Haven't seen my dog, Hank, in months. Ran across a picture of him on my hard-drive and couldn't resist launching a new thread.

Pet pictures, please.

I actually have a new pet bird, which wasn't planned for. The past two days when I've woken up and walked out of my room, a bird has been flying around, breaking my dishes. I think it's the same bird, and I can't figure out how it got in my house. I don't have any broken screens or windows, and my flues are all shut. It's the weirdest thing. I think now I have to name it, because it obviously wants to live with us.
-
That leaves ... something to be desired. Hope you cover your fruitbowls at night. Is it a small thing, like a finch? Or a pigeon/seagull/crow?

Damn, I wish I had a digital camera so I could show off all my beasts.
Rainer, Hank strongly resembles my dear dead dog Katie, except that his snout is slightly longer. They both belong to the generic "yellow dog" type (or "ideal," as I like to term it) to which all dogs seem to revert when miscegenation reaches its apogee. In a documentary about dogs I watched a while back, I was very surprised to see Katie clones happily roaming the streets the world over

I did a little research. It's a Chimney Swift. I've named him Bert.

The only thing I knew about Hank when we adopted him from a NYC Pound in 1993 was that he was 6 months old and wandering around Central Park and that he might have been abused. Since then, I have seen a lot of these "yellow dogs" and found it interesting and unsettling in equal measure. As if Hank were a Kentucky Gentleman, and then I see armies of Colonel Saunders all around on my drive home from the vet (a throwaway comment our fearless leader made that still resonates with me as being top tier nightmare).
Dogs know. My wife told me that she once took Hank for a walk down a forest path. As she approached the basin, this unseemly character started toward here, stepping out of the shadows, as it were. At that point, Hank rippled his "lips" and bared his incisors in a fierce display of "don't even try, asshole." Because he never does that unless he needs to.
Somebody recently threw a cinderblock through the back window of our rowhouse in Baltimore, and Hank didn't do anything. Just stayed in his basket. The police actually caught the guy in flagrante delicto. Hank probably thought, whatever .... I'm tired. Let's let the cops deal with this one.
Love that dog.

Dorvid,
I know cute kittens have been devalued by LOLCATS, but I must say that Mona and Max are supremely darling.
-
Lazer Allin?! Those little a-holes told me they were going to the mall.
That explains the hundred-yard stare.
Thanks, Rainer.

A teeny little guy:

-
Howowowowow do you make friends with a bird?!!
-
The Birds is not a scary movie. How can you have a scary thing that can be defeated by one man with a hat, a ski mask and a chainsaw? And that guy would be the GOOD guy.
-
I object: one man with a chainsaw would be no match for swarms of angry birds. Several people with nets, perhaps. And having seen several grown men panic when a bat was flitting around the upper reaches of the bar one night, I defy you to claim that people of either sex don't go a tad loony at the thought of some flying thing getting caught in their hair. Add the possibility of pecking/biting, and pandemonium ensues. I know, I know, people are extra phobic about bats, but I bet if it had been a sparrow, all the same people would have started squealing.
The bat story had a happy ending, by the by: one unfazed fellow brought it down to the floor--gently--with his shirt, and I scooped it up and released it outside. Me, I would just as soon have seen it remain indoors and take care of some of the mosquitoes.
-

I remember my younger brother and I watching a re-run of Lost in Space on our small, portable black-and-white in the "book room" in Massachusetts in 1972 when my crazy Scottish mom ...
... came hurtling through the living room, past us, and into the kitchen. A scream, and then, again: through the dinner room, into the living room, only this time with a beret jammed down to her ears and a bat pursuing her. It wasn't actually pursuing her (probably just trying to find a window to get the hell out of dodge) but it cemented itself firmly into my brain.
The memory, not the bat.
-
The Birds is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.
-
Perhaps this will clear up the confusion: I meant a BIG hat.
-
The grogginess mixed with the surprise must have made Bert seem like a falcon in my eyes. Still, I opened the door and ushered him outside as gently as possible. I think after the second time, his feelings were hurt, because I haven't seen him since. Come back, Bert! Well have a Supercalifragilistic time!

