Can we use this thread to recommend stuff on Netflix Instant?
I just watched Kevin Nealon's stand-up hour and it was extremely funny. Something's wrong with all the dolts giving it one-star ratings on the site.

Botany Of Desire was pretty interesting.
-
I have been watching some of the oldest films available on Netflix for the last month or so. Unlike Tom, I love that "old stuff", and feel like it absolutely speaks to me. Here's what I have seen since I started this:
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari 1919
Nosferatu: The Gothic Industrial Mix 1922
The Battleship Potemkin 1925
Man with the Movie Camera 1929
Broken Blossoms 1918
The Phantom of the Opera 1925
Duck Soup 1933
Scarface 1932
The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1923
My Man Godfrey 1936
Steamboat Bill Jr 1928
Dracula 1931
Currently about halfway through Stagecoach. I won't bore you with capsules (that's for my blog readers,) but if anyone wants any info, more than willing to share.

The question is a bit too open-ended to answer with any confidence for someone whose taste I know nothing about. I could tell you that Billy Wilder's magisterially sleazy Kiss Me Stupid (over which I traded a few jabs with Auntie Christina a while back) is available, as is Cutter's Way (a good-almost-great 80's neo-noir recently referenced vis-a-vis Orson Welles), but what do the two really have in common except that (1) I like 'em, and (2) there's no reason to expect that any other FOT would?
I can say with confidence, though, that as an FOT my greatest Netflix streaming bargain over the last few months has been the full 89-episode run of The Larry Sanders Show, which I had not seen prior to Garry Shandling's WTF interview. If anyone else here hasn't seen it and didn't know it was there: Go Watchum.
PS: Thanks, DFK, for that list. I like that The Old Stuff too and will be using your post as a guide.

I've enjoyed the following
Carlos miniseries
Harmony and Me
Fubar II (actually haven't watched yet, but as a fan of the first one, I'm looking forward to it)
Jesus's Son
Damages season 1 and 2
Saxondale series 1 and 2
Irreversible (just FINALLY got the guts to watch this and thought it was great)
Fish Tank
Uncle Kent
Down Terrace
Marwencol
American The Bill Hicks Story
Thumbs Up!
The Girl Who Played With Fire (diminishing returns on each film in the trilogy)
Mesrine pts 1 and 2
House of The Devil
Comedy Central Presents John Mulaney
Alexander The Last
Beautiful Losers
Exit Through The Gift Shop
Vice Guide To Travel
Restrepo
Bronson
Valhalla Rising
Milton Glaser: Inform and Delight
Party Down seasons 1 and 2
Sin Nombre
-
Mr Warmth
30 Rock
The Benson Interruption
We Jam Econo
Paul Mooney: Know Your History
Louie
Valley Girl
The Snake

The question is a bit too open-ended to answer with any confidence for someone whose taste I know nothing about.
I was thinking more like "Hey, I just watched this, and it was pretty good!" kind of thread, which I guess I didn't make clear.
I'm on season 4 of Larry Sanders and I'm really enjoying it. I watched for the first time Ken Burns' The War and The Civil War series recently and quite liked them. I can also recommend the Michael Apted's Up Series, a lot of which is on instant, but not all.

I really liked Harmony and Me. I am waiting for Instant to have it's resurgence because it has either downsized a bit or not grown the way I thought it would.
-
Mystery Science Theater 3000 - While not every episode is available (they're rotated due to licensing), they have quite a few from my favorite era ~1992-93.
If you haven't seen the following episodes already, I highly recommend making time to do so.
- The Giant Gila Monster (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Mystery_Science_Theater_3000_The_Giant_Gila_Monster/70089007) - A classic--the old man trying sody pop, the sound of the jalopy, the apologetic Gila Monster--this is one I still quote lines from.
- The Beatniks (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Mystery_Science_Theater_3000_The_Beatniks/70130372) - The characters, and their motivations, in this one are pretty funny on their own. Plus, you'll find yourself singing the song from it later.
- Warrior of the Lost World (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Mystery_Science_Theater_3000_Warrior_of_the_Lost_World/70128045) - The scene with MEGAWEAPON makes this early-80's B-movie worthwhile.
-
I'm not sure if The Battle of Algiers is still available streaming, but it was last year and it is now one of my favorite films of all time.
I have also been watching Futurama and enjoying it immensely. Also Louie and 30 Rock.
-
We just started watching Ramsay's Best Restaurant. Great if you dig cooking shows where its not all about telling someone how much they stink.

I got a very long, desperate form email from the ceo of netflix this morning. Haven't bothered to read it yet, though. They are reeling a bit.
-
I would just write, "Oops."
Somebody tell me when Parks & Rec Season 3 is up for streaming. Thanks.
-
Cutter's Way (a good-almost-great 80's neo-noir recently referenced vis-a-vis Orson Welles)
Thank you for making me feel less crazy. (I made the reference!)
I rewatch a lot of MST3K and Kids in the Hall on Netflix.
Some other favorites include
- 35 Shots of Rum
- Cold Weather
- Panic in Needle Park
- The Wayward Cloud
- Winchester 73
- Yellow Sky
-
Bill Cunningham New York
-
I think Friday Night Lights may still be there.
But yeah, Louie.
-
I love all of these:
Detour
Louie
Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story
Saxondale
Archer
Frontline episodes
Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer
Carlos
The Killing
Party Down
The Rockford Files
-
Documentaries are definitely a strong point in the Instant Play section.
a lot of good ones have been named, but I'll specifically point out to view
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Restrepo
Food inc
and Street Fight, about the mayoral campaign between Sharpe James & Corey Booker
Tv Series
Damages
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
Friday Night Lights
-
The Parking Lot Movie
Comedians of Comedy: The Movie
Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion
Louis CK: Chewed Up
Last Train Home
Twin Peaks

SInce when is Breaking Bad on Instant? The Nilsson documentary is worth watching(especially for this one Mickey Dolenz interview where he freaks out.)
-
Breaking Bad appeared a couple of weeks back.
I can recommend Stagecoach, and I usually can't watch John Wayne. I am re-watching Bride of Frankenstein this weekend, for maybe the 5th time.
-
I've found Jiminy Glick at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Glick_Doesn_t_Do_Red_Carpet_Jiminy_Glick_at_the_Independent_Spirit_Awards/70097851) to be an entertaining way to spend 30 minutes. Glick makes fun of Netflix and interviews Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Maria Bello, Dennis Hopper, Steve Buscemi, and Ed Begley Jr.

Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen
Top comic Byron Allen hosts this riotous combination of chat show, pointed social commentary and live stand-up, which features a rotating panel of the hottest comedians riffing without restraint on the news of the day and their personal pet peeves.
-
Speaking of Byron Allen, where are Skip Stephenson and Sarah Purcell these days?
-
Ah shit. Skip Stephenson's dead. Sorry I asked.
-
Ah shit. Skip Stephenson's dead. Sorry I asked.
and even in death...
"Valhalla Rising" was almost as good as "Howard the Duck"
"Adventures in Power" highly recommended even though Michael McKean is in the hate pit and Rush is frowned apparently frowned upon by the Cynics (but not Ted Leo).

I cannot vouch for the veracity of these, but if Ibsen's is true (#7 in this list), it is the best last utterance ever:

Sorry, I digress from the topic.

Nardwuar recently interviewed that Adventures with Power guy. Sounded like good fun.

I have gotten hooked on Breaking Bad on Netflix instant Season 1-3, Season 4 can be found on sidereel.com
-
I watched Primary Colors (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Primary_Colors/8179585?trkid=2361637) the other day and really enjoyed it. Liked it a lot more than Ides of March (in theatres now). Syriana (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Syriana/70018715?trkid=2361637) is also on netflix. Can't remember enjoying any other political thriller as much as I did this one.
Feel free to recommend your favorite political features and documentaries.
-
I enjoyed the documentary Following Sean. It's mostly about the filmmaker's experience in, and wariness of, the Haight-Ashbury scene in the late 60s, but also just an interesting portrait of a family.
-
I'm using this thread to also recommend titles on Criterion's Hulu Plus channel. At least one month-long, $8 binge would seem reasonable:
Robert Bresson's riveting masterpieces A Man Escaped and L'Argent
The Letter Never Sent, a Soviet adventure film from the makers of Cranes Are Flying, with outstanding cinematography (including an amazing forest fire sequence).
Ernst Lubitsch's great, extremely entertaining To Be or Not To Be.
Elaine May's Mikey & Nicky, w/ Cassavetes & Peter Falk
Fassbinder's tongue-in-cheek sci-fi miniseries World on a Wire
An absolute treasure trove of Japanese classics from most of the masters (Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Imamura, Oshima, Naruse, etc.)
All your fave Bergman laffers.
Death Shadows – I don’t know that this is a good movie, but it’s certainly campy and strange. The main plot as described on the site, about a trio of mute convicts forced to become samurai police, is completely dispensed with after half an hour, and instead shapes up as a duel between a member of the trio’s daughter and her vampy female nemesis. Features occasional interpretive dance interludes backed by disco lights, a character whose signature weapon is a long ribbon twirler, and one scruffy actor who literally chews the scenery.

Thanks for the heads up! Watching this tomorrow.

See, why do they bury the good stuff when it becomes available? How did you become aware of this? I comb the new releases every few days.
Also, thanks, Chris L. I just got hulu plus and and have flipping aimlessly through the hundreds of criterion movies.

Just dumb luck. I searched for Steve Coogan to see if any of his series were available to watch instantly (they aren't) and this popped up.

Search harder! Saxondale is available. It's probably my favorite Steve Coogan TV show.

I ususally check instantwatcher.com every so often. It's also handy for seeing what is about to become unavailable.

You're right - I do have that in my queue. I'd forgotten in my disappointment that I'm Alan Partridge isn't available. But I do plan on checking it out.

And I just focused mainly on things they haven't released on disc yet. Agree that it can be a little overwhelming.
They also added Eating Raoul yesterday; a movie I've heard much about but still never seen.
-
Just started watching Storage Wars.
YEP!
-
If you have a spare 5 und a half hours to spend on a really well done, based-on-real-life, TV mini-series about a Venezuelan born terrorist, with a cool 80s post-punk/new-wave soundtrack, spend it on a Carlos marathon like I did today.
-

I keep watching it. I wish I got anything out of it. It's like these 8 people are the only people in the entire universe, and all they do is brag about how they beat somebody out of a deal, or bitch about how somebody else beat them out of a deal.
Too much like wrestling.

Great, now I want to see it.

The Year My Voice Breaking, long unavailable in the US, is on Netflix streaming. It's an Australian movie about adolescence, first love, stuff like that, but it's tonally miles away from corresponding US fare. It's funny and heartbreaking and I can't wait to watch it again for the first time in years. Noah Taylor's the only actor I remember from it. It was followed by a second (also excellent) movie called Flirting that got a little more attention here thanks probably largely to Nicole Kidman having a small part. Thandie Newton's also in it and, while you can't watch it on streaming, DVD copies can usually be had fairly cheaply.

I saw Flirting in college. Need to check out the first one.

Just watched Antichrist :(
-
Also just noticed that someone rating the film on Netflix gave it only 1 star because the title was misleading :(
-
Just saw, and loved "Adam's Apples", a very dark comedy take on the Book of Job. Hope it's available streaming, if not, it's worth pulling the DVD.

I can't recommend Saxondale enough. It's a good one.

Actual title is The Year My Voice Broke and both film are well worth your time.

Are Eating Raoul and My Dinner with Andre sequels? Like Benny and Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
-
Has anyone checked out Borgia on Netflix? Not The Borgias, starring Jeremy Irons, but Borgia, starring John Doman (Rawls from the Wire) and from Tom Fontana (producer of Oz and Homicide).

I thought What's Eating Gilbert Grape? had it's own sequels called Something is still Eating Gilbert Grape and What's Eating Gilbert Grape 3: Keep on Eating!

It really is. I worked for a small paper for a year and even that was insane with deadlines and a day to day sense of insecurity. I couldn't imagine working there now-a-days. On the other hand, David Carr is great. I love the scene when he fusses at those Vice goons.

I've heard great things about this and can't wait to watch it.
I'm a reporter. I have a teleplay mapped out about the insanity that is this career.

I made a separate thread for it but should add it here. The Rockafire Explosion.
Please all watch so we can have some discussion of it on said thread.
-
I haven't watched it yet except for the excellent opening titles, but there is a new documentary about pinball available for streaming called Special When Lit. Again, I can't claim to know the quality.
-
Special When Lit is pretty good. It's no King of Kong because it doesn't have much of a story but it is a good doc.
-
jus added the rockafire ex plosion. looks cool. cool thought follow up soon. have yas all seen this one Mit Hamine Fargo 2 (http://vimeo.com/30003892) sum undergound shiz (icarly ref)

