Hey everybody -
Even though The Best Show was snubbed by the hosts of Shut Up Weirdo, I am asking you not to call them and prank their show. That doesn't get anybody anywhere.
If you feel strongly about the snub, write them a polite email, asking them why they didn't call in, even after being asked for two straight weeks. Tell them that they need to show respect to The Best Show On WFMU and keep their rookie status in mind before they talk about how they are 'WFMU's civilized call-in show'. Remind them that they need to know where they stand in the order of things. Remind them that they need to pay respect to The Kid.
You can email Andy Cohen and Frangry at the WFMU contact site, over here:
http://www.wfmu.org/schedule#AF
Then feel free to post here. If you want to get your frustrations out, do it in this thread.
Thank you. We are fine young men and ladies, and we do not disrupt other shows to make our points!
Tom.

Though it'll take a great deal of restraint not to pull one on them I'll adhere.
However, I will be calling to at least inquire where they got the audacity to criticize other shows.
The way they were panning 7SD on their FIRST show was unfathomable.
7SD is a thousand times more entertaining on it's biggest train wrecks than hearing two benign people yap about nothing.
-
I never do anything I claim I am going to do. It's a life strategy.
-
I'd love to call to discuss Mathematics to find out whether or not they are actually civilized. I don't think it's a prank if I'm serious.
-
can we start FedExing them rings to kiss?
-
I just want everyone to know that you can prank The Acousmatic Theater Hour instead. We won't put your call on the air, and to be totally honest we don't even know how to answer the phone yet, but if it will make you feel better, go for it.

This sounds like a great opportunity for me because I don't know how to make prank phone calls. Thank you so much, Jason Grote!

Excellent. I'll start combing through my Beckett on Film DVDs and putting together a soundboard.

I believe "Shut Up Fool" was a line of dialogue in Endgame.
-
Remember when Vladimir told Estragon, "Shut up, weirdo!"? Good times.

You been ROSENCRANTZED!!!
You been Duranged?

You just got Albee'd.
(You just had a miscarriage.)

You just got Mameted.
(You just got triple-crossed in an elaborate con-game.)

You just got Rabed.
(You either just got sent to Vietnam or had an existential crisis in the misdt of cocaine-fueled madness.)

ACT I
A country road. A tree.
Evening.
JAMES, sitting on a low mound, is trying to take off his toupee. He pulls at it with both hands, panting. He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again. As before. Enter VLADIMIR.
JAMES: [giving up again] Nothing to be done.
VLADIMIR: There's man all over for you, blaming on his toupee the faults of his head. [He takes off his hat again, peers inside it, feels about inside it, knocks on the crown, blows into it, puts it on again.] This is getting alarming. One of the thieves was saved. It's a reasonable percentage. [Pause.] James?
JAMES: What?
VLADIMIR: Suppose we repented.
JAMES: Repented what? [A flash of shabby mischief in his eyes. Runs at Vladimir, dances, giggles, waves his hands in the air.] JAMES JAMES JAMES JAMES!! [Exits.]
[Vladimir sighs, sits on the mound.]
VLADIMIR: That, for a start. [Pause.] Nothing to be done.

I believe "Shut Up Fool" was a line of dialogue in Endgame.
I always thought that was from No Exit.
-
im here to vent: i went back to the archive and listened to their show again. i made it past the first 15 minutes this time. the obvious problem (besides not paying their dues) is that instead of talking to the audience, they talk to each other.
way to alienate, jerks.
-
I listened to the show from last Friday yesterday, but only made it about halfway through (and even that took about 3 tries). Their show suffers from what sooooooo many (almost all) podcasts suffer from too - reason for existence. Sure, the technology exists to record your voice and throw it out there, we all have access to it - but what do you have to say that makes you even think you should? And not just that, but are any of these people seriously asking themselves if their life or commentary on it are even interesting enough to actually invite (force?) people to listen? So many people just hit the record button and start babbling without even coming up with a reason to do so in the first place, and then toss the label "talk radio" on it afterwards, almost as an excuse. Which is an insult to the greats of talk radio, who apparently make it all seem so easy that "Joe Numbnuts" and "Sally Nopersonality" think they can jump into the arena as unfocused as they are too.
If the show is around in 6 months, I might peek in again, but Be Quiet, Jerk is in some rough, rough waters right now. That said, I wouldn't miss the show tonight for a hundred bucks. :D