And that's what my pet would probably look like, if I had one. It's one reason I will probably one day leave my shoebox Manhattan apartment for a life considerably less urban. So that I can own dogs and they can run free without being confined to 700 square feet and the occasional walk on a leash.
-
Heck, even Lubec has leash laws. Campobello, however, does not; perhaps you should look into settling there. Unless you can afford to buy a lot of land where you can impose your own rules, of course (and convince your dogs never to stray from it).

You people are going to make me get a digital camera. And are you going to regret it when I do.

Sarah you definitely should get a digital camera. If for nothing more than to show us proud pics of your menagerie and the lovely place that is Lubec! If you need help choosing one let me know -- I know how to get a cheap one that still takes great pics and isn't overloaded with useless bells and whistles.

I am not saying she is not cute now, but she was SUPER CUTE as a pup. Please note the pangaea of pink noseflesh and her blue eyes which lightened with age.

Since I actually talked about The Birds on the air, I feel obliged to mention that, like John Junk, I think the birds is plenty scary but, like Sarah, in the back of my mind I've always thought that all those people needed were some tennis rackets and that would be the end of that.
I'll add my boys (The Professor and Donald) to the cute parade in a short "film" my friend made of them eating.

I have cute four-legged brothers and sisters:
This is Vinnie, who sometimes gets cold and NEEDS to wear a sweater while posed on the cute chair in the living room:

And this is Cole [Porter] who is a kitten and adores Vinnie and Vera. He can open cabinets pretty well for a 6 month old kitty:

I had finally convinced her to take me to the pound so I could get a cat. I didn't see any I liked, except for him. He was a stray and they didn't really know him though - and I didn't want to take home some insane cat. We went to the other pound location, and then went back to pick him up. I was just drawn to him for some reason.. He came home and ended up being the most awesome, perfect cat ever. He's a Norwegian Forest Cat, btw, which are badass.

I was going to say. . . . But, to be fair, it's hard to keep a spayed lady slim.
Ginger reminds me very much of two of the best dogs in the world (not the nicest --that accolade still goes to Bandit; no matter what uta/Julie says, nicest does not automatically equal best): Snoopy, the dog I grew up with, and Katie, who died in 2000 at the age of 16. Both were wonderful, and Snoopy, at least, was very fat.
I hate it when people overfeed their beasts. It's just another form of animal cruelty, yet so many people can't resist. Certainly, my parents are guilty of it. In 1996, for example, they took care of my three cats for six months, and when I finally reclaimed my beasts, they were huge (actually, I only got two of them back; my parents stole my lovely Rhodie, who was sort of a gray-and-white version of Goomba). Mary looked particularly grotesque: she was one of those very slim ladies--a very dramatically marked calico with the build and yowl of a Siamese--and, fat, she looked most unnatural.
-
I like Vinnie a LOT.
:) He's a good boy. He's incredibly smart, but only in ways that make him more neurotic. He also barks WAY too much. But overall he's a sweetie.
-
We adopted him in '93 in a shelter off of Central Park in NYC. His tag said his name was "BINGO." With all the crap he ate, how did he last so long?

Ha!
That's cute & funny.

My cat Zo tries to comfort me after shower time. She mews pathetically and runs over to me as soon as I step out of the shower, rubbing against my legs in what I assume is an effort to comfort me. She just can't believe the ordeals I put myself through on a daily basis.
-
Our shower is one of those old-fashioned combo bath/shower deals and one of our cats likes to prowl along the edge of the bathtub while someone is showering. He gets between the clear plastic shower curtain and the cloth other curtain so he can see without getting wet.
-
Both cats stare at me when I'm in the tub. Nico, the small one, has fallen in a few times, and both kitties have drank my bathwater. (just a taste -- while I was in the tub)
Nico will sit on the edge of the tub and cry and paw at my face while I'm in there. Bathtime gets them VERY excited.

My cats used to do that when anyone would take a shower and I thought it was out of concern. And then I realized that they were just begging for food.
-
Sprinkles will watch the water through our glass shower door like she wants to attack it. when I sprinkle her with water from over top of the door, she freaks out and runs away.

