I know. I don't know if I ever would have found that song if it wasn't for the movie and that would have been a shame.

The Jaynetts - Sally Go 'Round The Roses

Nice! Time to dig my 45 of that one out...

I don't know if it counts as a forgotten hit, but has anyone else heard Ted Taylor's version (the original, I think) of (Love Is Like A) Ramblin' Rose, which the MC5 murdered on Kick Out the Jams? That's another of my favorites. Once you've heard it, you'll understand why Wayne Kramer uses such a stupid voice when he sings it.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Okay, so I don't understand the brouhaha over my mentioning Louie Louie, but whatever.

I think one that's even more of a undiscovered classic is The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens. It's a really sweet song about a sleeping lion. I discovered it once on one of my dad's old albums.

I'll see if I can rustle up an mp3 of it.

No, but my nickname in high school was Token... Maybe that's what you're thinking of? That's probably what you're thinking of.

The Crystals - He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)

This song makes me weepy and aroused at the same time.  Don't judge.

Sam Cooke - "You Send Me"

I guess it's not overrated, it's probably properly rated and appreciated, but what a sweet song from a sweet guy who died too early.

The Louvin Brothers - Must You Throw Dirt in My Face
more Louvin Brothers - Knoxville Girl (a murder ballad hipsters might now from Nick Cave's version; it includes the following stanza;

"She fell down on her bended knees
For mercy she did cry
Oh, Willie dear, don't kill me here
I'm unprepared to die
She never spoke another word
I only beat her more
Until the ground around me
Within her blood did flow."

we play for keeps down here, yo.

I could play this game all day, but a few that come to mind are Ben Folds' Hospital Song, Blue Oyster Cult's Zen Archer, and let's go with The Majestic Twelve's Condoleeza Check My Posse.