No, that's "Hell is other people's jibber-jabber."

i think this proves Tom's point, "You don't have to say everything that comes into your head." essentially, just because you CAN, doesnt mean you SHOULD.
and to hear that frangry is twenty-eight is a real shocker. it has nothing to do with her voice, everything to do with her whining and behavior.
-
and to hear that frangry is twenty-eight is a real shocker.
Oh yeah, wow, that is shocking. I wouldn't have said more than 21 via the pics and hearing her.
Good for her, I guess.
-
"Shut Up, Weirdo" lost me when they named their show "Shut Up, Weirdo."
-
"I was trying to think of a show I could do, and I was a big fan of 7 second delay, and a big fan of Scharpling's"
from shut up weirdo's 7SD fill-in show, by way of explanations, at about 8:45
http://www.wfmu.org/listen.m3u?show=28644&archive=45352
I'd like to think that their banter is leading up to a big gag in a future show, kind of like the lead up to the h-man show. All that pain, finally released with one big gag. You know?

"I was trying to think of a show I could do, and I was a big fan of 7 second delay, and a big fan of Scharpling's"
on their comments, it says;
From: Tom Sharpling
HOLY MOLY this is bad. This causes me to yearn for a SSD trainwreck.
From: Andy Cohen
You're not my real Tom Scharpling -- the real Tom Scharpling would know how to spell his last name.
i have no doubt he's a fan of Tom (just show some respect).

Exactly. Who does this guy think he is, Jerry Lee Lewis? Bend your knee, son.

Oh Julie... err I mean Marguerite. Yetta is the most famous dog on WFMU.
-
eww boy this show isn't going well. the last half hour was just their friends from high school and some drunk lady and some guy standing in his shower. :P
-
Just to set the record straight, this isn't Andy Cohen from Silkworm is it?

We must unleash the grammar nazis on this sentence.
-
The sentence is a correct use of the subjunctive mood.
-
Seems to me there's a surplus of "I"'s. Or is that your idea of a joke?
-
Listened to one episode. Not impressed. It's like Seinfeld, but even more pointless.
-
This entire fiasco is cracking me up. :D
-
Seems to me there's a surplus of "I"'s. Or is that your idea of a joke?
I was just talking about the part the editor was commenting on. You're right, too many "I"s.
-
On the plus side it did make the show a bit more listenable.
-
That show is horrible!
-
Frangry's uncle was great, though.
-
I had a listen and it was hardly Welles doing War of the Worlds; in fact at times it was borderline intolerable. However, I'm a fairly appalling radio voice myself and if FMU offered me a show, I'd do it in spite of the slings and arrows of the FoT. I'm going to leave them alone; it's on at like 11pm on a Friday for me and if I'm listening to the radio then something has gone wrong.
-
Yes, this is awesome. Can you do The James Menagerie?
I live to serve!
LAURA: (Takes a glass ornament off the shelf, hands it to Jim.) Oh, be careful; if you breathe, it breaks. (It's a little man-shaped figurine. Jim holds it up to the light.) See how the light shines through him?
JIM: It sure does shine! Say, just what kind of a thing is it supposed to be?
LAURA: Haven't you noticed the toupee on his head?
JIM: Oh, a James, huh?
LAURA: Mmmmm-hmmmm.
JIM: Poor little fellow must feel kind of lonesome.
LAURA: Well, if he does he doesn't complain about it. He stays on the shelf with some fellows who don't have toupees, and as long as I move him next to this little glass radio figurine and glass phone figurine on Tuesday nights he gets along nicely.
JIM: Say, where do I -- (Suddenly, the figurine seems to come to life! It wriggles out of Jim's hand, runs up the length of Jim's arm, dances, giggles, waves his arms in the air.)
FIGURINE: You got glass James--(Startled, Jim makes a sudden movement. The figurine plummets off his shoulder and to the floor.)--sssssssseeeeed! (Hitting the floor, his glass toupee breaks off. Laura picks him back up.)
JIM: Is he broken?
LAURA: Now he's just like all the other mutants.
JIM: You mean he lost his--?
LAURA: He's lost his toupee. It doesn't matter. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise.
-
FYI They both now have seen this thread.