I used to have a cat who especially liked to lie in the sink when the faucet was dripping. When I wanted to give her a special treat, I'd crack it open a bit more so a very thin stream would fall on her. Then she'd be in heaven.
She was an odd girl.
-
how about this:
Sparkles is a maniac. When we feed them their wet food, all she wants is the gravy. She drinks the gravy from both of their plates and then walks away. 90% of the time, we then hear her throwing up the liquid 20 minutes later.
Do I just stop feeding them wet food?
-

Nico likes it when I pet her with wet hands. By the time I'm done getting a bath, she's soaked from head to tail. She also enjoys letting the faucet drip on her.
Bunch of weirdos, those cats.
-
Oh, this reminds me of a pointer that might be of use to some of you. If you have a cat who drives you nuts when you're doing stuff in the kitchen, pat him/her thoroughly with your greasy/wet/otherwise sullied hands. Your cat will immediately get down to the business of cleaning off what you've deposited on him/her and leave you alone for a bit. Sure, you'll then need to wash your hands before you get back to work, but it's worth it for the respite.
I have even considered filling a spray bottle with some kind of greasy liquid--or perhaps the water drained from tuna fish--to spray on my cats to distract them from harassing me when I'm doing something tempting in the kitchen. (Oh, what I would give sometimes for kitchen doors.)
-

This is also a good way to give them liquid medicine if they won't hold still. Just put some on the top of their paws and they have no choice but to lick it off. It makes them nutso.
-
Ooh, that's a very good tip, erika!
-
also, if you have to give them medicine or do anything else they don't want, just wrap them up in a towel so that they lose their squirming abilities.

Not to be a sad sack, but I regret to inform you that Hank was put down yesterday. Cannot really complain as he lived a good 15 years, but even so ...
Haven't heard the Best Show in a pig's age. Time to get up to speed ...
-
Oh, this is sad. I loved Hank. He reminded me of my dog Katie, who died some eight years ago. A plain old yellow mutt. Best dogs in the world. (Sorry for repeating myself [see reply #3, above]; at least I'm consistent).
I'm sorry, Rainer.
-
Thanks, Sarah.
One of the signs was that he was doing that Elephant Graveyard thing. I had my kids for the weekend, and took them to my parent's house. At first, I was hopeful ... Hank was wagging his tail and running all over the yard and had a bowel movement. But then later, he walked into my dad's workshop (dark as india ink) and just sat there by the fridge.
But the suffering is over. He never liked those pills that I had to wedge into cheddar cheese chunks. Is there anything more violent than pinching a dog's cheeks to get his mouth to auto-magically pop open?
-
Sorry for your loss, Rainer. I'm glad Hank had a nice long life with you and yours.
-
Ditto, Rainer. Sounds like he had a great life.
-
Hank!
My sympathies go out to you massively, Rainer.
xo
-
And what's with the absence, Rainer? There are a couple of preemo DC-FOT-related events coming up this summer.
You're still in Arlington, yes? Come have a sody! (with me and maybe three other dudes.)
-
Sorry for your loss, Rainer.
-
Ranier! I was just thinking of you the other day and wondering where you had been. (I don't know why...)
I'm so sorry to hear about Hank. He looks like he was a good boy and 15 years is a good long lifetime. Still, I know it's still hard.
Hang in there.
-
Thanks, all. I picked up his ashes today at the vet. The small, wooden container -- screwed shut but held in place with a rubber band -- was strangely heavy. Also disconcerting was a little sticker on the bottom reading "HANK DIETZ."
Dorvid, yes, let's get together. Please don't tell me that PFT has come and gone.
I'm living in Reston now (don't judge). Got a top-secret job and moving forward with the divorce ... things are much better with my wife now, no more hostilities, just a Legal Matter, baby. I'm so behind on listening to the Best Show because I got to the point where I didn't want to "waste it" when I was feeling so down. An odd thing, because when I was at my lowest, The Best Show was somewhat of a lifeline for me. Time to catch up.
-
Dorvid, yes, let's get together. And please don't tell me PFT has come and gone.
He frickin' postponed! Again! (Something better must have come up for that weekend, so God bless him - it's awesome that he comes here at all. I'm only mad because I love.)
The Drafthouse told me he intends to reschedule.

