Woody v. Martin
« on: July 29, 2011, 07:27:11 AM »
I pulled this over from the Hate Pit topic. I threatened to compare Woody Allen to Martin
"Cold-sore"sese using my peculiar head-to-head match-up system. Of course, it means only as much as you want it too, but it keeps me typing when I could be out pillaging.

I have pulled my favorite 10 films from each director, and I match them up head to head. In the first 7 rounds, it is my opinion that the movies I am pairing up are of relatively equivalent worth. The match-up winner is then decided by examining what's left.

Basically of equal value

Taxi Driver v. Annie Hall

Manhattan v. Raging Bull

Crimes and Misdemeanors v. Goodfellas

Sleeper v. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Zelig v. After Hours

Mean Streets v. Hannah and Her Sisters

Husbands and Wives v. The Departed

Now, Woody wins, in my opinion, because what's left from his top ten is better than what's left from Scorsese's. Those would be

Love and Death, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Sleeper

over

The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence, and Kundun.

But that's just me.

Manhattan placed on a level with Raging Bull.  Is this what the end looks like?

I was also wondering about this.

I'd rate Raging Bull above every other movie by both of these guys. It's an all-time favorite of mine. I'll admit that I generally like Scorsese's work and generally strongly dislike Allen's work--partic his Bergman knock-offs.

Whither The King of Comedy, Dave? Were you not into that one? I'd put it just below Raging Bull and just above Taxi Driver. I'd also put Shutter Island above Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, so what do I know?

Suffice it to say that Scorsese wins it for me. I do not have the wherewithal to show my work via DFN's excellent rating system!

I'll try it:

Basically of equal value:

The Color of Money vs. entire Allen ouevre

Leaving over: entire Scorsese ouevre minus his worst film

Marty wins!

Surely we can all agree that THE KING OF COMEDY is the best film by either director, right?
It ain't ego, it's my love for you.

Can we do Woody Allen v. Stanley Kubrick next? I think Woody would win that one hands down too. Just consider the potential match ups:

Something Else v. 2001: A Space Odyssey
Bananas v. Barry Lyndon
Whatever Works v. Dr. Strangelove
Take the Money and Run v. A Clockwork Orange
Small Time Crooks v. The Shining
Hollywood Ending v. Lolita

Well, it's pretty clear that my opinions are my opinions. Though maybe I haven't said it quite often enough yet, eh?

I'm just kidding around, Dave. It seems as though my "funny" post came off as a little more aggressive than I wanted it to. Sorry about that.

In all honesty, Woody Allen isn't that bad, and I'd at least give Manhattan and Annie Hall the upper-hand over Scorsese's lesser films. "Annie Hall = Taxi Driver" seems a bit much though.

These probably make more sense in your head. I fall on the Scorsese side.

Taxi Driver v. Annie Hall (BIG TIME)

Manhattan v. Raging Bull

Crimes and Misdemeanors v. Goodfellas

Sleeper v. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore(Though I'm no big on either)

Zelig v. After Hours

Mean Streets v. Hannah and Her Sisters

Husbands and Wives v. The Departed

Let's start comparing tennis players and swimmers next.  They're both involved in sports.

When I compare Woody Allen to Kubrick, I wind up with Husbands and Wives and Radio Days v. Lolita and Spartacus, and I give a slight nod to Woody on that basis.