Frangry's uncle was great, though.
The best! I had to keep replaying it because we were laughing too hard.
-
So this show's about a 15 year old and her dad?
But seriously, I don't know what Ken & Andy's show is, but ew bouy, it can't be worse than SHUT UP WEIRDO. Thumbs down.
Ugh, and enough with the bloggers.

True, or the finer points of silverware placement, that kind of thing.

Awesome! Will I be pushing my luck if I ask for Glengarry Glen James?
-
Frangry's trying to imply that all the wackjobs who called in were from the FOT fold? That can't be.
Why is she so (fr)angry?
-
So I couldn't resist. I had to listen to it, too. Honestly, I just skipped through it to collect some bits and pieces.
The most telling part of the broadcast is when 28 year old Frangry admits that her best friend didn't watch television until she was, GASP! 20 years old.
"She wasn't allowed to watch television until she was 20 and she missed out on A LOT of things, let me tell you.
"Shes my favorite person in the whole world, BUT a lot of the time we'll be talking about stuff and she'll be like, 'What? What's... MTV?' You know?"
Tom would GOMP a person who spoke like that, plain and simple. I waffle between who I hate more. Andy is the obvious choice because he's rambling to the point that you can predict the swerves in his conversation before he does. But I think this Frangry is worse. She's a simple-minded girl who really thinks she's complicated.
Okay, enough ranting. Done.
-
Man, I really gotta listen to this show.

wait if this is the dude from silkworm, all bets are off. best band

Yeah, me too. Just can't bring myself to it though.

To be fair, it usually takes a long time for talk show hosts to develop their craft. Andy and Frangry have been on the radio for precisely three hours. On the other hand, I think a lot of the criticism of their show is legitimate. You don't see any anti-Night People or The Acousmatic Theater Hour threads on here.

I'll totally admit to sucking up to Jason G. I mean, he has his own website and stuff.

I like it!

Listening to shut up wierdo on the archives, and it is more boring than Public Radio fundraising. The woman's voice sounds shrill and irritating and his voice sounds like he belongs talking loudly and nasally on an iPhone at a Starbucks.
The title of the show alone sounds like a podcast that someone made in March 2005 and abandoned the project a couple of episodes later.
Ew.
EDIT: Oh, and Hi everyone (first post)! I've been listening to the podcast for more than a year now, here in Helsinki... Sometimes even live, but it is VERY late here. I am definitely a friend of Tom!
-
I hate to say something nice about that show, but it inspired me to make my own weekly podcast hour. It's going to be awesome! How much do microphones cost? Can I just use the one that came with the karaoke machine?
-
I just listened to an hour of Be Quiet, Jerk in the WFMU Archives.
That thing needs some re-tooling. The only good part of the show was when that one guy DID prank them and proclaim that Tom Scharpling is the King of WFMU and Frangry said he was the best caller ever ... Or at least it would have been if she hadn't gone on to say that about at least three more callers as the show progressed.
Look, I don't hate Andy and Frangry. I even thought that it was pretty funny that Andy had his kid in the studio. But I hope that, for their sakes, they go back to the drawing board and remember to KISS THE RING before returning to the airwaves.
-
Zaht wahz Frrrahngrrree's ahncle.

Frangry's "Oh, THAT explains it" when Julie Marguerite said that she was from Chillicothe, OH was telling. I guess the descriptor "East coast snob" needs to be added in front of "raunchy jerk."
SO TRUE!
I have a new, genuine appreciation of Julie from Cincinnati Marguerite from Chillicothe, but I imagine Mr. Scharpling will have a different opinion.

