"Cool" music that you don't like

I can't stand emo rap. 99 percent of the time the beats suck and it's almost always whiny. I also have a bad taste in my mouth about it because I've met a lot of people in the scene and they haven't been very good people. The only good thing that has come out of the scene is that some of the good elements of it crossed over to mainstream hip-hop.

I'm afraid I'm going to need some kind of description based on the formal aspects of the genre, not just names of rappers or bands that I don't know, thank you very much.

I don't even know if it has a good description anymore since it has kind of branched out into mainstream and a lot of things are called emo rap that probably are in some ways but lack some of the qualities of how it started. I also am not an expert on it. I normally hear it described as intelligent hip-hop aimed at white kids- many times performed by hipsters. I don't know if that is a fair description anymore... the Minneapolis scene still has that feel. I don't know if I buy the "intelligent" label.

Hm, that wasn't so bad.  The Atmosphere song was just kind of mediocre, but I kind of liked Doomtree, even though they were basically a cross between Digable Planets and a Benetton ad.

That doomtree thing seemed okay.  Unfortunately, I have a real hard time separating hip hop from the idea of race politics, so I can never listen to stuff like that, because white people make it.

I like intelligent rock music aimed at black people.  What's that called?
