That's there is the work of one Charlie White, for those that are interested. I believe it is from the "joshua" series.

Livonia! Was Warren Defever there? Or Warn? Or however he spells his name? I love His Name Is Alive. I've been OBSESSED with this CD (http://www.timestereo.com/specials.php?nice_day=12) I picked up at WFMU's record fair for $5.00. "Cinnamon Sound System" is this super-dubby song -- I love it. I will post an mp3 later in the "music I'm listening to" thread, as I can't stop listening to this song.
I think that might be a piece she's wearing for her new video. They're filming somewhere in California. I HOPE it's a piece, because that hair looks like it might be housing small woodland creatures. I mean, I know she walks around with her crazy beehive hairdo. We saw her clean up a Jamba Juice she spilled in a Duane Reade, and she was sporting a significantly smaller bump of hair on her head as well as a purple toothbrush sticking out of her pocket for some reason.

In fairness, I really want to buy the Estuche piece by Los Carpinteros (http://www.artnet.com/Artists/ArtistHomePage.aspx?artist_id=713154&page_tab=Artworks_for_sale). It's called a jewelry box, but it's actually person size, so you better own a shitload of jewelry if you want the thing to live up to its name. I didn't ask the dealer the price, because I knew I couldn't afford it. Also, I had already spent too much at the Bridge Art Fair and blown some cash on a really cool Shintaro Miyake beaver print, which has sense doubled in price. So yay me.
Also at Art Basel last year, by Los Carpinteros: a pool table. Yep, it was a billiards table made of tile and filled with water.

A while ago I used to work at Dallas BBQ at 2nd Ave. and St. Mark's Place, and one of the few highlights of the job were when Goths would come in and eat ribs. There were occasionally some other BBQ-incongruous types who came in - Mennonites, Tibetan Monks - but the Goths were the best by far.

Bra burning might have been a myth, but I was once at at Grateful Dead concert in Buffalo and some idiot in the car next to ours set fire to a well-worn pair of Marlboro Menthol boxer shorts in some sort of stupid ritual. So put that in your bong and smoke it.
I actually hadn't noticed Tyra Banks in that photo. But I'm sure she doesn't have a fact-checking staff that are at all concerned about 60s backlash propaganda (as it turns out, there was lots of it - evidently no one spit on Vietnam vets either).

The larger green sheet of paper on the bottom right seems to have the word "PIE" on it. Is pie part of the show? If so, what flavour? or is the pie for after the show? Is it a reminder for someone to bring pie to the after rehearsal party? Pie is good. People don't eat enough pie these days. All restaurants serve is stuff like hazelnut torte and opera cake. Whatever happened to pie?

I am trying to understand the problem with this sticker.
I've been holding off messing up the fun picture thread with my pedantry, but part of the problem with expensive oil isn't just the fattened Western (American or otherwise) consumer with his/her big stupid car, though I hate them as much as anyone. The other problem is that even those of us who are really conscious of our carbon footprints rely really heavily on fossil fuel for home heat, our food supply, and other necessities. It takes something like 8-12 calories of oil to make and deliver every calorie of food we eat. The biofuels thing has just made things worse, creating competition for food supplies and arable land. I love you, but get off that bus, Willie Nelson!

I am trying to understand the problem with this sticker.
The problem is it's the kind of dumb, opportunistic campaign-season sticker that sums up something horrible (Bush) by pointing out something a lot of people are complaining about (gas prices). It diminishes the bigger issues, I think. There's a lot more at stake in the world than gas prices. How many people who complain about gas prices buy a small car, a hybrid, or a bicycle in the USA? More than ever perhaps, but still, very few. I went to an auto show last weekend which had all of the new models of cars for the year, and the majority of them are still SUVs and poor-mileage cars, with a few exceptions such as the Prius, a few hybrid SUV's which are still gas guzzlers. Nothing really groundbreaking, however. And let's ask our European friends their opinion about our "high" gas prices in the USA... ;)

