Here's an e-mail I sent about my next class show (sadtrombone.com please)

I'm inviting you guys to check out my improv 201 class show next
sunday, at the UCB Theatre L.A. at 4:30 pm!

This will be a low key affair.  If any of you saw my last class show,
this is the next class up the chain, so it's expected to be "better"
than that one, or at least more complicated.  Unfortunately, they charge 5 bucks
to get in, but FORTUNATELY you can b.y.o.b.  That's right, I'd
recommend one of those 24 oz. cans of Budweiser they have these days.

EXPLANATION:
our class learned one half of the long-form improv format called The
Harold.  You pay them money and they teach you an improv format,
piecemeal, and you're "done" at 4 or 5 classes.  But then you have to
keep taking the classes forever if you want to stay good at it. So
it's like a low-stakes freemasons or a scientology (or an art career)
for people who think they're funny.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The main goal is to entertain people and make them laugh, so you're
supposed to enjoy yourself!  That's not a happy accident, that's the
whole point!

Why is this e-mail so long?

Okay, so if you got an open sunday, I'd love to see you!

Brian Finkelstein's Improv 201 Class Show: 4:30 pm
Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre
5919 Franklin Ave.
Hollywood, CA 90028
(323) 908-8702

thanks,
John

Somewhere, Todd (maybe earlier in this very thread), there is a video of Junk strutting his stuff.  Very, very funny, and worth digging up.

I gots one.  Note the age guidelines, in case anyone is planning on bringing their nephews:

WOOLLY MAMMOTH THEATRE COMPANY
641 D St NW, Washington, DC

MARIA/STUART
by Jason Grote
directed by Pam MacKinnon
featuring company members Naomi Jacobson and Sarah Marshall, with Meghan Grady, Eli James, Amy McWilliams and Emily Townley
WORLD PREMIERE
August 18 – September 14, 2008
Appropriate for ages 16 & up.

About the Show
Stuart fights to keep the lid on his mother’s and aunts’ simmering angst. But the family’s secrets channel themselves into a bizarre shapeshifter that guzzles soda and chatters German verse. Friedrich Schiller’s classic tale of warring queens inspires a macabre romp into all that suburban America tries to repress.

DC-area FOT, PM me if you want comps.  I should be able to hook it up.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Toronto FOTs.

My band ( Leonids ) is playing at Rancho Relaxo on College Street.
September 5th .
I will post set times when I hear from the promoter.
If you like the indie rock, come on out.
I am the tall guy that sings in the band.

Minneapolis / St. Paul FOT's

My former band, Anchorhead, is having a reunion show at the Hexagon bar on November 15th. My current band, Empire Builder, is opening. I realize that this is still 3 months off but I'm just too excited not to post it.

The last time Anchorhead played the Hexagon a guy killed himself in his car in the parking lot outside (gunshot). My friend found the person as she was walking into the bar. Very sad.

But I hear it's a great neighborhood.

I'm playing every Friday ('till I get the boot) from 5-8 at a bar called Manchester's on 49th and 2nd in New York City, New York.  It sounds somewhat similar to this:www.myspace.com/petevelcro

No cover, and FOT's get free a Salad or Disco Fires or a Whiskey Sour!

Jason Grote might have told you about his new play, Maria/Stuart...but what he didn't tell you was that he was the subject of the lengthy feature in the Washington Post!

My favorite part is when the writer assigns Jason the epithet "the bearded playwright."

Yay!

Sorry if this is embarrassing to you, Jason.

I'm really not sorry.

Uh...  um.  You're sweet.  Uh.

I didn't manage to sneak a Best Show reference into this one, if anyone's wondering.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

"I don't think you're ever really aware of how deeply political his writing is, because he is so gifted at grounding it in the social aspect, in the domestic aspect," says Wendy C. Goldberg, artistic director of the National Playwrights Conference (and former artistic associate at Arena Stage). "That's one of the main gifts of his writing, that it never feels didactic. It always feels theatrical."

Jeez, JG, I am now too intimidated to address you directly anymore. Congratulations on a nice article and your upward trajectory. When you get to the top, will you remember the little FOTle?
