My first 1/2 marathon is coming up in December, and boy am I excited. I've been keeping a good pace; on some short runs I've gone really fast and it's been great, but on generally I try to keep a steady, consistent pace.
Today we ran 11 miles, and I ate 6 waffles when I got home. It's weird how I'm now hungry all the time, and it's ok now. Come to think of it, I'm still hungry! Hmm....time to go rummaging through the pantry again...

Colonel Panic, are you training for another race now?

Also, I'll take this opportunity to once again extend the 1/2 marathon invitation to anyone near the TN/Memphis area. It's this one: http://www.stjudemarathon.org/ It'll be an awesome experience!

Go go Doodle!

What does everyone like to listen to while exercising?

I need new running music. If anyone knows of songs with lyrics where truth is spoken to power, I would like to know. Especially good if values are challenged: justice, self, responsibility, choice, freedom, God, etc. Right now my playlist consists of The Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream, Nine Inch Nails, and Future of the Left, although I've run to later period Talk Talk, DJ Shadow, and Black Devil, so I'm open to anything really. The main thing is that it distracts me from the fact that I'm running.

Hugman's playlist on a previous page of this thread is pretty fun to run to.
I guess I'm weird though, in that I like to listen to stuff along the lines of Isobel Campbell, Emiliana Torrini, and The 6ths while I run. Maybe the juxtaposition of running pains with soft melodies distracts me from thinking about running.

andrew Wk, true! Close Calls With Brick Walls has some great songs to run to as well. I also like adventure music, like Secret Chiefs 3, Estradasphere, Italian film composers.

I gotta say I only ran to the Nike/De La Soul running album twice.

I only like music on the treadmill. Outside, I feel like I need to hear the outside sounds.

All that off-topic stuff aside, one of my favorite things to run to is an mp3 of a UK ragga/jungle pirate radio broadcast from the 90s. General Malice presents Champion Sound.

I find that Nardwuar's show makes an hour at the gym go by really quickly.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

Hi DoodleJump,

The next one I'm doing is in May so I've fallen off the running bandwagon but it's like -20 degrees in Fargo right now and it's hard to get out of bed. I hope to start training again in January.

Good luck in your run!

thanks! I ran the race a few weekends ago, and I don't know if it was because it was a new experience for me and I was super excited or what, but that was the best 13 miles I've ever run. It was so much fun and I exceeded my pace goal by a minute.
I am training for one now in March that is in my hometown. I am hoping to get another minute shaved off.

I need running shoes recommendations. I live on the edge of Roger Williams Park that has nice walking/running trails.

I say the best thing to do is find a store that specializes in running shoes. They can custom fit your foot according to the shape and stride at which you run. The shoes will be expensive ($80-$200 generally) but you can really feel the difference when you run. I make an hour drive trip to a specialty store and they are so nice and helpful!
I love my shoes. I have Saucony...don't know the style right off.

I'm in total agreement w/ DoodleJump about shoes.

I 'broke down' and bought $100 pair of running shoes at a running store. and it's so worth it. I had been getting by w/ the $40 versions for years but in hindsight I think this may have been ridiculous and even dangerous to my body.

I have a friend who runs in Converse, however. Whatever will get you out there.
