Is Avalanche Bob the new Spike?
« on: November 03, 2015, 04:36:47 PM »
He calls semi-regularly, usually near the beginning of the show, and he is, shall we say, "non-standard issue."

Look, I am not saying I want this. I am asking if we collectively think it is happening.

Every generation gets the Spike it deserves.

No such thing as the "new Spike"... there is only one Spike.

Spike had depth, Avalanche Bob has none

Bob has a unique musical style. Spike likes doo-wop.
Too different.

Did Spike have depth from the start? I would argue that he didn't until Tom persisted with questions and plumbed that dark, disquieting depth. Time, plus Tom's efforts, provided the depth.

I don't think there's much else to Avalanche Bob besides snowboard yodels and a devotion to Alex Jones.  By comparison, Spike has (god help me) an interesting personality and a rapport with Tom that makes for good radio.

This is a valid point. He may have yet to snowboard from his icy chrysalis and spread his wings.

He may have yet to snowboard from his icy chrysalis and spread his wings.

That is beautiful imagery, Jason.

Perhaps he just needs to find the note to shatter his chrysalis.

Just like Ella Fitzgerald used to do to that wine glass.

Shades of exploding GM trucks on Dateline NBC in that commercial.

Also: no, Jon, I don't think Avalanche Bob is the new Spike. He needs a lot more interests. Well, two more.

I was somewhat down on Avalanche Bob after his prior call, but I feel like he redeemed himself in a major way by going out and getting his own Charley Morgan in the form of Kevin Kline's son. That's hustle. He did claim this, right? It feels weird that we're not talking more about Avalanche Bob revealing that that son of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates is now a part of AV33's band.
This may be the year I will disappear.

I look at it like this: if Avalanche Bob isn't calling The Best Show, then he's calling his local sports talk show, and who wants that? Let him amaze and astound us with his bizarro take on music.

Owen Klein (sic) is referenced on this page: http://www.avalanchebob33.com/Rock-Star-Briarwood-NY.html.

I was quickly able to ascertains that Owen Kline  (non-sic) is an actor known for The Squid and the Whale and also suffers from juvenile diabetes.

This is Avalanche Bob right chere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEWjFYSo5Yo&list=FL2N5I6KY4DUkc0wmThUrE-g&feature=share&index=4

Oh dear.

The concept of "snow-whop" is also upsetting: "On one song, he might sound like Tony Bennett and another like a pop star from yesteryear. Whatever style he's working on comes out magnificently. The best part about him is he's come up with genres that are completely new. He does a thing called snow whop, taking cues from old school doo-wop."

Avalanche Bob reminds me more of Stevie Blue.