Fans of Herzog's Bad Lieutenant should check out Johnny To's MAD DETECTIVE. "Mad" is putting it mildly. Within the first five minutes of the movie, the titular detective has himself zipped in a suitcase and thrown down a flight of stairs, and slices his own ear off before presenting it to a retiring supervisor. His preternatural gift is being able to solve crimes by seeing the "true" personalities of his suspects, which are played by different actors that only he and the audience can see. This all culminates in a clever homage to Lady of Shanghai. The subtitles on Netflix are rife with errors, but nothing too distracting.
-
I just watched Special When Lit last night. As orangewhip said there isn't much of a narrative, but it's nice to look at and there are a number of poignant moments.
Gave me the itch to get back to the Silver Ball Museum stat.
-
I, too, just finished Special When Lit. I agree with everyone above that the lack of narrative really makes it feel scattershot and not very coherent. I would have preferred a more in depth look at pinball creation and why the hell it was banned.
Between that and the Rock-A Fire Explosion doc, I've found that I am really fascinated by people with singular obsessions about super niche things. I admire them for their dedication and their pure love for something. I feel sad because it seems to come to control these people.
-
Mit Hamine Fargo 2 (http://vimeo.com/30003892) KING OF KONG!!!... can sumone please watch my entire movie before commenting about how much mit hamine sucks. its rude and id no rant

I agree re: the fascination w/ singular obsessions. It's probably b/c I feel stretched pretty thin over many different things, and to be so consumed in something you only wanted to (and only did) work on that sounds strangely appealing. Of course it has some pretty severe downsides. I will check out these films.
-
I searched for Steve Coogan to see if any of his series were available to watch instantly (they aren't)
Search harder! Saxondale is available. It's probably my favorite Steve Coogan TV show.
I can't recommend Saxondale enough. It's a good one.
Thirded. I just started this one last week. I wish they'd have 'I'm Alan Partridge' on there, though.
-
IM ALEN PARTRIDGE IZ ON YOUTUBE!! FULL EPS SEASON 2 in one vid file :'( get to
-
wow, coming back to the board for the first time in awhile is definitely helping me to understand the mit hamine hate....
Watched Pontypool the other night. I definitely enjoyed it, although it's more of a suspense thing than a horror thing. It reminds me a lot of a Warren Ellis story adapted into a Warren Oates movie.
There's also this series called Nightmare Next Door or something that's just about the most insane thing I've ever seen. Imagine Unsolved Mysteries being made by the producers of Ancient Aliens and you've got a rough idea...
oh, and that Herzog movie about the caves is in now...
-
Been looking forward to Cave Of Forgotten Dreams forever. Was in Missouri when it played here in L.A. When I got back it was gone. So I watched it last night and was completely underwhelmed.

I love when I am in a record store and I come across a sealed copy of a record from the 60s then I come home and open it and the cover is still glossy, the paper is white and unworn and the vinyl is in pristine condition. Cave of Forgotten Dreams takes this fascination to the extreme.
-
now, would the 3-D have made it better?

I agree, and that wasn't lost on me, but I expected it to be more visually stunning.

I don't know if anyone has made this suggestion on this thread (it's gotten pretty long, and I didn't feel like searching all the way through), but I watched "Punching the Clown" over the weekend, and really liked it.
Yes, it is a sort of "mockumentary" type thing, which has been a bit overdone (just a bit, right?), but give it a shot if you haven't seen it. There's some good laughs in there. And heart and stuff.

I highly recommend Machete Maidens Unleashed! It's a documentary about the exploitation films made in the Philippines in the 60s/70s/80s with a heavy emphasis on the Roger Corman movies. Lots of great interviews with a ton of the people who were there (Pam Grier, Roger Corman, Sid Haig, Joe Dante) and those who admire them (John Landis, Danny Peary).
An obvious missing interview is with Johnathan Demme. Of the big directors to come out of the Corman machine, he seems to be the one who went to the Philippines and made an exploitation film there. But sadly, he must have declined to talk.
NB: There are a ton of boobs and fake gore in this movie, as any good documenatry about exploitation movies would have.

in puppet news, Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas is now on Netflix for anyone who enjoys weeping at puppets performing "The Gift of the Magi" for the holidays.
-
I don't have Netflix, but I've been told that the terrific TV show Terriers is now available on Netflix Instant.
-
I don't have Netflix, but I've been told that the terrific TV show Terriers is now available on Netflix Instant.
This is indeed a terrific show. It's a crime that it wasn't renewed for a second season.
-
I'll third the Terriers recommendation.
It was a show that didn't have the big pulpy hook to market it like Justified or Sons of Anarchy.
-
SOA might be pulpy garbage, but I don't think there's a lot of pulp in Justified. I mean, I don't hatemyelf for watching Justified, or think it's sensationalistic. It's more of a "ooh boy, Jeremy Davies as a redneck is awesome!" I'm betting the bulk of that audience -and I don't know how well it does- consists of Deadwood holdovers and people in love with Timothy Olyphant. It's one of my favorite shows on TV, but I'm surprised it's lasted this long.
For Terriers, I blame the terrible marketing. There were billboards EVERYWHERE in LA when it came out, but I still thought it was a show about Dogs until the week before it was cancelled.
Also, I've never been a giant Donal Logue fan. He was great in this, it's the sort of role that's perfect for him, but I would've been 75% likelier to watch the show if I wasn't familiar with most of his other work. But yeah, watch it because it's awesome.
-
Please don't misunderstand me. I love Justified, too, and do think it's much better than SOA. I don't use the term pulp with the aim of derision.
But the source of Justified is Elmore Leonard, one of the best pulp crime writers of the past 20 years.
My point was that Terriers didn't have the one sentence hook like SOA or Justified.
SOA: Modern day biker gang attempt to keep their criminal enterprise going.
Justified: US Marshall who is quick on the trigger has to go back to his hometown and deal with crime.
Terriers: Two dudes investigate crimes. Not exactly a big hook.
But yeah, Terriers was great.
-
I thought it was a reality show about dogs until just now. Seriously.
-

If you're interested and didn't know, Punching the Clown star Henry Phillips was on WTF last week.
-
Ken Kesey's Magic Trip is up there now. Been looking forward to watching that, but was too chicken to spend money at the thee-ate-er.
I also watched part one of AND THIS IS FREE. The thing about Maxwell St. If you are a fan of rough'n'tumble blues and gospel, this is a must-see. If discussions about whether or not a shop is going to sell kosher goods is up your alley stick around for part 2.

a whole boatload of stuff made available today, including Spaced and the 2nd season of The League, which I can't remember if it was already on there or not.
checking instantwatcher is fun, but it's shocking to see the garbage/gems ratio as it arrives.

I don't have Netflix, but I've been told that the terrific TV show Terriers is now available on Netflix Instant.
You didn't hear it from me, but using a US address and paypal (as well as a VPN - which does cost between 8 and 11 dollars a month), you too can get Netflix streaming.
It works very well.
-
Funnily enough I just got hooked up with a VPN by a friend, and so now my big project is trying to get my media center (which has support for apps for Netflix, Hulu etc) to use that VPN so I can do the whole streaming thing to my whole entertainment system and not just my computer.

I third it! I watched it yesterday and it just killed me.
Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, Harmony and Me is great too. These indie comedies are some of the funniest things goin. It also features a young Nick Offerman. Watch it damnit!
Best line in Punching The Clown: "I wanted to apologize so I sent her a singing telegram..and she fucked the singing telegram guy."