Funny you should mention that. (long story)
Point is, I'm very glad that you're back on your feet and are back on the board. I look forward to hanging out with you and watching what I say - one can't be too careful around any resident of Reston, let alone the ones who won't say what they do for a living.
You should meet Johnny Yesno before he heads back to Colorado. Later this month, we're seeing a Jason Grote play alongside the man himself! (Grote, not Tom)
PM if you're interested.

Dog owners should read this. Warning about a line of toys that can really hurt your dog. Pretty popular brand too. (Four Paws)

Rainer, hope you're doing okay. I'm approaching a similar situation with a 17 year old cat, so my heart goes out to you.
-
An odd thing, because when I was at my lowest, The Best Show was somewhat of a lifeline for me. Time to catch up.
I also found the Best Show at a pretty low point in my life, after a divorce and whatnot and it got me through things splendidly. It totally was a lifeline for me. I don't think I watched tv or listened to anything else for almost a half year while I poured through the archives.
-
Jennifer,
Thanks for the kind words. Good luck with your cat ... not sure what the average life expectancy is for our feline friends, but 17 is not too shabby.
Totep,
It's sick how therapeutic the Best Show is, eh? Of course, in saying that, I putting myself out there to be "fixed."

I'd like to throw my heart into the ring for anyone who has lost an animal friend, including their animal friends.
My first dog Spidey died on his way to the emergency clinic and I cried like a baby....
I didn't think I'd get another dog for a good long time but after I thought on it I realized that Spidey had made me a dog owner for life (thanks buddy); there are plenty of awesome animals out there that will bring miles of smiles, you just have to go pick them up.

I'm much sadder than I expected to be about the recent death of a dog who lived up the street from me. His name was Griz, and he constantly got loose and roamed happily around town. Many's the time I'd see him trotting down the street past my house and, an hour or so later, see a car heading up the street with him in the passenger seat, his head out the window, tongue lolling, once again having been caught by some good Samaritan who knew where he lived and was driving him home. One day this summer, I was pottering about in my front yard and looked up to see him walking purposefully up the street. When he caught sight of me, he slowed down, clearly expecting me to try to catch him. When he realized I wasn't going to--he was on his way home, after all--he ambled over and honored me with some very fishy kisses (he'd obviously been poking around in the lobster bait joint next door a moment before). He was a great dog, and he got hit by a fire truck the other night. I miss him.
-
I feel terrible when an animal dies.
Also on a sad note: cancerface has been gone for a while now. I don't know where he went, but we haven't seen his body or anything. We recently had some neighbors move, so I'm thinking they may have taken him, but I don't know.
-
Oh, that makes me sad, too. I hoped Cancerface was going to make it.

Cancerface is back! Cancerface is back!
I just got a text from the wife that he's back and looking good. This fits him M.O. from last year (leaving mid summer and coming back early winter/late fall.) I don't know why he does this, but I want to believe it has something to do with him living a life as described in the Wyclef song "Gone 'til November".
-
As I was scrolling down this thread to get to the new post, I paused at the pictures of Cancerface and said to myself, "Maybe Andy is going to say he's back." And you did.
I'm very happy.

I would never claim that he he is better than any other dog but, to me, he is wonderful. I would gladly loan him out to any FOT for a day. I am glad y'all have enjoyed the photo. I swear I get choked up looking at that photo even when he is lying at my feet like he is right now.

i only ask because my dad has a brown boston who gets mistaken for a boxer rawther frequently.
either way, yours is a nice-looking dog!