Oh, I see what you mean, though. His opinion will be different because some FOTs made the enemy's show interesting. Now people might listen again.
I didn't want to admit this, but Marguerite happens to be my sister (we're Irish twins!) and she has a dog named Yetta, too. It's a joke we have between us, but you would have to be our irish twin to understand. Although I really can't be responsible for what she does, I should have more strongly discouraged her from calling. I'm not sure anything I said would have made a difference, though. She probably meant no harm and only called because she's a huge fan of TBS, too. She and I both hated to see Tom Scharpling disrespected. I never would have crossed the line like she did, but you could hear for yourself that she's kind of slow. She got the looks and I got the brains.
-
I'll totally admit to sucking up to Jason G. I mean, he has his own website and stuff.
I also have a MySpace page. I'm very bona fide!
I really do appreciate the fact that no one has trashed the show before we've actually been on the air. I've listened to the show, and it's definitely a first show -- I'm surprised by how stiff I sound. Part of it is that radio is really, really hard, and another part of it is that Karinne is all sexy-voiced and mysterious like Dorian and (our sometime 3rd host) Danny and I are more goofy, in the bantery Andy Breckman vein. And the stuff we're playing is something like the Dusty Show, Kenny G, or Bryce. So basically we have to figure out how to take this thing that's like when you're a kid and you mix all the food on your cafeteria tray, but all the food is WFMU shows, and make it into a kind of delicious radio gumbo.
Also: when the mic was off, Danny and I made some great jokes about Beckett that cracked us all up, but once it got turned on, we got totally spooked.
-
MY GOD Frangry. In one episode:
1. East-coast snobbery
2. Claims to be a "blogger of note"
3. "I don't own a TV"
4. "Well, I do, but I never watch it!"
5. "I just use it to play my Nintendo NES" (made sure to point out it was an NES so we'll all know she's super hip and retro)
Andy Cohen seems like a nice fella, though.
-
I like her talking to a 17 year-old about drinking...
"You're DEFINITELY missing out..."
I guess this is not a family program like The Best Show.
...in all honesty, I don't think I'll be listening to this show. It reminds me of when I worked at the Conde Nast company, in a really really bad way.
-
I forgot about that, but the telling the kid to drink while she was babysitting was actually kind of disgusting, given the whole of the circumstances with the possible fire before that etc.
Thumbs down, rookie.
-
Awesome! Will I be pushing my luck if I ask for Glengarry Glen James?
How can I deny you, Mr. G? One more.
(A booth at a Chinese restaurant. JAMES and OTHER JAMES, both drinking.)
JAMES: I do those things which seem correct to me today. I trust myself. And if security concerns me, I do that which today I think will make me secure -- like stock up on toupee glue. And every day I do that, when that day arrives that I need a reserve, a) odds are that I have it, and b) the true reserve that I have is the strength that I have of acting each day without fear. (pause) According to the crazed dictates of my mind. (pause) Radios, telephones, chat rooms, sound boards stocked with disconnected audio clips. Now: what are they? (pause) An opportunity. To what? To win notoriety? Perhaps. To annoy? Perhaps. To "indulge" and to "learn" about ourselves? Perhaps. So fucking what? What isn't? They're an opportunity to James one's fellow man. That's all. They're an event. You find a public forum, you make a call, you send an email, it doesn't matter, "You got Jamesed." What does it mean? What you want it to mean. (pause) That's all it is. We're all different. (pause) We're not the same. (pause) We are not the same. (pause) Hmmm. (pause, sighs) It's been a long day. (pause) What are you drinking?
OTHER JAMES: Yoo-Hoo and cough syrup.
JAMES: (pause) Well, let's have a couple more. My name is James, what's yours?
OTHER JAMES: Also James.
JAMES: You're about to get Jamesed, James.
OTHER JAMES: You too, James.
(Pause. They stand up giggle, dance, wave their arms in the air, use one hand to steady each of their toupees.)
TOGETHER: JAMES JAMES JAMES JAMES JAMES!

wow, I'm 5 minutes into Shut Up Weirdo and I don't know if I can take it.
Holy shit. This is terrible. She's popular and a blogger? He went to Starbucks? enthralling.

is that Eugene Murman?

Awesome! Will I be pushing my luck if I ask for Glengarry Glen James?
How can I deny you, Mr. G? One more.

Amazing.

I fucking hate these people.
on a happier note, though, I have officially turned the corner on Julie. She's gone from my least favorite to my most favorite FOT.

Did anyone blame the Jews yet?
Classic.

I like how they are relying on Fangry's friends to call in for the show to be successful.

Shit, Andy, I forgot that I had a grudge against you! I'm not certain you should turn that corner. I appreciate the sentiment, but if you knew what I just thought when I remembered that you were that Andy, I think I would be your least favorite FOT again.
You are that Andy, aren't you? Because I take it back if you aren't.
-
which Andy? Also, how you feel about me has no bearing on how I feel about you.
-
Aren't you the mean Andy that hated me?
-
probably. now you're my favorite. funny how that works.
-
It is funny. Yetta and I just had a good laugh. I think I have something you posted, which was one of the first really hateful things anyone ever posted about me, hung up by my desk at work. Maybe it was from the FOT Matt, though. I always got you guys mixed up. I never would have thought you were funny if I remembered my grudge. That should teach me a lesson about grudges, but it won't.