My favorite scene is probably the Batman segment. Those kids behaving like monsters, the dudes in the car laughing at him...so low, yet so funny.
Also, "Stupid Joe".
-
I second Harmony And Me. I've actually watched it a couple times.

the art of the steal

-
C.H.U.D. has recently become available to stream. Just in time for the holidays, I guess.
-
Viva Riva! is a pretty good b-movie crime film that is notable for having been made in the Congo by a Congolese director.
-
Battlestar Galactica, Spider-Man '67, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, IT Crowd
-
If you're a Tom Hardy/Violent British Gangster stuff The Take is pretty enjoyable. I guess it's a short mini-series? The main character is maybe the most despicable main characters I've ever seen and the story spans a shitload of time in four episodes so as far as storytelling goes it's a little lacking. But I liked it enough to order the second disc (eps 3 and 4 are disc only).

Timecrimes (2007: Spain)
After accidentally traveling to the past, Héctor (Karra Elejalde) meets himself and triggers a series of mysterious events that lead to a shocking crime. The gripping time-travel story -- at once deeply intricate and easy to follow -- also stars Candela Fernández. Oscar-nominated short-film director Nacho Vigalondo makes his feature debut with this finely crafted sci-fi thriller.
This is a great little no-budget, small cast, mind effer that, if you buy the 'accidentally travelling in time' premise, then you're in for a treat.
Streaming.

That's a good movie group, watching a low-budget foreign language flick. Good scifi/horror movies usually work better w/o big budgets and stars.

We've been watching a movie together, Wednesday nights, probably 40-45 times a year, for going on 20 years. Lots of fun.

I'm only recently getting into Mike Leigh stuff but this film blew me away. It's nearly three hours so it is a time commitment. But this look at Gilbert and Sullivan is just superbly acted and directed.

Who here has been brave enough to watch Lilyhammer?

This is that show where Little Steven plays a Daytime Vampire in Sweden, right? His toupee is over a thousand years old!

I watched it. It's not good. Little Steven is supposed to be charming in a Tony Soprano anti-hero kind of way but his character just comes across like a horrendous human being.
-
It has the Breitbart.com stamp of approval, so I'll give it a shot.
But more than that, “Lilyhammer” is an absolute breath of politically incorrect air. As we sit here and watch the hapless and hopeless Republican party constantly outsmarted by the media and Barack Obama as our liberties are stripped away, I promise you that “Lilyhammer” will help to get you through the night.
-
I saw a bus-stop sign for it and I thought, "Oh yeah, that."
-
I love the thought process that went into to crafting Lilyhammer.
"Hey! You know Little Steven? The non-actor from the E-Street Band who played Silvio Dante in the Sopranos and was only - at most - halfway successful being that show's cringe-worthy comic relief? Well, we'd like to expand that character into a full show. And set it in Norway or something."

I watched TINY FURNITURE last night. While wonderfully shot, it's been a while since I have seen a movie where I wanted to strike every single character. (Well, there is one character who walks away from the main character's BS so she is exempt from the punching but the rest...ew boy.) I could not relate to anything in this film.

I think that most of the postgrad, mid-to-late-twenties crowd and post-art school crowd can relate to those kind of people.

For the record, I graduated with an art degree. I can relate to post-grad art students just fine. However the characters in this film had such thin affectations disguised as character traits I just couldn't like them or root for them in any way. Not even to fail. I just didn't care.
I can see the appeal of the film and I am not trying to take your enjoyment of it away from you. But it annoyed me because I KNOW that there are many people (young and old) like them. And I don't like them.

I love how the trailer for Girls, Lena Dunham's new HBO Judd Apatow-produced comedy, literally features the same exact actors retreading the same tired themes from Tiny Furniture.

God, I'm so spoiled. I started to watch this on Netflix last night, but I couldn't get past the crappy letterbox (not anamorphic) presentation that they have streaming, so I turned it off after just a couple of minutes. I did finally watch The Producers though.

Yeah, I agree that was terrible and did give me pause. But I was stuck with it. I think I'm going to try and snag the blu-ray from criterion next time there's some sale on.

I don't have Netflix, but I've been told that the terrific TV show Terriers is now available on Netflix Instant.
I watched this whole season on your recommendation and certainly fell in love with it. Great show, I wish they made more. I just found out that the main guy in Terriers was the same guy who played Jimmy the cabdriver on MTV in the '90s!
jimmy mcbride on the presidents of the USA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzQBvhLzxlI#)
I guess he roadied for the Lemonheads too. Weird!

Snuff Box
2006 NR 1 Season
Brit Matt Berry and Yank Rich Fulcher play a hangman and his assistant, respectively, in this exceedingly dark BBC comedy series. With much of the action taking place at "a gentleman's club for hangmen," the lads run into awkward situations aplenty.

Everything about Tiny Furniture sounds like something that I would hate, but it worked for me, for some reason. I agree that almost every single character was punchable (especially the men in it!) but despite that, it somehow charmed me. I agree with Paul de P. that it's a young person's film, and maybe I was forgiving it quite a bit on that basis. The gender dynamics were seriously depressing - is this what 20-something women put up with these days?
I think that the main thing that I liked about it was the specificity of the world it was portraying. I found the central mother/daughter relationship honest, convincing (I guess that's Dunham's real mom) and also touching.
-
I finally watched Broadway Danny Rose last night. I've been on a big Woody Allen kick lately--re-watching stuff I've already seen and catching up on the ones I haven't. I can't believe I had put off seeing this one for so long. It's easily in my top 10 Woody movies.

I'm 19 and I completely hated this film. I know far too many people like this. Untalented liberal arts majors that expect the world to hand them a crown for doing absolutely nothing. They all need a healthy dose of Rollins Band's Do it.
Incidentally, I despised "The Future" for the exact same reasons.
-
I was thrilled to see Paul Schrader praise TINY FURNITURE, particularly its visual pleasures, in one of the Criterion supplements. This guy gets it.
-
I really liked "The Future".
-
Just a couple days ago I noticed that Pawn Stars is on the Netflix streaming, and already have watched the first 10 episodes. They're like Cheez Doodles, completely pointless and free of nutrition but once you have one you end up eating the whole bag.

Four Lions is currently available on NI, so if you haven't seen it, now's the time.

Still mainlining the show. It's like Antiques Roadshow For Dummies, but I can't stop watching. Help!

I am on a similar streak with Archer.
-
Recently watched and liked 'Bunny and The Bull'. It features the Boosh guys (and was directed by Paul King) and I liked the mix of animation and live action stuff. I tend to find the uptight guy with out-of-control friend stories relatable, having been a lifelong uptight guy with a series of out-of-control friends (don't have one at the moment though, alas).