Pair dress in 'dead dog' jumpers
A Newcastle couple have found a unique way of keeping their beloved dead pets close to their hearts - by having the dog hair made into woolly jumpers.
Beth and Brian Willis lost their white Samoyed, called Kara, 12 years ago and Swedish Lapphund, Penny, in 2002.
After seeing a picture of Princess Diana wearing a dog fur stole at Crufts, they collected thousands of dog hairs from brushes and carpets.
The pair said the his and hers dog memorials were "warm and waterproof".
Mr Willis, who worked for Pickfords Removals for 27 years, wears his doggy jumper into town every Saturday to do the weekly shop.
The 73-year-old said: "They are extremely warm and pretty much waterproof. I've always got a sweat on by the time I get from the bus to the shops."
Mother-of-three Mrs Willis first used the fur of Kara, to knit her husband's sweater in 1990.
Mrs Willis, 71, said she had the idea after seeing a picture of Princess Diana wearing a dog fur stole at Crufts.
She said: "Kara was a pedigree Samoyed. She was so posh, if she could have talked she'd not have spoken to the likes of us.
"We found out from the breeders we got the pups from that it was possible to use their coat for clothes.
"It is the most amazing stuff. It's like mohair but more lightweight and more soft, and the more you wash it, the more soft and fluffy it gets."
Mrs Willis added: "People are surprised when they find out we're wearing dog wool clothes. Some think it's disgusting and ask how we can do it, but it seems very normal to us."
Even now, Mrs Willis has enough hair left over to make a new jumper, and it has been sent to a friend in Derby to be spun.

Buffo - The World's Strongest Clown
http://www.buffo.com (http://www.buffo.com)
"Buffo is not an ordinary clown. This gentle giant weighs in at over 200 pounds and has biceps that are bigger than most men's thighs. He juggles bowling balls as well as hatchets, meat cleavers, fire and chain saws - as long as they're not turned on! He rips telephone books in half and balances extension ladders and children sitting in chairs on his face. He lies on a bed of nails buried under a stack of cement blocks and walks on broken glass and machetes in his bare feet. He makes animals appear and disappear and escapes from chains, ropes, handcuffs and a strait jacket. He can unicycle, stilt walk, eat fire, ride a buffalo and has a little clown car as well as two big clown trucks, one even has it's own stage. He even has a little dog that does almost as many tricks as he does!"

It's a picture of a half-eaten Brian Eno cake. Why?
A MANSION in London is set to sell for £117million – making it the world’s costliest home.
The palatial residence, on a street dubbed Billionaires’ Row, is believed to have been bought by Britain’s richest man, steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.
If I was a billionaire I would buy that house and then park a rusted-out '73 Javelin in the driveway.

Would this one do? Does it have to run?

When I scrolled to the bottom of Faith's website, I found this odd little nugget:
Not Associated with Lt. Dan Band
Hey Everyone!
I wanted to make something really clear OK...Faith is not, repeat NOT associated with Gary Sinise or the Lt. Dan Band. Those of you who write and ask if we're going on USO tours together are sooo sweet, but no, we're not working together. It would be fantastic, as the band is wonderful - and Gary is the best, but no - - thanks for your love and support of Faith, and I'm sure the LDB would love your continued support too. You're awesome for thinking of us!
Which led me to do some research (http://www.myspace.com/ltdanband/). I can't believe this actually exists on the planet. Gary Sinise plays bass in a cover band that tours USO shows and does "everything from Springsteen to Linkin Park to Aretha?" And it's call the Lt. Dan Band???!!! I had no clue, and am a little shaken by this, for some reason.

Questions:
1. How is this racist, and against whom?
2. Did you steal it from him?
3. Are you still friends?

All I could say was that I couldn't help it if over 75% of America was overweight.

I don't think Chucks are bad for your feet, though. Shoes with too much "support" and padding are bad for your feet, ankles, and legs. The ideal is barefoot, and Chucks come closer to that than most shoes.

Probably depends on the individual - there's no way I'd use these for actual sports. I just walk around town in them.

Like what workout - weightlifting? I've done that. I did some kind of aerobics class in them once and that sucked.
all of my workout- treadmill, elliptical, circuit training, weights, etc. then i turn around and wear them out.

Man, everything except the treadmill. My ankles would be screaming for mercy from that. Maybe it's more that the canvas part of the shoe isn't supportive rather than the sole.

My wife picked up a coloring book for the baby at a dollar store in Bushwick. This thing was so unbelievably weird i had to write a whole post (http://scratchbomb.com/2009/08/the-long-lost-works-of-salvador-dali-coloring-book-edition.html) about it (replete with scans of the offending pages).
My personal favoriite: "Iron with Worried Dog". Keep in mind, this is from a coloring book meant for children.

The Scooby Doo Show was where they upped the humor and got rid of the hippie nonsense of the 60s version. It was a good waystation before they got rid of the jock and the chicks and brought in the execrable Scrappy Doo.