Not SKWM Andy Cohen. It caused a little dissonance in my brain, too.
Andy Cohen (the Hebrew Hendrix) lives in Chicago, and is a lawyer and facemelting guitar player for the great Bottomless Pit.
This other Andy Cohen seems to be just a bit rude.
Ike in Kalamazoo

I think it's just a fact of life that talk show hosts always are each other's enemies.
Howard Stern v. Imus and Greaseman and the rest. That NY Times magazine Rush Limbaugh piece had him trashing all the other conservative talk show hosts. And remember when Bob Edwards held a "funeral" for Ira Glass?
-
Did anyone notice that Andy Cohen snubbed TBS again on 10/10/08? I haven't heard much chatter on this. It could be old news for all I know--I've been out of the loop.
If I'm correct, at around the 42:43 minute mark (mp3), it goes like this:
Caller: "The government for not admitting the truth about UFO"
Andy Cohen: "I think that's, ah, Tuesdays at 11:00, that's the call-in, that's the show that you want to be calling into. Did I get that right?"
**If I had the technological prowess I would post the audio file for the exact quote.

Frangry's uncle was great, though.

not to mention, she stabbed a guy in the hand with a fork because he called her, "toots?" everybody start buying stock in forks, frangry is going to make us all rich.

Thanks, martin. I'm really proud of this one.
-
The main reason I was hoping the calls would stop--it was actually making the show listenable!! Finally it's true mediocrity became apparent anyway...making it easy to abort.
Point is...That show does not deserve a free ride from FOT! >:(
(I'm usually so positive and pleasant, too. WTF!)

Damn you, Shut Up, Weirdo! With your "no such thing as bad publicity."

Dear Tom Scharpling
frangry:
I would have I called your show had I known you existed. Thanks for the looney callers, they made my night.
xo,
Frangry
Haha, it’s true. Frangry had never even heard of WFMU until I proposed we do a show together.>>
"...Frangry had never heard of WFMU until I proposed we do a show together"
I think that just about sums it up. As a big fan, and as a supporter of the station-- in all seriousness- that really, really dissapoints me.

Just to set the record straight, this isn't Andy Cohen from Silkworm is it?
Andy is living in Chicago, and too busy with the fantastic Bottomless Pit (and his normal life) to be involved in this mess.

Those people are dead to me either way. I ain't got time for no prankin'.

I genuinely feel sorry for Frangry and Andy. Must be hard when you are just doing your first official show and you have it coming at you from all directions, doesn't help the confidence. They were just having a dig at SSD who they obviously are better acquainted with than Best Show. I think if Tom knew this would be the result he wouldn't have said anything, seems people don't know when to take his influence as gospel and when to think for themselves and show a bit of feeling. Best thing about WFMU is that it is made by real people who are allowed to be real and also supported by the people. Where is the support now? Shame.
Ps. Jason, your show was very interesting, looking forward to the next installment.
-
Thanks, Pinky!
I am pretty sure Tom is just teasing them. But yes, trust me, it totally takes some time to get into a comfortable groove.
-

Oh, for fuck's sake! I am the best judge and I don't think either fo them are real. Besides, unless the point of their show was to be completely out of control, they did a horrible job. You sound like you think Sarah Palin is a fine choice for president.
-
The subject of this thread would suggest he doesn't want people to be too hard on them. I respected these wishes in so much as I did not prank the show, but I did find it pretty not-likeable independently of Tom's totally justified indignation. I don't actually enjoy listening to, like, 80% of the shows on WFMU. That's why God made horse races, I guess.
-
The sort of implied idea that one should support all or nothing of WFMU is like saying because I give money to PBS for my love of Nova means I can't say an unkind word about the Car Talk cartoon. And that my friend, is crazy talk. There's been plenty enough valid criticism about BQ,J mixed in here with the harsh stuff to balance it all out too, so I can only feel so bad for Andy and Frandy over this.
Especially since they could have stopped all of this (http://erechoveraker.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/kissthering.jpg) way before it ever began.
And in fairness to Julie what with her impending Tom lashing tonight (ooh I hope, sorry Julie - but that'd just be good Best Show!), her call wasn't so much a prank call other than her using a fake name. Because lets face it, that show was getting calls just like that before any FOT decided to lay into it, and we all know a regular Julie call ain't that much less bizarre than any call from Marguerite. Plus, Julie originally was just calling to ask what the show was (or something directly to that effect), which seems a valid question since I've listened to 2.5 episodes of BQ,J now and still have no idea what the point of it is (she has a blog... and he has a daughter?). Unless it's awkwardness, in which case it deserves an award.