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I hope to see more of the lead in future films.

The Greg The Bunny IFC movie parody series is streaming now. It's much funnier and smarter than you would expect.
-
Senna is on streaming and it's fantastic. I know nothing about Formula One racing but this was pretty powerful.
-
I watched the first episode of Downton Abbey last night and I really liked it.
My wife hated it. Shouldn't it be the reverse?
-
I am on a similar streak with Archer.
God, Archer is the best.
-
I found "Bill Cunningham New York", a doc about the New York Times fashion photographer, surprisingly moving. It's on Instant.
-
I second that reco, Jason.
-
Have any of you ever seen the movie Bandwagon? I love it, and now it's streaming on Netflix. I don't know ANYONE except my wife who has seen this movie, and I'm curious what other people think.

I watched the pilot for Glee. Horrified and fascinated in nearly equal measure.

I'm not crazy about the way it's shot (and I usually don't notice that kind of shit) but Dana Gould's standup special is pretty awesome.

Be prepared to be bored and then ultimately aggravated. I did not like this show and the condescending/clueless stuff the show runner said after the season finale.

Oof. I don't remember the last time I was angry at a show as if it was a real person. Sure, shows can make me angry, but I had actual fantasies about killing The Killing. I'm talking straight up murder.

Starting to see what you mean. Has there ever been a more unlikable detective duo? Wash your hair, both of you!
-
Beyond Survival
Survivorman hangs out with various native tribes/peoples across the globe. Really cool show

Examined Life is pretty great.
It's awesome. I also recommend Zizek, by the same filmmaker, if everyone here hasn't already seen it.
-
These are my 5-star-ers available on instant watch that aren't obvious or classics:
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
MST3K: The Final Sacrifice
Swimming Pool
Harvey
Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
Three…Extremes
World's Greatest Dad
Harold and Maude
The Human Centipede
Hellraiser
(If you're like me and haven't seen Hellraiser until last night... It's flabbergastingly good, compared to pretty much any other horror movie ever.)
-
I LOVED World's Greatest Dad. What a pleasant surprise. The poster made it look like the worst thing ever.
-
Luther is so dark that I had to take a break.
Home Movies is great after they went away from squigglevision. Season 2-3-4 are charming and fun.
-
With Home Movies, frustrated, condescending Jason was a much better character than the gross, creepy Jason of season one.
-
"All In This Tea" is a nice little documentary about an American trying to buy tea from small farms in China and encourage sustainable tea growing.
MIKE SHOW BONUS: There's a brief cameo by WERNER HERZOG.
-
Richard Ayoade's SUBMARINE is up. As is the hilarious Stevie Little vehicle THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM.
-

Robin Williams can be quite an enjoyable actor to watch when there's some kind of authority figure and/or director telling him to take it down a notch. The notion of Bobcat Goldthwait being the voice of moderation in this scenario is kinda hilarious ... but these are interesting times that we live in.

Last Train Home
Glad to see this is back on Instant. Fantastic documentary.
-
I recently watched a good doc called The Cruise. It's about Timothy "Speed" Levitch and his job as a NYC tour guide.
-
Richard Ayoade's SUBMARINE is up.
Paddy Considine is so ridiculously funny. Everytime I think of his hair and outfit it kills me.

-
Anyone know when Netflix will be putting up season 4 of Breaking Bad?
Probably will be available on Netflix about the time that season 5 starts airing which is ... sometime later this year?? I just looked it up on Google, and there doesn't seem to be any definitive information about season 5 yet.
-
There's no definitive date, but the season premiere's supposed to be sometime in July.
-
A lot of good titles added to the streaming library over the past few days:
http://instantwatcher.com/titles/new (http://instantwatcher.com/titles/new)
-
Michael Mann's "Thief". The premise of the "one last score before I get out" may be tired but the acting is top notch (even Jim Belushi is inoffensive), especially Tuesday Weld. A lot of late 70s/early 80s character actors. Even has Willie Nelson! You can feel the 70s transitioning to the 80s in this one.
-
Looks like Netflix put up the complete run of Quincy M.E.. So there's that.
Also, I noticed that Film Socialisme is available to stream. I'm not a Godard fan, but I want to watch it, just to see if it's as bad as I think it is. But first, I need to brush up on Navajo English.

Thief is one of the best movies of all time. You forgot to mention the Tangerine Dream score! So heavy. Michael Mann comes out blazing.

That Instant Watcher site is pretty neat-- if you like Asian horror, it looks like they just added Shutter and A Tale of Two Sisters, both of which are pretty entertaining.

I'm a big fan of Instant Watcher. I like being able to see a list of newly added titles as well as sort stuff by genre/Rotten Tomatoes rating. I also like that they have the date that titles are scheduled to end streaming. Sometimes there are titles added that are streaming for only a week. It helps me know if I should watch something ASAP or if I have a few months to get around to it.
-
Shut up Little Man! (though according to a friend who's in it, it's not super accurate and they tried to create villains where there weren't any)
Fractured Fairy Tales
Monk
Everything Futurama
-
I just saw Etienne! before it expired, and thought it was quite good for a low budget indie. I was a bit apprehensive at first when everyone looked like miscreant hipsters, but it had real charm and heart - something missing in so many movies these days. I can't believe it has only two reviews in IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1087443/); one rave and one decidedly thumbs down.
Really worth a watch if it comes back into circulation.
Anyone else seen it?
-
Early low-key Demme.
Citizen's Band
1977 PG 95 minutes
Director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) weaves the disarmingly quirky tales of Chrome Angel (Charles Napier), Spider (Paul Le Mat) and Blood (Bruce McGill), among other characters, who all gab on a CB (Citizens' Band) radio in a rural Nebraska town. Spider has it out for a priest (Ed Begley Jr.) while big-hearted Chrome Angel has to contend with two wives (Ann Wedgeworth and Marcia Rodd) and McGill has caught Spider's girl's eye.
Cast: Paul Le Mat, Candy Clark, Bruce McGill, Roberts Blossom, Charles Napier, Ann Wedgeworth, Marcia Rodd, Ed Begley Jr., Harry Northup

Netflix just added a bunch of the Classic Albums docs to their instant service. I'm a sucker for these things.

Come to think of it, this recommendation might only apply to Spike :P
Anyway the actor who plays Leslie is compelling to watch

I thought that was a fun movie and then the third act shift really ruined it.

I LOVED World's Greatest Dad. What a pleasant surprise.
Agreed! I watched it, and then brought my friends around to watch it again.
I believe that "The Long Goodbye" was recently added. Excellent Robert Altman low-key noir flick starring Elliott Gould, based on a Raymond Chandler novel. Awesome.

