I just saw a documentary last night about
General Idea, a group of three conceptual artists who were based in Toronto (until they inevitably left for New York.) These guys produced tons of hilarious, influential and ultimately quite moving work in just about every medium you could think of.

website. (The other two both died of AIDS in 1994.)

One Year of AZT and One Day of AZT, 1991
It blew my mind to imagine these guys working in Toronto in the early '70s - at that point, it was an incredibly staid, uptight town. They pretty much invented the contemporary art scene in Canada!
The doc was called "General Idea: Art, AIDS and the Fin de Siecle", and it's well worth a look if you have a chance.