Teasing or not teasing, schtick or no schtick: It is, thus far, simply not a good show in my opinion. There is a difference between 'not my thing' and 'terrible'. Though I am sure there are people who like it. (Lots of people like 'Friends' right!)
There are many MANY very talented, dedicated, unique people who would love to do a show on WFMU- or return to its airwaves. Many of them give a lot of their time supporting the station, simply because they love it and understand it. THAT'S the real shame- that someone who has to little to offer on air -and has seemingly little concept of the station at all -is even in this position. If there was much by way of any redeeming quality I'd feel bad too perhaps. But so far I just get snarky, immature egotism with a sense of entitlement smeared on for good measure. Indeed WFMU takes chances, is as close to true free form as there's ever gonna be, and this is indeed a wonderful, sometimes magical thing. But no one is infallible. Taking a chance doesn't mean throwing any idiot off the street on the air and crossing your fingers. ... that's what this amounts too. Or at least sounds like. It was just one poor decision. I guess what I am getting at is yes WFMU embodies realness, indeed- but not mediocrity. It gives very talented people a place to stretch with few boundaries. It's not so much for the people, by the people . It's for the most part by the amazing few, for the amazed few who actually appreciate it. This show, by my standards as a life long listener, is just bad. Am I ashamed to be critical and not a cheerleader just because it is on FMU? Hell no.
-
Is it time to bash Bob Brainen again?
I kid.
-
I cannot join the SU,W! pile-on, as I have not listened to it. However, I have listened to the inaugural episode of The Acousmatic Theater Hour and I would like to initiate a pile-on for that ... No, no no.
Cool show, Mr. Grote. It was especially great to hear those Beckett pieces. I listened to his BBC radio plays in college, and it delights me now as it did then to imagine families in '50s/'60s Britain spinning their radio dials and stumbling onto something so bizarre and challenging. It also makes me doubly grateful that there are still outlets like WFMU for broadcasts weird, wonderful, and unexpected.
-
Thanks, Curt. We have two specific target audiences: the first one is a lonely trucker driving over the Pulaski Skyway who comes upon the show by accident and has his life changed forever, and the second one is some aliens thousands of light-years away in the Andromeda Galaxy who decide to invade earth upon first hearing the show.
-
While I agree that we should "support" WFMU and its diverse output, that doesn't mean we have to like everything that comes on air.
At least Tom and Jon make an effort, have a clue about what they're going to do -- they must prepare scripts, storylines and all that... It requires PLANNING and THOUGHT and genuine intellect. It's not like Tom gets in front of the microphone and thinks to himself "golly it's neato to be on the radio! and with my natural wit and humor I don't need to prepare anything!"
He and Jon make a real effort and it shows. That, I think, is what makes us all come back week after week... Not to mention spend time here. ;-)
Even SSD, the purported home of utter unpreparedness, they put in some sort of effort -- like chewing gum, ordering Caesars salad and coconut chicken on the air... At least that's funny. Being snooty isn't.
Now that I saw a picture of that Frangry, I think I can tell why she is might be "popular" on the blogowhatzit... She has a perfect face for the internet, but her voice is not made for radio, if you get my drift.
I gotta get off this topic. I can't let myself be known as a rabble rouser. I guess I'll just not listen to that Shut up show and let that speak
-
her call wasn't so much a prank call other than her using a fake name.
Of course all the information she has provided on TBS is true.
-

sorry, sarah...i should have known better that you werent talking about the worst part of the uncle.
-
Why doesn't Petey have a damn show?
No doubt. He is a hell of a lot more creative than a number of the show producers out there.
-
What show producers out there? On FMU?
I like how some of the shows aren't so "polished"
-
how long is the delay at FMU? no particular reason why I'm asking, just curious.
-
I listened to last Friday's show. I don't think it's a bad show at all. I get all the personal criticism Frangry (aka Kelly Jones Jr.) is getting, and I don't disagree with most of it (she deserves to be mocked for the anti-tv pro-NES comments) but I still find her entertaining. The show is a mess but I think it's fun. Also Julie's prank calls were hysterically funny. I encourage her to continue this terrible behavior.
-
Frangry (aka Kelly Jones Jr.)
How dare you.