If you enjoy "so bad it's good", Birdemic: Shock & Terror is on streaming. Not your typical S.B.I.G. movie. It is the most inept film ever. It makes Manoe: Hands of Fate and Troll 2 look like Ridley Scott epic. Everything from the audio to the editing to the acting to th dialogue is just insane. Watch it with friends and many laughs and "What the fu*ks" will be exchanged.
It's about the power of love and the importance of caring for the environment. And incredibly fake-looking killer eagles.

Sounds like it would pair well with Thankskilling [quite possibly the only killer talking turkey movie in existence]. I live tweeted my viewing of it a couple of years ago. It has to be seen to be believed. Yes, it's streaming.

Two Australian movies that share a similar theme (both are about women looking for suitable men)-
- Muriel's Wedding - probably well known, but just throwing it out there for any FOTs who haven't seen it yet. And I love the ABBA soundtrack.
- Love Serenade - only 4 characters, all of them really odd. Super deadpan humor, cheesy Barry White soundtrack. Lots of quotable lines. Just a really funny and memorable movie.
-
Rotten Tomatoes not necessarily the best guide, but this seems worth checking out:

Did anyone watch Shut Up Little Man! ? Would love to hear your thougts on it.
I keep forgetting to watch Birdemic.
Haven't been watching much on Instant lately, but did just queue up a few on there that I hope to get to:
Mysteries of Lisbon
Into the Abyss (recommended above!)
The Time that Remains
GasLand
God Bless America
The Turin Horse
Melancholia
Knuckle
These Amazing Shadows
Small Town Murder Songs
All looked interesting to me, a few of these I'm way behind on!
-
I was really happy to see "Hot Rod" on instantplay. If you like watching people fall down as much as I do then you will love this movie. I laughed a lot. I especially enjoy watching people fall of bikes, I don't know why.
Danny McBride, Andy Sandberg, the bad guy from Deadwood. Perfect movie.
Also "The Sitter" was hilarious, Jonah Hill in an "everything goes wrong" movie with Sam Rockwell chewing up the scenes. I want to see this one again, another perfect movie.
-
Whoa, didn't realize either of those were on instant....thanks!

I need some good scary movies to watch.

I had breakfast at Shopsin's (original location) a couple times. I saw the late great Chris Whitley there one time. He seemed like a regular.
I watched a Paul Rudd movie--Diggers--this weekend on the netflix. Quiet, underrated movie.

It's dumb, but I laughed a LOT watching "Roller Town" the other night
also the Crips and Bloods documentary from Stacy Peralta was pretty great.

"The Story of Film: An Odyssey"

From description: "Guided by film historian Mark Cousins, this bold 15-part love letter to the movies begins with the invention of motion pictures at the end of the 19th century and concludes with the multi-billion dollar globalized digital industry of the 21st."
Very comprehensive series that focuses on cinema innovation- here and around the world. I dig Mark Cousins' Northern Irish accent though it may take getting used to for some. Learned a lot about Indian films from this show.

I found out that the "Primer" is on Instant, which is a good watch if you like low-key sci-fi. And it looks amazing to have been made for $7,000.
A second "The Story of Film." I feel like it's helping fill in a few of the gaps for me with important early & foreign cinema.

Off-topic, but Shane Carruth, the director of Primer, is making a new movie called Upstream Color: http://shanecarruth.com/film/upstreamcolor. (http://shanecarruth.com/film/upstreamcolor.) The trailer is pretty cool, if somewhat incomprehensible.

We Have a Pope
(Habemus Papam)
The pope has died, and the congress of cardinals has chosen his successor. But what happens if the newly elected pontiff doesn't want the job? This comedy follows the Vatican's travails as it strives to make one cardinal accept his destiny.

I was watching 'Peep Show' and was in the middle of the last season when Netflix pulled it. Honestly it felt like the show ratcheted up the cringe factor as it progressed to the point where I was slowing down in watching it, but now I'm annoyed I didn't complete it.

I just finished a full rewatch two weeks ago. This is my favorite show of all time. The later seasons are better the second time through because you know (or at least generally recollect) what horrors are coming.

Peep Show is one of my favorites too. The region 2 DVDs can be found pretty reasonably on amazon marketplace. There's a funny moment in the commentary where a writer jokes about going to some young comedians' show and stealing all their material, and then David Mitchell is like "You know, that is an idea..." which is hilarious because it's so out of character for him.
If you're a fan of Monty Python, there's a documentary about the making of a new Graham Chapman animated movie using his recorded autobiography.

I had very low expectations for it as it is a SyFy Channel joint based on a series of novels (which I have never read), but I started watching the "The Dresden Files" TV series last night and it's entertaining so far. I found the writing and acting very good for a basic cable monster of the week show.

'Queen of Versailles' turned out to be pretty great: you'll start off thinking it's just another frustrating study of obscene wealth/tastelessness, but as they start feeling the squeeze you get to see how ill-equipped they are to deal with anything outside their bubble.
-
Has anyone here seen House of Cards? I watched the entire first season over the course of two days. Unfortunately, I came away slightly underwhelmed. The acting is solid, and the writing, while a bit spotty, is also pretty well done. The plotting of the show, however, strains the limits of credulity. That's where it loses me. One can only suspend their disbelief so much.

What exactly was controversial about COMPLIANCE? Was it how funny it was considering the content? Or how bad the acting was? Or how terrible the ENTIRE movie was except for the final 30 seconds (which were super great)?
Dude gives prank callers a bad name, I'll tell you what.

I think I've mentioned this before (a search turned up nothing), but there's a great Aussie crime show called Underbelly that was put up on Netflix a few months ago. It's all based on true stories (each series is set in a different decade/city), and the second season might be one of my favorite season of anything ever. It's a little trashier than The Wire, a lot smarter than most American crime procedurals, and it is very graphic for broadcast TV (lots of cursing/gore/nudity), so there's that!
I'm also elated that Snuff Box is back on Netflix streaming, which might be the most insane British TV I've ever watched. Rich Fulcher and Matt Berry are so genius in that show...
edit: oh, and Safety Not Guaranteed and Bunk were both added this week!
I started an episode of House of Cards this week but turned it off because I was BORED.
-
I thought Safety Not Guaranteed was okay. The ending was ridiculous.
The Imposter is really, really good. I love the last line (or one of the last lines) "The Imposter" says in the movie:
***SPOILER***
"I don't care about anyone but myself. Fuck everyone else."

I'm at 42 Up in the Up series. It veers between interesting and dull, which is frustrating. There's less of the 'don't you feel like a big failure' tone to it than there was in 35 Up (so far. It's 2+ hours long and I watch in 1/2 hour chunks). Also, a frustrating part of watching them back-to-back is seeing the same footage again and again (e.g. Tony Walker talking about the 4Fs). If it had been 7years since you watched the previous one, it would make sense. Anyhow, being roughly 42 this one is of particular interest to me.

