Jay Reatard killed it.

Was he wearing those amazing gold pants?

Didn't look like it.

I was bummed, his shirts were only S or M.

Did anyone go to the aftershow with Jay and King Khan? I bet that was amazing.

Jay Reatard killed it. The Hold Steady were also very good, reminding me I need to give their new album another listen. Jarvis was pretty damn funny as well.

Yeah, I loved his apology for Eric Clapton.* I agree with everyone on the Hold Steady show. For whatever reason, I've never listened to them much, but I may have to start now.

* Not that I was there; I had to settle for the streaming video feed. It improves a little if you go to fullscreen and hook your computer up to your stereo.

Constructive Summer by The Hold Steady is my favourite song of this year so far.
"Son, there's a thin line between crazed and rabid"

It will be hard for anyone to beat the Hold Steady this weekend... they seemed just as at home on the big stage as they would be in a smaller club.

It was a treat to finally see Jarvis after over a decade of being a fan. He was his charismatic self, but his set itself was just okay in my eyes... It was amazing for fans like me, but I'm not sure if the song selection won over any new fans.  'Black Magic' was a barn burner and 'Fat Children' and 'Cunts' were also highlights... though I would have liked to hear a Pulp song or two... but that wish is probably unrealistic.

I'm really impressed with how pleasant the festival is.  The sound is clear, food is relatively good and inexpensive, the crowd is remarkably polite, and you choose can stand right up front in the pit or set up a blanket and relax under the trees and still enjoy yourself.  Way to go, Shovel Festival!

Yea, I've noticed the sound is exceptionally good.

This year left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. I guess it was just a combination of bands I had seen several times with bands I didn't care too much about.

Today was easily the best of the three. Boris were great, although their set was way too short.  The third stage really bummed me out since they were so far behind schedule I missed King Khan and the Shrines for Les Savy Fav.  Ghostface & Raekwon killed but that crowd was way too big for the third stage area.  I was also disappointed that Cut Copy didn't make it, apparently they had flight delays or something?

I'm not sure who Pitchfork can book for next year that'll be a big draw, but a triumphant return from Ted Leo would be a good start...

No doubt they were probably just sold out of the bigger sizes.  Bet he's been on the road for awhile.

Yes, Benno and I went, and it was amazing. I have pictures, which I will probably post tomorrow. I was BLOWN AWAY.

Jarvis, OMG, JAAAAAARVIS. It was amazing. Electrifying. Orgasm-inducing. I actually cried. Jarvis and I had A MOMENT. He looked at me. We made eye contact for thirty fucking seconds. He pointed at me, and he sang, "Girls like it too," which is a line cribbed from John Peel's sex advice letter to his brother apparently. Oh, Jarvis, I do. I really, really do like it, but only with Jarvis, so don't get any ideas, fellas. And I wasn't imagining my moment, either! The girl I was talking with about the MAGIC OF JARVIS before his performance turned to me and whispered, "I'm so jealous!" Oh, Jarvis. (If only he had pointed at me when he sang "I wanna be your lover." You bet your buttons I sang along to that one.

Jarvis is my Elvis, Beatles, and Prince, but way better than all three. He's beautiful. A beautiful, pasty English sex-stick. When he said, "It's a bit hot, would you mind if I take off my jacket?" I screamed, along with about a hundred girls and a dozen guys. (Yes, there were other people who screamed, "I LOVE YOU, JARVIS," some of whom were boys or girls with lots of testosterone.) When he deftly shrugged off his jacket with his shoulders, I screamed again. And then I might have shouted, "Take off your shirt!" and there was laughter. (He didn't take off his shirt, but he did take off his tie later!) Oh, there was a moment where the guitarist was having a bit of tuning trouble, and Jarvis helped, and the girl next to me cooed, "Oooohhh, he's helping him!!" I swear to god, us girls go fucking nuts for Jarvis. We love him, it's true.

God, he's so beautiful. I had the best time that night. The next day was pretty amazing, too. I saw the same kid who stood next to me during the Titus Andronicus show the day before. (They had sort of opened with Pulp's "Common People," by the way, which was very funny!) That kid was wearing a Boris shirt. He let me take a picture of him. Cute kid! So weird that I stood next to the same kid on different days! Boris was amazing, by the way. They fucking blew out half the electricity, they rocked so fucking hard! I also met Richard's wife and his beautiful baby. I swear, he has the cutest baby ever. I booped Max's nose and got to hold him for a picture. Super chill baby! I love him. Thanks, Richard! Before I met up with Richard, I saw most Les Savy Fav's set. Whatshisface went into the crowd a bunch of times. This one guy next to me motioned him to come over. Beardo locked eyes on him and nodded maniacally, jumped the barricade, and made out with him and a couple of other guys. Then he went way out into the crowd and came back aloft in a GARBAGE CAN. Pretty cool! Before LSF was Apples in Stereo. Rainbows shot out of my asshole.

I can't wait to share my photos with you.

I forgot to mention this! After the Cheap Time/Jay Reatard/King Khan show (actually, after the bar closed about 30 minutes later), Benno was kind enough to walk me over to Randolph St so I could catch a cab. Things were looking kind of scarce, but then this guy with a Pitchfork artist badge ran over and asked us if we were looking for a cab. We were both going downtown, so we decided to split the cab. Shortly thereafter, he spotted a cab and waved it down. We talked about how amazing King Khan and his band was, I mentioned my Jarvis anecdote, et cetera, et cetera. I ask him about his artist badge. He's not one of the performers. I turns out his name is Ryan. He's the founder of Pitchfork. WTF!! So weird.

Also, I saw a redheaded rock chick lady with an artist badge in my hotel elevator. She was with J. Mascis! I gushed about J's shredding and stuff, and she was very nice and gracious and cool! GOOD TIMES.

Yes, that was great!! Turning around and seeing him rise from the crowd in that garbage can was very, very weird.
