I'm 30.  I will concede that my  6-year-old-self may have been thrilled if he went to this concert with your 15-year-old self.  At age 6 I had yet to even enter my big-fan-of-CATS-the-musicalLittle-Shop-Of-Horrors phase.

You animals.

I wish I had a dog. I'd name him "Rollins Band" and sick him on you adult contemporary rockers.

I would challenge you to reassess the collected works of Anne Murray, now that you're no longer obsessed with "cool".

And Roger Whitaker.

DFK, have you ever read Lester Bangs' Anne Murray reviews? You should.

Maybe when they were written, especially if it was for Creem, which I read religously as a teen. I don't remember them though. Are they collected in a handy book form?

I wouldn't be afraid to admit I liked uncool artists if I did, but the thing is I just don't. Often they're uncool for a reason- because they're terrible.

That brings up a good question-- uncool bands that are actually kind of good.  I have to think about it, but this has got to be worthy of a thread.  Remember, by listing a band that is uncool but kinda good, you're not saying that you like them, only that they're uncool and you kind of have to respect them musically, but you don't have to listen to them.

Prog rock bands should be disqualified from consideration, however, that their whole reason for existence is to demonstrate musical prowess and "elevate the genre." (And it's a genre I don't particularly care for)

Wait, AllisonLeGnome.  Are you saying that every band you listen to is cool, and every band you know but do not listen to is uncool?  You've got to admit that's a wee bit...well...Ronald Thomas Clontle.

And why does a band have to be cool to be listened to?  In another thread, I mentioned that the song "Time" by Alan Parsons Project does not get turned off by me when it comes on the radio.  I can think of few less cool bands and less cool songs than that, but I totally enjoy hearing it. I totally disagree with the "not cool = terrible" equation.

Never mind. This is getting dangerously close to Stephen King's "Cool/Not Cool" article in EW.

Of course not- that's not what I said at all. But I actually don't listen to... maybe this is too regional a reference, but Stop & Shop music. Or Adult Contemporary radio. Celine Dion, Phil Collins, that sort of stuff. As I said, I would have no problem admitting to it if I did. Trust me, I've long ago resigned myself to uncoolness. I don't mean "not cool = terrible" at all- precisely the opposite. Terrible artists are often uncool because they're terrible, not the other way around.

Teaching math just pays the bills. I'm a (Phil Collins apologist) musicologist!