Holy God is The Comedy horrifying. Tim Heidecker plays a rich, nihilistic hipster who spends his time playing cruel pranks on working-class people, with and without his equally awful friends. The "humor" is in the vein of Tim and Eric's usual stuff, but all of it comes off as disturbing rather than funny, as the jokes are generally at the expense of working-class people who just want to go about their day and be left alone. A very well-done critique of "trust funders" and the almost sociopathic apathy that being wealthy and aimless can bring about.

I took something slightly more from it, based on the very final scene, which made me cry (although I have my own stuff going on these days). Also the dude with the mustache is Jeff Jensen, partner of former Best Show collaborator Andrew Earles. This movie actually reminded me in a weird way of a Bukowski poem, in which you are pummeled with ugliness then the last line punches you right in the gut with a hard dose of humanity.
-
I also thought there was a bit of optimism and humanity in that final scene, but that just made the rest of the movie more depressing. I thought the film was kind of like an American Psycho for the 2010s (but less funny).
I'm surprised at how thoroughly mainstream critics hated this movie. It's unpleasant, certainly, but most critics didn't seem able to discern a separation between the movie's POV and the protagonist's POV. Could it just be that they were disoriented by the title of the movie? I do think that the title was rather self-sabotaging (though that keeps right in the spirit of the film, I guess.) It makes it near impossible to google, and misleads expectations.
Does anyone have any good theories about the title? I heard someone (maybe Julie Klausner or Marc Maron) ask Heidecker about the title, but I don't recall him offering a satisfying explanation.

The people he's parodying tend to think that everything's a comedy? Or that they're acting in the big farce that is life so who cares whether or not they watch someone have a seizure, etc.?

I think I spotted Richard Swift and that one guy looked like Wurster.

Shotgun Stories is good (Michael Shannon's in it; just watch it). Fat Kid Rules the World is terrible and doesn't make much sense; don't be allured by the title.

Don't know if this is it, but I encountered this quote which perhaps has something to do with it:
Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor. - Aleichem, Sholom

I was happy to see that the documentary "Beauty is Embarrassing" is on Instant now. It's about Wayne White, an artist who grew up in the Sand Mountain region (near Chattanooga, not far from here) who designed the puppets for "Pee Wee's Playhouse" among other things that are probably floating around in the your subconscious. It's fun and he's definitely earned his beard.
Plus, there are some scenes shot in this book/art store in Chattanooga I browsed in once, but that's probably only a selling point for me.

Looks like I've got some Barney The Dinosaur "power-watching" to do.
-
I just watched Gnarr, very enjoyable. I tend to watch a lot of documentaries on the streaming site. I loved The new Ross McElwee as well, if you like personal documentaries he is one of the best. Start with Sherman's March. The next thing I plan to watch is general orders no. 9, which was recommended on the PFR blog.
I'm also slowly working my way through the Wallander episodes, which have all been amazing. If you like thriller mysteries with a bit of darkness to them this is the one.
-
We Don't Care About Music Anyway- "documentary" about Japanese noise/experimental music scene. Worth watching but far from what I wanted to see. It only deals with a handful of artists, most of the "live performance" is totally staged and set in "interesting" locations, lots of montage scenes where it mixes random footage with music and you don't really know if you are hearing the artists actual work or what the director put together. It's not informative at all. No history or even names at the bottom of the screen to let you know who you are watching. That aside, it has a few great moments. The duo that plays on the beach is pretty good.
The Dictator- Just watched this last night. New to Netflix. Makes Bruno look classy. It had some really funny moments but they were outweighed by vulgarity and racism.
-
John Dies at the End- loved this movie. It's like someone did a study on my interests and made a movie just for me. Surreal horror comedy. Weird wild fun.

Here are some more Room 237, Somebody Up There Likes Me, Simon Killer, Something In The Air, and Radio Unnameable about one of the radio personalities from the 60's and his call in show.

Apparently that Salinger doc is already on Netflix streaming too.

I saw Room 237, and although I enjoyed it, I just couldn't get behind some of the hidden messages from Kubrick that they went on about.

I watched Parts I and II of the Ken Burns Prohibition thing. It was a pretty entertaining slideshow about Prohibition and gave a bit more of a sympathetic background to pro-Prohibition forces, including the connections between Prohibition and Women's Suffrage movements.
-
Ken Burns's series on the Dust Bowl is like watching a documentary of a living nightmare. Jesus Christ did those people have it rough. And to think that before the Dust Bowl-era began, they had several plentiful years, giving them the impression that good times were ahead.
-

I watched this. Salinger's obsession with and mental abuse of young girls gave me the creeps. If you want a good creep double feature (in celebration of the Halloween season) watch Evocateur and Salinger.

Weird...watching this right now.
We're making it a blockbuster weekend. Earlier, we watched Europa Report. Not scary, and not sure if it's on Netflix yet, but I enjoyed the lighting and its delivery.

This is why I laugh at all this tough guy nonsense among many of today's Republican white dudes. We are all as soft as pillows. We can hope that we have the mettle to survive something like that, but it's tough to know for sure as you wash your gleaming white super-cab pickup with no scratches in the bed.

This movie's great.
I'm in the middle of watching Computer Chess (2013). It's a weird little faux-documentary (dumb edit: it's a "mumblecore" movie rather than a faux-documentary) set in an early 1980s convention (which is chock full of the requisite weirdos and geeks) for computer chess programs. Pretty good so far.

The Long Goodbye is really, really good. The best adaptation of a Chandler novel I've seen (even though many liberties are taken with the source material), and Marty Augustine is perhaps one of the greatest noir villains ever.

Yup. This is one of the all-time greats. Marlowe's resigned motto "It's OK with me" has become something of a mantra for me (which is probably a bad sign.)

Love that one. I'm not actually that huge of an Altman fan, in that he made only two movies I consider truly great: That and McCabe and Mrs. Miller.
(Two great movies is nothing to sneeze at, of course; I just don't rate him as highly as many do.)

You don't like Nashville or 3 Women?
-
I haven't actually seen 3 Women since it was released. Thieves Like Us came close. California Split might too, but I've never seen it under conditions where I could make out a line of dialogue. But no, for me Nashville misses by a mile.

California Split is another good one, I need to see Secret Honor ive heard its pretty good.
-
The craziest thing about Nashville to me is that he tried to sell Shelly DuVall as a sex symbol. Maybe that's because I saw Popeye, though.
-
No, you're right. She's always been crazy looking.

No, you're right. She's always been crazy looking.
And, let me hasten to add, there's nothing wrong with that. Crazy can be good. I was just surprised to see her in what would become the Heather Graham role.

I barely even remember her in the film.

