I like what I've heard from the Ethiopiques collection, but with 20+ CDs I'm paralyzed by choice and don't know where to start.

Steve, you should check out Ethiopiques Vol. 7. It contains the entirety of Ere Mela Mela by Mahmoud Ahmed, one of the greatest albums ever recorded by anyone, IMO.

2EreMelaMela.  Though the Ethiopiques I have is vol. 10 and it suits me just fine.

And this, on wax, which came in the mail yesterday:

Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Thanks for the tip!

I have 8 on my iPod, I picked it up at the library. I'll look for 7 (and 10).

Jebus, these Ethiopiques you all are talking about ... what's this all about? I've never heard of them but you guys are all talking them up ... I've got to go listen to some of their stuff.

Ethiopiques is a series of compact discs featuring Ethiopian and Eritrean singers and musicians. Many of the Ethiopiques CDs compile various singles and albums that Amha Records, Kaifa Records, and Philips-Ethiopia released during the 1960s and 1970s in Ethiopia. Prominent singers and musicians from this era appearing on Ethiopiques releases include Alemayehu Eshete, Asnaketch Worku, Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke, and Tilahun Gessesse. However, some Ethiopiques releases are new recordings.

The Paris-based world music record label Buda Musique began the Ethiopiques series in 1997 and initially compiled Ethiopian popular music releases from the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the subsequent CDs focus on traditional music, while others highlight individual musicians or specific styles. As of September 2007, there have been 23 releases. None of the CDs feature modern-day synthesizer-based Ethiopian pop music. Francis Falceto is the producer of the series.

Some songs from Ethiopiques Volume 4 were featured in the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers.
Really some quality stuff.

My first exposure to Ethiopiques was watching Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers. It features a couple of Mulatu Astatke tracks, one of which is "Yegelle Tezeta," which I love.

A vast improvement over their first record (which wasn't bad by any stretch). I saw them in New Haven last week and they were great. Evan "Funk" Davies has my eternal gratitude for exposing me to them a couple summers ago.

Thanks to Tom I just picked the new Boston Spaceships and it's so good that my brain is turning to mush.

If you think that one is good, pick up their other album from this year, The Planets Are Blasted.  Top notch stuff.

I plan on getting the rest of their stuff I've just been a little broke lately. I like most of the stuff that Pollard does. Thanks for the tip though, that will be my next one.

It's foggy and rainy outside and I'm having such fun listening to this.

"You want me to recognize you and I won't. I won't acknowledge you! I deny you. So you keep begging and begging. The door is slammed on you. I want nothing to do with you. You will die unrecognized by me."