Nice! We've got those for our dog for snowshoeing and and hiking. He does the same thing for the first few minutes. We also have panniers for Hurley and, when we put it on him, he IMMEDIATELY starts walking sideways like he is drunk. It's pretty funny.

only because you asked. she is sort of totally insane about food; she thinks all food belongs to her, and can be (actually, is) a total dick whenever guests come over and we have food in the house. we always have food in the house, by the way.
that's PG-13. the other awful thing she does is a hard R: she LOVES (loves loves) eating her own feces. and is smart and quick enough to do so on a fairly regular basis. which leads to other issues, which i will not divulge in a public forum.
other than that, she's great. the best. very smart, weird, funny. i like her bunches.

On the scale of gross things dogs do, eating his/her own poop is way up there.
Cat poo? Pretty common.
Other dog's poo? A little less common.
His/her OWN poo!? That's pretty rough.
But she is a cutie nonetheless. Still a winner and a "best of the best".

here's one of cancerface. I promise, she's not as bad as this picture looks. I tried to get the eye booger out, but she wouldn't let me and the ears and face are mostly scars from the past (before we started her flea treatment.) She was curled up in my lap while I combed out a ton of loose hair, but then ran as soon as I put her flea treatment on. Usually she stays away for a couple of weeks after I apply the treatment.

Some cats I know saw a mouse *one time* outside their back door and they keep a vigil on it every evening just in case it comes back, at which time they will do... what?
Cats do not have lock- or even doorknob-opening technology.
-
But they also don't have the wit to understand that they would need it.

God forbid you go in a bathroom and your cat can't come with you. They just can't stand to be on the opposite side of any door from you.
-
In fairness, at any given moment, you might decide to break open a bag of kitty treats, and then be forced to close it sadly when you realize they aren't around. They're doing YOU a favor so you don't have to go looking for them. Unless it's Kitty Quiet Time. In which case you should kindly piss off.
-
House rules (as dictated by the cats) are that ideally, the door should be left open, so that they have the option of coming in and out as they please.

going to the bathroom is a particularly anxious time for my cat. he insists on coming in and always gets the door open so he can curl up in the sink or drink from the faucet.
unlike some other cat people i know, i refuse to help my cat get the door open or turn the faucet on (he can do this as well). it's a dog eat dog world out there and he needs to toughen up. to this day, he's the smartest cat ive ever had.

I once knew a Burmese cat that could open all doors with this kind of handle.
We actually had to switch the door handles on the doors leading out to the garage and backyard for round door knobs. My cat Sidney could open the doors and let himself out very easily if we forgot to lock the door, which meant once he spent the night trapped in the garage. :(
He hasn't mastered round door knobs yet.

My wife and I adopted a one-year-old beagle/basset hound mix from a shelter today. Her name is Molly. She is such a happy, sweet dog.

Wow! He reminds me of a cartoon cat, but I can't figure out which one.

My dear dog Duchess died yesterday. My other dear dog, Bandit, and I are very sad. The cats seem unfazed.
-
My condolences, Sarah. I'm really sorry to hear that.
-
Horrible news. So sorry, Sarah.
-
Sorry, Sarah. We'll be thinking of you.
-
Thanks, guys. She was very sick and almost fourteen; the last three plus months were hard and horrible. I truly believe she is better off in the ground (I can see her grave through my window now), but it's still rotten sad. And what makes thing worse is that Bandit is almost fifteen (a fairly big dog, too), and I'm afraid that grief may tip him over the edge. That, or inactivity: his hind legs are giving out, and trotting around after Duchess was his main source of exercise. I'm thinking I may have to get him a dog just to keep him in shape.
On the plus side, my house will no longer be slick with mucous, pus, and blood. Soon it will stop stinking of death and decay. The fly population will drop. Silver linings. Big fucking deal.
-
Aw, Sarah ... I'm sorry.

