Iron filings are a rich source of iron.

Also HUMAN BLOOD!

Yeah but then someone can put a giant magnet near you and make your arms and legs all point in the same direction.

I signed up for a CSA (community supported agriculture) for the first time this year. Basically, you pay about a month's worth of rent up front, then you get about a week's worth of vegetables or more from June to November. So I've been drowning in produce all summer.. for a while there I was picking up one watermelon a week!

In addition to riding my bike for 15 minutes to work, I lost weight from eating so many vegetables and cutting back on processed food.

Saute some dark leafy greens with oil and big chunks of garlic. They will taste amazing over anything from rice to pasta, and are one of the most nutrient dense foods out there.

Great tip. That sounds delicious. I never think of combining leafy greens w/ a grain; I always think salad and I don't really love salads.

But I have become adept at stashing food into other food. For instance: food processing spinach, kale, carrots and other vegi's into a liquid that is dumped into pasta sauce and a meatloaf-type thing. Sometimes it's hard to keep up w/ the CSA box so the food processor trick works pretty well for the stuff that didn't get eaten. This is a toddler-style way of tricking myself into eating healthy but it works.

I also ran 10 miles yesterday. The weight isn't falling off but it's slowly, slowly inching down.

The weight ... slowly, slowly inching down.

I'm just trying to get my weight back up to my chest and shoulders where it started.

I've been thinking of doing this next year myself ...

My current physique is like Zachary Brimstead but only from the knees down.

Hmm, that is tricky because it's on the shorts/sweats borderline.

Something a lot of people do is wear something they don't mind losing at the start, then dispose of it once they warm up along the way. With other clothes underneath of course.

Good luck!

I'm thinking about going w/ a long sleeved undershirt, t-shirt and shorts. Maybe throw-away gloves.

Thanks for the good lucks.

It went great, thank you.

I didn't stop to walk and I "ran my own race" (which is slow and steady).

Also, I listened to David Cross' audio book for the first 10 miles so it was really a pleasant experience.

It was cold but I would do it again.

Congrats! Sounds like a successful first half marathon to me.

Congrats, DFK and Colonel.  Great news for both of you guys.

The thing I've most feared -- the fact that I would get insanely busy once the semester started and stop going to the gym -- has come to pass, more or less.  But I still swim laps at the pool at Rutgers, and I ride my bike all around NYC, and (aside from a trip to Peter Luger's Steakhouse last weekend) I'm still eating pretty well.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.