Has anybody checked out Gimmie the Loot yet, its pretty great.
-
Caligula is now up. I've heard that the version they have up has some of the naughty bits cut out (sorry, lustful FOTs). Other dirty, dirty movies on NI include The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. It's a strange one -- if you want to see Michael Gambon act like a depraved maniac for two hours, check it out. It's good, but as far as Greenaway films go (or rather, as far as the two that I've seen go), I much prefer The Draughtsman's Contract (which can be found in full on YouTube).
-
Frances Ha is up on there now too.
-
Only God Forgives is on there now, i kind of liked it better than Drive.
-
Really? I found Only God Forgives more or less unwatchable. I was expecting a lot from it too, since I liked Drive.
I watched Grave Encounters. Basically Paranormal Activity with a more interesting premise and better characters. When the "scares" start happening it gets really lame though. Probably not worth watching.
-

Crazier than Lily Tomlin as a gospel singer?

-

HA!!
She was kind of oddly cute back in the early 70's maybe around the time of Brewster McCloud.
-
Frances Ha is up on there now too.
Watched this. I liked the depressing ending, but I found the characters insufferable. It reminded me of Girls. A lot of quirkiness and people acting as if they lived in some sort of higher realm of existence because they're semi-educated and can look at things in a detached, ironic way. I found this to be amusing rather than annoying in Kicking and Screaming, but maybe that was because Chris Eigeman was in it and the characters were smarter and were quirky in a dorky rather than a "cool" way. I'd love for a GG Allin type to enter the lives of Frances Ha/Girls people and snort lines of coke on their dinner tables and demand money and cigarettes from them, and just shatter their dumb, self-important worlds. There needs to be some sort of violent upheaval. These people are obnoxiously complacent.
-
And yeah, Becket, Charade, and The Lady Vanishes are good.

What was depressing about the end of Frances Ha? I loved the end and thought she came to a place of satisfaction with her life.
As for your comments about the "insufferable" characters...I'd much rather hang out with the people in Frances Ha than GG Allin. Except for maybe Adam Driver's character...
-
I'll have to rewatch the ending. I wasn't sober when I watched the movie or wrote that post.
I wouldn't want to hang out with a GG Allin-type either (I did once and it wasn't pleasant -- having a man piss in his own mouth in your driveway can be unnerving). I was just fantasizing about thrusting him upon those characters like a plague. But now sober, that seems mean. I apologize, fictional people.
-
I liked Frances Ha a lot, but I think Kormodd is quite right that the presence of Kevin Allin would enliven the film.
-
Inserting Kevin into most movies would make them automatically better. Too bad he died before he could get an acting career going.
Speaking of the horrific, check out THE PIANO TEACHER.

What was depressing about the end of Frances Ha? I loved the end and thought she came to a place of satisfaction with her life.
As for your comments about the "insufferable" characters...I'd much rather hang out with the people in Frances Ha than GG Allin. Except for maybe Adam Driver's character...
I watched this last night and I, too, see nothing depressing in the way it ended. At all. More subtlety triumphant really.
-
In my drunken state, I must have imagined an alternate ending in which she fails miserably -- or maybe it was the fact that it was subtly triumphant that was depressing. I can't say for sure, since I have no recollection of the ending. Sorry for misleading you guys.

That's OK. People are always telling me the EASY RIDER has a depressing ending but I just don't see it.

Watch all eight series of Peep Show if you haven't.

Watch all eight series of Peep Show if you haven't.
Just started season 3. Completely stupid question- is "Jez" a common nickname in Englad for Jeremy or is it just that particular character's nickname?

I think the answer is the same for the less-referenced "is Mez a common nickname in England for Mark?"
-
In England they like to add a 'z' to the first syllable of your name. So my friend from Wales (almost England) calls his wife Sharon 'Shaz'.
-
just finishing up watching Peep Show with the gf. She hadn't seen it before, I've been watching it since season 1. So amazing. SuperHans is hilarious.

Funniest TV show ever.
-
Big Star documentary is up! Has this been mentioned already?
-
I saw it. It was kind of a mess, but entertaining. I don't think I would have liked it if I hadn't already liked the band.
Good movies that I recently watched on Netflix:
Love Story
American Psycho
Raging Bull
Targets
Hard Eight
The Paper Chase
Melancholia
Carlos
Becket
-
That has to be the first time I've ever heard Love Story called a good movie.
-
Yeah, Carlos is awesome. I watched Ninja 2 last night, and I recommend it to anyone who likes watching people get kicked to death.

I don't get the hate that it's received. Sure, it's sappy and Ali McGraw's character is irritating, but Ryan O'Neal and Ray Milland make it worth watching. And Nixon liked it! "President Richard Nixon however, reportedly enjoyed the film, regretting only that it contained so much cursing."

Olivier Assayas' latest film, Something in the Air, is also on instant. Highly recommended.

Other stuff:
- Season 2 of House of Cards premieres on Valentine's Day. I didn't like the show at first, but it grew on me. It's not as good as the original, but it's close.
- Michael Cera's turn as a creep, Crystal Fairy, is up. I think Magic Magic (which is directed by the same guy and in which Michael Cera plays en even bigger creep) is better, but it's not on Netflix.
- Watch The Vicious Kind if you haven't.
-
See if "Rubber" is still available.
-
The documentary The Act of Killing is pretty weird. Watch as former Indonesian war criminals (who are still protected by the Indonesian government) gleefully reenact (for some weird movie) various executions and atrocities they'd committed. Only one of them feels any guilt for what he did, and some of them look at their murderous past with nostalgia and amusement. Their appearance on a local talk show, in which the crowd gives them a standing ovation, is beyond crazy.
-
In the weird venn diagram that is Action Movies and Luis Guzmán showpieces, you can do no better than The Last Stand. Schwarzenegger shows his age in this, but he also shows that he's still got it. Guzmán, however, is the reason to watch it. Good if you're into violent gun battles and high-octane car chases. Excellent if you're into plot-holes and Forest Whitaker over acting.
-
Any Halloween recommendations? I watched You're Next and House of the Devil this weekend and both were fun.
-
Not really a "recommendation" unless you're really bored, like already-watched-all-of-those-Inside (LEGO, Chipotle, Dreamworks) mini-documentaries bored, but I had this Doug Benson thing on and noticed a familiar shirt in the crowd.

I recommend hate-watching Somm. If it's still there. Oh how I would love to hear Tom rip on this movie.

Watched The Trip to Italy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2967006/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2967006/)
Not as good as the original The Trip (which I guess is a condensed version of the BBC mini-series), but it's good. And I love Coogan.

Does anyone think Gabe Kaplan is up there with Billy Crystal as far as unfunny, annoying comedians go? Anyway, since Basketball is in the air in the bay area thanks to the Warriors, I decided to watch Fast Break.
Imagine "The Fish that Saved Pittsburg", but replace the annoying kid with Kaplan and the Zodiac theme with homophobia