Which shut up weirdos feature Julie pranks? I might actually listen to those.

There were some good calls during last week's show. Just listen to the whole thing. I think it's better if the suspense is building.
-
Not even Julie and an on the air f'ing-word could save the show tonight.
I do like Andy a lot more though, Frangry just doesn't seem like she wants to be there or something, or is really into it at all.
-
One important thing for us all to keep in mind: if the Shut Up Weirdo hosts give out the phone number for The Best Show at any point during their broadcast, we must report them immediately.
-
Do Ondy and Frongry hate each other already?
-
I think they're doing fine. Sure, it's not Best Show (or Bronwyn either for that matter), but they've got their own thing going on.

Wow! Their show is turning into a really great show! Amazing.

I had another curious listen; it's honestly not a bad show but Frangry's blog/youth/club/lifestyle references are nauseating. They had some decent callers. It'd be nice if they'd play ball with the Best Show a bit but hey, whatever.

Which callers did you like best, Gibby?
-
that show is dogshit. the only good callers were goofing on them and they didn't even pick up on it.

Frangy and I are BFF now. She's so cool, just like me!

Frangy's a very lucky girl, Julie.

-
Just listened to the archive of the inaugural episode of "shut up, weirdo" (against my better judgment) and I have to say that a) julie definitely deserved to be banned from the best show and b) she was probably the best part of that first episode. Take that for what it's worth.
-
for what it's worth.
What a field-day for the heat ...
-
Which callers did you like best, Gibby?
This is off the top of my head, but I liked the military guy who called first.
-
how long is the delay at FMU? no particular reason why I'm asking, just curious.
I think on SSD once they discussed it and it was 14 seconds.
I am listening to this show in 5 minute increments all weekend to hear any FOT references but it...is...so..hard..to get through.
-
FOTsters -
I'm going to reiterate something, and I hope everybody takes it to heart.
It took a full two years of doing The Best Show before I stopped getting a regular flood of hate mail. Up to that point, most emails were some variant of 'you suck', 'play some music' or 'you're not funny'.
They've done two shows now. Yeah, maybe they're not where they should be yet. I'm sure they know the shortcomings of their show and the areas that they hope to improve upon. After doing The Best Show for eight years now, I come away from every show knowing what I did wrong and could've done better.
So I am going to ask everybody to ease up on them. My teasing has apparently sparked something that has grown beyond what it should've, and I regret that.
I don't hate Andy and Frangry and I don't bear them any ill will. I was just teasing them the way I have teased other shows throughout my time on the station. And that's all it was meant to be.
So please don't post nasty comments on their blogs or call their show with the intent to ruin it. Let them do what they do. If you like it, then listen. If you don't, then let it stop there.
Everybody at WFMU is doing a show for free, and doing a call-in show is its own unique high wire act, so they don't deserve any added grief or stress.
You guys are all good people, and I know you're going to do the right thing in this matter. I appreciate it.
Thanks!
Tom.
-
Well said. So modest. And quite civilized.
Frankly though, I couldn't stand that attempt at a show before I ever heard you comment about them. My personal opinion has nothing to do with you or your show. Yes, 2 or 3 shows is enough to know if there's much potential. I for one certainly won't be listening further, despite the can't -look- away- from- an -accident like quality that, to me, seems to be its only compelling feature.
touche!
-
Can't we all just get along.
-
Many of the shows on WFMU are unlistenable, so I don't see why people are so up in arms about one particular show rather than another.
-
Tom,
I call that show because I think it's the best way to spend the most tedious hour of the week. I may be irritating, but I am not pranking them. They said they want people to drink when they call, so that's what I do. You see! If anyone is responsible for my making irritating phone calls to Shut Up, Weirdo, then Andy and Frangy, who by the way says she likes me to call, are responsible. I hope you can tell the difference between enthusiastic appreciation and prank calls. I am just trying to fit in somewhere.
-
I think Andy and Frangry may regret the cessation of hostilities: most of the callers last week were pranksters, and their calls were the most entertaining. I'll be curious to see what happens without them this Friday.
