actually was funny. Every time it is on I feel like I am chewing gum that has long lost its flavor.

The laugh ratio is so so low.

- KCRW. See above. And besides, how can a station claim to be "listener supported" when I always hear bumpers for beer and car companies in between breaks?

Oh seriously, the KCRW credit card really left me laughing. I mean when I'm driving around Southern California and I can't get KPBS or KPCC yea I'll try the KCRW, but it's got to be the most commercial "non-commercial" station out there.

As for text messaging I aggree, doing it in English is odd and slow. In Japanese however, it's lot faster.

I was listening to the new LCD Soundsystem today. I don't get the hoo-hah over him.
