Natural Language Processing?  That is the field in which I work. What would you like to know, Trembling Eagle?

no, I was thinking of Neuro-Linguistic Programming

From the very little I know of it, it's nonsense.

There is some controversy about establishing a solid research base, in my opinion the principals are solid (since it draws from a lot of evolutionary and social psychology). I bring it up just to say Sarah Palin seems to be a "natural" in her ability to build rapport.

Not with me.  Her charm eludes me just as Ronald Reagan's did.

Sarah Palin isn't wooing anyone over to the republican vote who wasn't going to vote for McCain in the first place.

I'm not so sure about that. I have no evidence to back this up, but I think that normal, non-partisan dumbasses are impressed by Palin.

I have decided to adjust my brain so that I am now expecting a McCain victory. If Obama wins, it'll just be a happy surprise.

It's not about Palin though... they could have any woman set up as the VP candidate and they'd be framing Obama for "smearing" her, attacking him as harshly as they have been since the conventions.

The fact of the matter is that Obama doesn't respond in a strong way to criticism from the right, his speech at the DNC wasn't all that great (at least not when it came to convincing skeptics that he was more than just a person who talked about "hope"), and the RNC stole the show right out from under him. That's the change you're seeing there... it's not about Palin's personality or charm or cuteness or whatever.

The republicans are playing the same games they always play by creating drama that isn't really there, the media is focusing on that drama like they always do and overshadowing the issues, and the dems are being as weak as ever. We just don't know how to win an election against these evil fucks.

And I really hope I'm wrong.

I thought Obama's DNC speech was epic, and prior to that, I had been supporting him only as an alternative to pure evil. Now that I enthusiastically support him, he's Dukakesque.

Fair enough. I'm glad to hear it.

I thought that speech was pretty lackluster.

From the very little I know of it, it's nonsense.

It is nonsense.

This jackass, meathead salesman at my office was going on to me about Neuro-Linguistic Programming the other day (incorrectly explaining it, it goes without saying). It's clear that he attributes way too much of his success in his current position to his perceived skill at Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and not nearly enough to the fact that his dad is tight with the CEO of the company by an amazing coincidence. He's like a Wurster cahracter made flesh.
I'm warning you with peace and love.

If you're going to toss NLP in the rubbish bin I guess you'll have to toss in the rest of social psychology.
The hell with Chomsky too I guess.

Here's a good summary (in my opinion) of the controversy over NLP by someone who feels it is bunk. I read this guy regularly; he has a strong skeptical point of view regarding pseudoscience and woo. He's a neurologist at Yale and runs the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe podcast.

http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=228

I first came across the term NLP when I heard about Derren Brown, the English mentalist who implied for a long time that he used the techniques in many of his tricks (he's since backed off, partially because NLP is so controversial and partially because it became clear he could achieve many of the same affects through traditional magic).

 ???

Wha? This is a ridiculous thing to say. Given the context, it makes me hope you're trying to make some satirical "I can say anything I want, and if I do so with enough confidence and contempt, people will think it's true" commentary.
