Tom, whaddya think of them as Dylan's backing band on the 1966 tour and the Basement Tapes?  Just out of curiosity.

I never thought they were as rocking as everybody did backing Dylan and the Basement Tapes were never interesting to me. Again, I've tried. Listened to it over and over - it never stuck.

Tom.

I think Steely Dan is the quintessential humorless band.

Yet Steely Dan's humorlessness makes me laugh. Did you ever see the "Classic Albums" about Aja? It's practically a Christopher Guest movie. Also, come on, "Trampled Under Foot" is one of the funniest songs ever.

As much as I love those Classic Album programs I just can't bring myself to watch that one. Deeply rooted is my hatred of Steely Dan.

"Hot Dog" is another fun Led Zeppelin song.

There's no room for fun in music, guys. This is serious business.
I thought it was funny that Tom used John Fogerty (a man notorious for his lack of a sense of humor) and CCR as an example of "Fun" music.

Please elaborate, because everything I've ever heard of Fogarty is the opposite.
I looked up " Tom Fogerty and deathbed" and this was the first thing that popped up.
http://popdose.com/when-good-albums-happen-to-bad-people-john-fogerty-centerfield/

"John Fogerty is on very many levels the American version of Robbie Robertson. Or maybe Robertson is the Canadian Fogerty. Either way, they have quite a lot of things in common: both were the lead songwriters for Hall of Fame bands from the late ’60s and early ’70s known for merging rock and roll to other forms of “American” music. Both are underrated guitarists. After their bands broke up, both spent long periods of time in the ’70s and ’80s away from the studio before returning with critically acclaimed solo albums. And, both are well known as jerks who may have manipulated their band’s contracts for their own financial benefit, held lifelong grudges against their bandmates, and have put out a stunning lack of good music in the last 35 years, likely in part due to their inability to get over themselves and their own legacies."

I don't agree with "stunning lack of good music in the last 35 years" (The Old Man Lives Down the Road came out 27 years ago.)
At the height of the fuzztoned psychedelic era The Band had a tuba on their album. If you can't see the sense of humor in that....etc.

Tom (if you're reading this), I'm really not trying to get you to change your musical taste.  It's obviously the product of a huge amount of close listening and you gotta respect that.  I just don't think your arguments for it are that strong.  For instance, it seems strange to me to accuse The Band of being the group that sucked the fun out of music when they were preceded by much better-selling laff factories like Simon and Garfunkel, the Moody Blues, and the Doors.  On the other hand, the Band rant was about as funny as any stream of vicious invective against something I value could be, so it's all good.

I have absolutely no thoughts on The Band. I don't think I've heard anything past The Weight. I'm largely basing this on that the people I know who love The Band are usually annoying.

But CCR/Fogerty is fun. The dude wrote Centerfield! All of the big CCR singles are super fun and rocking.

I wake up a lot of days thinking Queen is the best band of all-time. They could NOT be more fun. Case in point: On the face of it, Somebody to Love's a pretty heartbreaking pop song. But then one of the versus Freddie starts singing "I'm allright" with the rest of the band going "He's allright". That's such a wink at the audience of how they didn't take themselves seriously at all. Bohemian Rhapsody is the silliest song ever. Bicycle Race! Big Bottomed Girls (especially the part where they reference Bicycle Race, which is the other side of the single)! That bizarre/hilarious video for I Want to Break Free!

There's also some story I read in one music mag pushing the Queen reunion shows. There's a story in there about how insane their parties were. I don't condone drug usage but they had midgets walking around with trays lined with cocaine strapped to their heads. THAT'S hilarious.

Another awesome Queen story: The members of Fugazi are obsessed with Queen. There's this old zine I loved called Go Metric and they interview Guy about Queen's influence on their career. Ian saw Queen live in the 70s and that's one of the reasons why he became a musician.

Uh, am I the only one who thinks that just sounds like obnoxious pampered-rock-star self-indulgence?

I have to check that out, never heard of the 'Classic Album' programs.

I like Steely Dan, but yeah, none of their songs are loads of laughs. All of them about drugs and death and pornography and breakups and the end of the world. 'Monkey in Your Soul' is brief and light-hearted, but maybe if I listen to it closer it's actually about genocide. Steely Dan are like that.

OK yeah 'Monkey In Your Soul' is about how he's miserable, too. Still...brief and musically it's kind of upbeat.

I can hear a lot of Queen influence in the early Minor Threat stuff.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

I think Steely Dan is the quintessential humorless band.

No, I think that honor belongs to King Crimson. I defy anyone to find a Crimson song that could be construed as "fun" or "humorous."
Nobody ever lends money to a man with a sense of humor.

Interestingly, Steely Dan fans would probably disagree with you.  They'd say that Steely Dan has more humorous songs in their catalog than Led Zeppelin.

You have to remember though that Steely Dan humor is that dry, middle-aged, smirking humor.