My thoughts are with you Sarah. It's so hard. My sympathy... :(

Here is a piece of advice: Do not attempt to set up a new computer two days after your dog has died. I think I just ruined mine (it was delivered on Monday, shortly after Duchess died). Or maybe it's a lemon (I'm sort of hoping this is the case).
Learn from my mistake.
-
Sorry for your loss. I'll overnight cancerface to you if it'll make you feel better.
-
You know, it probably would, but I'd worry about making yet another change in my household so soon. Besides, the trip would be hell for the boy.
-
i was considering taking a puppy from my sister-in-law's new litter. now, i'd rather not.
i'd rather send it to you, Sarah. although, he is tiny and she babies them to a fault; i don't know if he could tough it out in the wilds of Maine.
-
I cannot have dogs for this exact reason. Even as a puppy I'm looking at them and thinking "someday this thing is going to die and it's going to destroy me."
also, we figured out recently that cancerface is a girl.
-
How lucky, then, that Cancerface is a unisex name.
Thank you for the thought, Baron, and please know that if your sister's puppy did move in here, the wilds of Maine would not be an issue; my beasts lead pretty sheltered lives. To tell the truth, though, right now the thought of volunteering for more pain down the line makes me feel queasy. Which is not to say that if someone stopped by and offered me a middle-sized, short-haired, good-natured, lazy adult, I wouldn't say yes in a flash.
-
Well, my parents 7 year old Australian shepherd died today. A frisbee dog that tore it's ACL, got morbidly obese during the recovery. She was a shell of her former self, but a great dog.
-
i officially hate this thread now.
-
Well, it's not here to be loved, exactly.
I'm sorry about your parents' dog, Andy. Poor girl, first losing her ability to run and then dying at the far-too-young age of seven.
-
What's killing me right now is that my surviving dog, Bandit, is at least fourteen, possibly older, so I'm going to be facing his death pretty soon, too. That is going to wreck me.
-
BOO :-\
-
It just keeps getting cheerier, eh, Baron?
-
NEVER LOVE, NEVER LOSE!
-
Yup. Is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? I frequently think not.

I arrived at this point all by my own self, snookums.

Awww, can I get a pet name?
-
Sure, peaches.
(I have carefully made a key: Fredericks = snookums; Dave from Knoxville = peaches. Should either of the heretofore named wish to dispute his random term of endearment, he should file the appropriate paperwork before 7/7/11.)
-
Unless Bonnie wants to fight me for it, peaches is just peachy
-
Condolences, Sarah.

I bought a new camera last week and wanted to test the video functions out...

That was lovely, even though poor yellow dog did not like being filmed one little bit (I loved brown dog's equanimity).

Yellow dog is Penny, right? She was sort of a comedienne, though, wasn't she? Both totally sweet doggies.

Yeah, I thought yellow dog was Penny and brown dog Hurley, but I didn't want to offend them by getting their names wrong. Dogs are so sensitive about such things.
Lucy is a charmer, too, by the by.
-
Yeah, Lucy looks like a good dog too! And I'm partial to the name Lucy for a pet. So much so that I briefly toyed with spelling it "Looocy" on a form during a vet visit just because I wanted to amp it up a bit.

Yes, Penny = Yellow, Hurley = Brown. And Hurley DOES get pissed with people call him "Harley". Or when they say, "Oh, after the dude on 'Lost', right?"
No wait, that's me. He doesn't care actually.
I think when people bring up the Lost connection, from now on I'll just get all indignant and say, "No, he's named after the Weezer album. Duh!"
Penny doesn't mind being filmed but some of those shots used a makeshift steadycam (http://littlegreatideas.com/stabilizer/diy/) which is just a pole with a weight on one end and the camera on the other. She doesn't care much for that.
Lucy = ADORABLE!
My wife LOVES the name Lucy. If we were having a girl, that name was gonna be it. Howver we are having a boy and we got nothin'.

Dogs are cool...I think this is an appropriate place to post this.

This evening, my dear dog Bandit died. He was at least fifteen and a half, possibly older (I never could get a clear answer from the various people who had him before I). He was a big old beautiful mutt, the gentlest and sweetest-natured dog I've ever known. I got to live with him for fourteen years. He was my dearest and truest and most constant companion. I will miss him forever.

Sarah, I know we talked about this via twitter, but, still want to post my condolences here. Sorry to hear about your friend. Never easy.
-
Thank you, everybody.
I'm very sorry to hear about Bandit, I hadn't heard until today.

One week today.
Also, I was remiss not to say this earlier: thank you, especially, Big Plastic Head; I know you are grieving, too.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Sarah - just read about it.