So, let me understand this flow a little.
TE posts something and IAmBaronVonTito responds by saying "go to hell" or something to the effect that TE is a mutant, and that's OK with TE.
Then I post something about "can you make your signature bigger" and IAmBaronVonTito responds by saying "fuck you. I don't like you". Should I be OK with that? I'm confused. It all sounds a little dysfunctional.
Hey, maybe you guys are just like a real family. Huh.
By the way, I'm a big Goner fan - have a lot of their stuff.
Ok, Fletcher. You seriously need to let it go already.Ya, you're probably right. You know, I'm on two other message boards besides this one where people razz each other endlessly everyday, and I find it hilarious. I think it's a matter of tone. It's light and silly. No tells anyone to "fuck off" or "go to hell".

Closeish, fletcher, if you're talking about me several decades ago. Currently, I am possibly old enough to be your grandmother, had I spawned early and borne a child who followed my bad example. And I barely read at all because of aged eyes and a weary brain. It is true that I wear a lot of black, but that's because when one holds on to one's clothes for years, the stains do tend to pile up; black is simply the sensible choice.

That Beatles photo makes me think we need either a thread for "Who was the best-dressed Beatle, relatively speaking?" or a "Which Beatle was the most stoned in each photograph?" thread. Possibly both. I suspect Paul would win one of these rather easily.

I kind of like that Paul is pinching his belly fat in the photo. You don't need a six-pack when you have phenomenal songwriting skills. But what would Trembling Eagle think?

It's a little-known piece of Beatles Trivia that they designed the Members Only jacket. They were to be worn only be members of the Beatles' inner circle, but only George and Mal Evans ever actually used them. Allen Klein later got his hands on Neil Aspinall's never-worn jacket and sold it to Europe Craft Imports, who started to mass produce them.

I'm down with pretty much everything you said w&i. Too many RSS feeds, too many good artists filtering and re-filtering, zooming in and zooming out on every stupid little piece of our childhoods.
Hah, thanks. Your user photo... that happened? No, I would like it to happen.

Impressive! I need to step up my game. Although I really think I like it more when it's obviously fake to the point of being ridiculous. [see above]

I figure Jon Cryer, who is somebody who has been up and waaay down, put his money away this time. I hope the kid's parents did, too, because that kid will never be famous again except as that kid from that show.
That terrible show. Will everyone eventually figure out how wrong they were?

I am asking this earnestly. What's the advantage of keeping weights cold?
duh, they're denser
thus more strength gains
Why do you think the Scandinavian countries dominate Worlds Strongest Man competitions? Year round access to icy-cold weights

Density just means more weight in a smaller volume.

ya exactly
basic physics. I know u guys aint much into lifting but I thought it was common knowledge.
it's just (ever so slightly) smaller.
I keep my weights in a hot oven. Coincidentally, I can bench 1050.

It just shows that whoever designed the cover doesn't know anything about Black Sabbath or who Tony is. Which in itself isn't the end of the world if you're just some interen working at a publishing firm but it shows terrible lack of research and total cluelessness all the way up the chain. The target market for this book would get it in an instant. Insulting.

Black Sabbath fans can read? Fonts don't matter in audio books.

My apologies to friends on Facebook who already saw this, but I thought I should also post here given its relevance to The Best Show. This is a copy of Moby Dick signed by Johnny Cash. The owner of this, a friend of mine in Maplewood, also has a copy of The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde signed by Victoria Principal.

There was a book of Oscar Wilde letters that came out in the last ten years or so, was it that one? That's an awesome book.

Yes!
Somehow you've gotten younger looking, Dave.
I saw them in Raleigh - someone from Superchunk was there, according to their Twitter feed, but not our hero.
I told Todd I heard him a lot on the Best Show and he said he enjoyed doing the show a lot.Todd Barry was the drummer in The Chant for a couple of years.
I was extremely disappointed with my performance, but it was a pretty long line right by the door.
The opener (Brendon Walsh) was funny, but it's amazing to see the difference in flow and audience reaction between a guy finding his way in comedy and a seasoned pro from Florida like Todd Barry.

A lot of people have been really nice to me and called me a hero today. It’s really fun to hear but it’s not true.
Our troops are heroes. Fire fighters and policemen are heroes. Doctors and teachers are heroes. Flight attendants and pilots and waiters and baristas… These are the people that make things work in this crazy world.
What I did today was just point out something we all know: Be nice. It’s Thanksgiving. Be nice.
Be nice everyday, but if you see a man or a woman working on a holiday you better respect that they would like to be with their family too.
So have some compassion and have some appreciation.
Most people do. Most people are great. And then there are a bunch of Diane’s in the world.
And it’s OUR job to tell every Diane to shut up.
It’s OUR duty to put the Diane’s of the world in their place.
We need to REMIND them about the way of things.
We outnumber them.
So, I’m really glad we had fun today, but I really hope you guys join me, look a jerk in the eye, and tell them to eat a piece of your body, because really, that’s what the holidays are all about.
