Lance Hahn of J Church died five years ago today. J Church is one of my favorite bands of all-time.
For those not familiar, J Church's sound was very much on the higher end of 90s pop-punk and wasn't afraid to steer away from that formula into a broader range. In fact, anytime I listen to One Mississippi I think it's the best pre-Green REM album ever made.
On top of it, Lance was one of the most literate songwriters in punk in the 90s. Jawbreaker and the DC emo bands rightly get a lot of acclaim for taking punk and hardcore into a serious direction in terms of songwriting and musicianship. But, damn it, J Church might be the best of the lot and people sleep on them.
Thanks for all the songs, dude!
